Reverend Truman S. BENNETT, farmer and oil producer, Eldred, was born near Knoxville, Tioga County, PA, March 28, 1826, the son of Joseph and Lucinda (Bonney) Bennett.
He was reared near Whitesville, NY, until sixteen years of age, and received a common school education.
In 1842 he located in Bradford, PA, and embarked in the lumber business, which he continued for fifteen years. He then followed farming and in 1876, he sold his farm for oil purposes. It was the first farm in Bradford sold on that account.
The same year he located in Eldred and purchased a farm. Oil was found in considerable quantities in 1887, on which were three producing wells, and two more derricks in later operation.
In 1868, Bennett joined with the United Brethren Church, and in 1871 was ordained a minister. He preached in McKean and adjoining counties.
He had been twice married. His first wife was Huldah who died in 1876, daughter of Nathaniel and Dolly (Ingalls) Edson, of Bradford, by whom he had five children:
Walter A. Bennett #142131020
Eveline V. (Mrs. S. Turner) #79996807
Wellman G. Bennett #153680066
Dolly (Mrs. Olmsted) #79863707
Lowell E. Bennett #123792738
His second wife was Mary F. (Allen) Hudson, of Wales, Erie Co, NY. She died in 1903.
His step children were:
Mary L. (Perkins) #79956264
Clark Hudson #63856992
Reverend Bennett was to quite an extent, interested in real estate in the Eldred vicinity, and he erected a large number of dwellings.
Politically he was formerly a Republican, but later a stanch advocate of Prohibition.
