A Family for Isabella HALL
Wh o w a s I s a b e l l a H a l l ?

I confess - the cover photo is not Isabella HALL but rather her youngest daughter,
Eva, taken about 1905. Just maybe Eva resembled her mother.
Prom the Silver Creek Local, August 2,1878, a news report about a coroner's inquest
-inquirin g into a suspicious death that took place in the tiny hamlet of Smith's Mills
in the Town of Hanover, Chautauqua County, New York.
" On that day Miss Bell Hall was examined. She had been and still is
employed as a domestic...she was 21 years old; had been married; didn't
know and didn't care where her husband was; that she had been about
Smith's Mills some three or four m o n t h s . . . having come there from the
oil country."
•>. • she (Mrs. Schoonover) resisted that attempt in no gentle way. The
moment be touched her Belle told her not to be afraid; that she (Belle)
would shed her last drop of blood to help her, and thereupon jumped on
the sheriff's back , . . the girl showed that she was none of the light
weights, but knew how to strike from the shoulder as well as any of
them. After Belle was quieted, the old lady was remov e d .. . "
u. . . sent a reporter . . * was met at the door by a well-built young lady,
rather tall, dressed in white, and whose countenance indicated that she
knew what she was about; in all rather good looking. On learning the
errand she Laughed and said, "So you are the printer! For heaven's sake
come in; we want to see you." The house, which is a weather-beaten
frame on the outside, is pretty well furnished on the inside, Mrs,
Schoonover being a woman of a good deal of property. After offering a
seat to the visitor, the lady, who was Miss Belle herself, called Mrs.
Schoonover, a middle-aged woman whose most prominent feature was
her small, black eyes, that flashed fire when she was talking of her
grievances. . . *
A F A M I L Y F O R I S A B E L L A H A L L
We first became interested in our family history in the early 1980s. The folk* that we
should have questioned were gone. We knew that my paternal grandmother B a m s was Harriet
McGee or Magee, born 25 Sept 1874 in Allegany, Cattaraugus County, NY. We learned that her
parents separated and she was brought up in Boyne Falls, Charlevoix County, Michigan by h^r
father, Emerald A. Mage© and step-mother, Emerald's second wife, Clara Day. We knew Hattie
had a sister Eva Magee who was raised (supposedly adopted) by Mrs. Ja n e Schoonover in the
finest house in Forestville, Chautauqua County, New York. Sometime before the NY Stale
census of 1892, Hattie determined that step-daughter-life in Michigan was unbearable and she
ran ofT to Forestville to visit her sister Eva for what waa to become a long visit. In Forestville
Hattie and Eva met the Barris brothers, Charles and Laverne. On J u n e 21,1893 Charles Barns
and Hattie Magee were married. On November 12 of that same year Emery Laverne Barris
married Eva Magee Schoonover.
That was all the information we possessed. As the story was told, their mother
abandoned the girls and joined the Salvation Army or something worse. There wasn't even a
concensus as to the woman's given name and not a clue as to her surname. Finally, a line-byline
search of the 1875 New York State census for the towns of both Allegany and Olean in
Cattaraugus County turned up the following:
1875 NY State Census. Town of Ofean. Cattaraugus Co. NY:
#15 Elias Cole 44, M, farmer, b VT
Sarah A. 36, F. wife, b Wyoming Co
4 Cole children were listed followed by:
EA, McGee 22, M, servant, farm labor, b Catt
Isabella McGee 18, F, servant, domestic:, b Catt
Hattie McGee 1, F, servant child, b Catt
Hiram Doty 30, M. servant, farm labor, b Allegany
The spellings, McGee and Magee have been used interchangeably and we had a first
name for my great grandmother - Isabella.
Months went by until Lois, at Reed Library in Fredunia, compiling genealogical data
printed in a collection of newspapers which had just been made available to the public, noted
a report of a 1878 coroner's inquest into a suspicious death - possibly murder by poison. Two
of the principals were a Mrs. J ane Schoonover and a young woman in her employ - Isabella
Hall. We remembered that the 1880 U.S. census enumerated my grandmother's sister Eva as
a daughter in a Schoonover family then residing in Forestville
The gist of the inquest was that in the hamlet of Smith Mills in Chautauqua County,
New York on J u n e 9t 1878, a local woman, Jane Record Gunther gave birth to a child who died
shortly thereafter. The attending physician described her labor severe. After suffering for
several days Mrs Gunther was carried to the Schoonover home where her husband was
employed as a farm hand. Saturday, June 29, 1878 the woman was taken much worse and
about six p.m. she died, having had spasms or convulsions during the day. She was buried
Sunday. Chris Gunther was a handsome German immigrant nine years younger than his wife.
It was rumored that Belle HALL had been seen riding out with the husband and that they acted
in an affectionate manner. It came to light that three days after their marriage June 9n 1875
A F A M I L Y F O R I S A B E L L A H A L L 2
the dead woman had drawn a will leaving her sizeable estate to her husband and naming him
sole executor. The local gossips concluded that Chris and Belle wished the woman out of the
picture and thus had motive. Rumors persisted and on the 13th of July Coroner Decker, with
Dr. McWharfof Dunkirk, appeared in the village and proceeded to impanel a jury to investigate
the possibility that the woman had been poisoned.
Between the 13th and 26th of July, 1878 Isabella HALL was one of the three principals
questioned at this coroner's inquest. We have tried unsuccessfully to locate the original jury
transcript. As the newspaper reported the testimony, Isabella Hall gave her age as 21, stated
that her father had died two months after her birth. The report stated she had been married
four times but this may have been a misquote - referring to her mother. Isabella did testify
she had been married; did not know and did not care where her husband was. She bad been
about Smith Mills some three or four months having come there from the oil country. We
learned that Jane Schoonover had come to Smith Mills from McXean County in Pennsylvania
where she had made a considerable fortune in oO production and quite likely other ventures.
It was noted that while the reporter was conducting the interview at the Schoonover home a
small child played about. Jane Schoonover was some 58 years old at the time and Miss Belle
(Isabella) was likely the child's mother. IsabeDa's daughter Eva Magee was two years old that
August, These coincidences convinced us that this Isabella Hall was my great grandmother!
We have found no record of a Hall-Magee divorce, but Isabella Hall married H. Benjam i n
Dikeman of Kansas in the Episcopal parsonage in Dunkirk NY on July 29,1878. Although it
was not mentioned in the newspaper report, the groom it seems was a nephew of Mrs. Jane
Schoonover. There was talk in Smith Mills that the marriage announcement was a fake to
"throw the hounds off the trail." We checked at the church office - the marriage bad been
recorded.
On 20 September 1878, Jane SCHOONOVER, Chris GUNTHER the dead woman's
husband and the recently married Isabella (Hall) DIKEMAN were presented to a grand jury in
Mayville New York, the Chautauqua County seat, charged with murder. Mrs. Schoonover and
Chris Gunther were honorably discharged by the Grand Jury on 27 September 1878, but we
found no report that Isabella HALL DIKEMAN ever appeared. There had been rumors that
"the detectives were after her." Seemingly, she left her daughter Eva Magee in Smith Mills
with Jane Schoonover and vanished along with husband H. Benjamin Dikeman. It was on July
31 the Local reporter made his house visit. Other than t h e murder charge, we have found no
mention of Isabella after the article appeared in the Silver Creek Local on Friday August 2,
1878. Tripe to Little Valley, the county seat of Cattaraugus County and to neighboringMcKean
County in Pennsylvania, referred to as the oil countryf provided little additional information.
A trip to Kansas proved equally unrewarding. We found evidence that in 1881 H. Benjamin
Dikeman was back in Kansas - single.
Isabella Hall Dikeman had vanished but she left clues pointing to her ancestry. We now
knew her father's name was Hall and he died about two months after her birth in
Cattaraugus County about 1857. Likely* Isabella's mother remarried and remarried.
A F A M I L Y F O R I S A B E L L A H A L L 3
We returned to the Cattaraugus County census records. Isabella Hall appeared in 1860
in the town of South Valley; family #98 - Thomas Drayton 28 laborer, Elizabeth Drayton 20
housewife, Isabella Hall 3 daughter, Melissa A. Drayton 1 daughter. We did not recognize the
significance at the time, but the family of Syrill Rounds #96 was a neighbor.
In 1870 Allegany family #189 - Albertus Freeman 38 blacksmith, Elizabeth 33 (born
in Ohio) keeping house, Isabella Hall 13 in school, Melissa A. Drayton U in school, Cornelius
Drayton 9 in school Counting the unnamed Hall, we had identified three husbands of my
great-great-grandmother Elizabeth.
This past winter (1998-1999) on the Internet, 1 came upon a map (sketch) of a HALL
CEMETERY located in the Town of Allegany, Cattaraugus County, New York. Along with the
sketch, drawn by Mrs Irene Hall Anderson was a list of known burials. In many instances Irene
seems to have noted her relationship with that individual - uncle, aunt, grand-father, and so
forth. One of those burials was LIBBIE DRATON, I had documented my great, great,
grandmother Elizabeth Drayton with her daughter Isabella Hall on three U.S. census schedules
and also on New York state census. Could I identify one of the male burials as being my great,
great, grandfather - my HALL ancestor?
I contacted Marlynn Olson, an acquaintance and author of A GUIDE TO BURIAL
SITES. CEMETERIES AND RANDOM STONES IN CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, NEW
YORK. Marlynn listed the Bite and had commented in her book, "According to a 1968 layout
map of the atones and burials, 26 persons are buried here, All that remained in 1992 was one
large stone (Lucy Maria Hall, 1819-1873) and 1 unmarked foot stone. Land owner had either
removed the stones or tipped them over and buried them under loads of dirt. Bodies most
certainly are still there"
Marlynn did not have any amount of Hall information but had been in contact with the
widow of a direct descendant, Jean Kyser. Jean told me that she remembered gravestones being
there but knew of no recording of the inscriptions, She directed me to Dorothy Francis who also
expressed great interest but provided minimal detailed information. Each contact in turn, led
me to other cousins: Robert Spring, Florence Redstone, John H Spring, Merle Kyser, John C.
Anderson Sr., Connne McClure Moyere and, more recently, Richard Allen and Joyce & Izora
Maynard. We visited the Allegany Historical Association Museum and met Margaret Parker
and Shirley Russell, Shirley is a museum docent and also a Philo Hall descendant. I was
directed to Sonny Williams, a knowledgeable resident of Allegany and to Bradley M. Spink, head
of the Mountain View Cemetery Association in Glean, NY. I have talked to Vernon Rounds who
has ancestral connections to Cyril Rounds.
Comparing Irene's burial list with the US census, the logical choice for my progenitor
seemed to be Aaron HALL - Uncle Aron in the Hall cemetery, A son of Philo Hall, Aaron was
18years old on the 1S50 census and most likely the same person age 2© years enumerated next
door to his father on the 1855 census with wife Elisabeth age 16. From the coroner's inquest
testimony, Isabella Hall's father died soon after her birth in 1867. I found no census record of
Philo's son Aaron after 1855. Aaron was not a petitioner in 1878 (Letters of Administration)
suggesting prior death.
A F A M I L Y F O R I S A B E L L A H A L L 4
Information on Aaron Hall's siblings revealed Aaron's sister Mary Hall married Orion
H. Rounds, The 1850 census enumeration of the Rounds family in Allegany listed daughter
Elisabeth age 12 born in Ohio, Inhabitants along t h e Two Mile in 1855 did not travel far to
court perspective spouses. We added the name Elizabeth Rounds to the mix of my possible
direct ancestors suggesting she was Aaron Hall's young wife, Isabella Hall's mother and my
great great grandmother.
The Hall cousins contacted had much of their own Hall genealogy recorded and shared
it generously. They believed Philo's son Aaron lived until 1916 which, if true, would disprove
my assumption that he died in 1857, Perhaps the earlier researchers confused Philo's son Aaron
with another Aaron HALL. I contacted the Olean City Clerk's office (Vital Records) and
obtained a copy of the 1916 death certificate. As I suspected, the Aaron J. Hall in Mountain
View Cemetery born in PA was definitely not Philo's son. Hia parents were Daniel Hall and
Lucinda Colloney - not Philo and Orilia (Kingsley) Hall,
This leaves Aaron, son of Philo (1860 census) Hall, unattached, to assume the role of
fathering my great grandmother Isabella Hall. Following Aaron's death, his widow married
Thomas Drayton and had children Melissa Anne & Cornelius Drayton. Elizabeth {wife) and
Isabella Hall {dau) were enumerated but with different heads of household in 1860 and in 1870.
Census records confirm my great, great, grandmother Elizabeth never ventured far from the
Philo Hall family or the Two Mile Creek. I did not find Elizabeth in the 1865 New York census
but Isabella Hall was enumerated with family of Aaron Hall's brother Alvah,
When 1 became aware of the Hall Cemetery, 1 attempted to identify all of those
individuals whose names appear on Irene Anderson's burial list, Libbie is a common nickname
for Elizabeth, Libbie Draton is certainly Elizabet h (Rounds) D r ay t on , Mrs Picslev (Pixley),
mother of Priscilla Rounds, was Elizabeth's grandmother. Welthy Rounds was a daughter of
Mary Hail & Orton Rounds. Mandv Rounds or Amanda J, was sister of Orton (age 4 in 1860).
(JhariieCappel was Edith Hall's husband (Solomon I860), Elicei CappeJ and 3_childrgi of Aunt
Ede Cappel were theirs. OriUa Hall seems to have a connection to Uncle Martin (buried in
Mountain view). Uncle A r a n . Uncle Hiram. Uncle JgjBfig were all children of Grandfather Filo
Hall & Grama Hall. Aunt Lucy was the first wife of Alvah Hall (eldest son of Philo & Orilia
Hall). I believe David S. Hall born about 1818; having children with names Lucy M., Alva B.,
Aaron J., Luther W. and Marcus was a son of Luther Wildman Hall (brother of Philo Hall).
Lucy Bennett and Marcus Hall, children of David S- and Lucinda Hall, would be Luther's
grandchildren. Gramma Eunice Hall was the second wife of Luther W. Hall. Luther died before
1870 and is probably buried in the HALL CEMETERY although no marker existed when Irene
drew the map. The Gilbert Garr family were neighbors, but Jo an ie Garr was never enumerated.
B. Stebbins child and little brother*, Willie Smith and sister might lead one to believe that the
plot for Home time served as an infant burial site, 1 cannot explain the George Hall mention,
Information that I have possessed for years has fallen into place. Prom Magee genealogy
1 knew my grandmother Harriet "Hattie" Magee, daughter of Emerald A. Magee, was born in
Allegany, Cattaraugus County NY. Emerald Magee's twin sister Emma married Homer Hall.
From Harriet Farnum Magee's 1906 obituary 1 learned that Homer Hall of Olean and his sister
Mrs. Carter attended the funeral of Emma's mother in Arcade, NY. Hall research revealed
Homer's siBter Eunice Hall married Charles Wesley Carter. Royal Magee, a brother of the
Magee twins, married and divorced Melissa Ann Drayton. Royal and Melissa had a son Luman.
A F A M I L Y F O R I S A B E L L A H A L L 5
Vital records non existing, I set out to prove my assumption that Irene Hall Anderson's
Uncle Aran, born 1833, was the father of Isabella Hall and that he died in 1857 and was buried
in the Hall Cemetery on West River Road. He was the first husband of Elizabeth ROUNDS
(Libbie Drayton) reunited in that recently desecrated graveyard. My quest for a death
certificate For one Elizabeth (Libbie) Drayton, or Hall, or Rounds has been unrewarding.
I have studied the U.S. Federal censuses and the New York State censuses for the towns
of Allegany (Burton), South Valley and Olean in Cattaraugus County New York prior to 1840
through 1900, My primary focus was any reference to Isabella HALL, expanded to include
Melissa A, and Cornelius DRAYTON or to their mother Elizabeth. My research pointed to
targeted individuals in each enumeration, often leading rne to the extended Philo HALL family
and to the Cyril ROUNDS family.
The principals of my investigation, first appear in the 1850 United States Census for t h e
town of Burton in Cattaraugus County, NY. Aaron age 18 is Listed as a son in the family of
Philo HaiL In the neighboring family of Samuel I Cyril) Rounds three of the children including
Elizabeth were listed as being bom in Ohio.
By 1855 New York State census enumeration the Town of Burton had become Allegany.
Next door to Philo Hall resides Aaron Hall age 20 and his wife Elizabeth age 16. Cyril Rounds
family includes their daughter Elizabeth age 16. Elizabeth appearing in both listings would
only suggest that the couple were united about the time of the enumeration. Aaron Hall and
wife Elizabeth (age 16) enumerated on the 1855 NY State Census for the Town of Allegany
never appear as family again - Aaron appears nowhere. Aaron Hall is not among the petitioners
- Letters of Administration (1878), heirs of Philo HalL
In 1860 in the Town of South Valley, Cattaraugus County. Thomas Drayton 23 and his
wife Elizabeth 20, born in Ohio, appear with two daughters; Isabella Hall age 3 and Melissa Ann
Drayton age 1. Elizabeth's father Cyril Hounds and his family are neighbors. The young widow
Elizabeth Rounds Hall married Thomas Drayton and their child, Melissa Ann Drayton was born
a year prior to the 1860 census* A son, Cornelius Drayton was born about 1861.
Before the 1865 census enumeration - catastrophe again? Thomas Drayton 31 with his
own children Melissa 6 and Cornelius 4 were found residing with Thomas' father William
Drayton. Isabella Hall age 8 is listed with her uncle Alvah Hall as a daughter. We have not
found our Elizabeth or her parents Cyril and Priscilla Rounds in a line by line search of the
1866 census.
1870 - Elizabeth 33 reappears, she has gathered her children and is enumerated in Allegany
with Albirtus Freeman 38 blacksmith: Albirtus Freeman, Elizabeth, Isabella Hall 13, Melissa
A- Drayton 11 and Cornelius Drayton 9 appear as family, (all three children attending school)
1873 - Emerald Adelbert Magee m a m e d 16 year old Isabella Hall, Their first daughter Harriet
was born 25 Sept 1874, A second daughter Eva was bom 21 Aug 1876. Emerald Magee's
brother Royal Magee married Isabella Hall's half sister Melissa Ann Drayton 15 March 1875.
They had a son, Luman Franklin Magee, born 17 June 1877. On 20 July 1875, Emerald
Magee's twin sister Emaline (Emma) Magee married Isabella Hall's first cousin, Homer Hall,
a son of Cornelius Hall. Homer and Emaliners first eon Herbert was born 21 April 1876,
A F A M I L Y F O R I S A B E L L A H A L L 6
1875 - Isabella McGee 18 (Isabella Hall) was enumerated as a domestic in the home of Elias
Cole residing down the road from Joel Hall. The Cole family lived over the line into the town
of Olean. Isabella's husband E. A. McGee was also employed by Cole. Isabella and Emerald
McGee had daughter Hattie age 1. In Allegany, Isabella's mother Elizabeth Drayton 34, born
OH, widowed and her son Cornelius Drayton 13 were living next door to Joel Hall. Joel Hall
43 single, along with his mother Orilia Hall 74 widowed and his uncle Cyrus Hall 79, widowed
lived together as family.
1878 - Isabella Hall appears in Smith Mills, supposedly a domestic servant residing in the home
of Jane Schoonover, We believe she had her daughter Eva with her. She no longer used her
married name Magee, In July 1878 Isabella Hall married Jane Schoonover's nephew H. Benj.
Dikeman of Kansas and vanished in circumstances described earlier in this narrative*
1880 - US Census, Allegany Catt. Co. NY shows: Joel Hall 47 farmer, Elizabeth 37 wife, Latta
9 (adopted daughter); Anna Magee 20, Luman Magee 3 son. This Anna Magee would be
Melissa Anne Drayton, married to Emerald Magee'e brother Royal W. Magee.
My grandmother Hattie Magee Barris born 25 Sept 1874 grew up in Michigan with her father
Emerald A. Magee but she was not listed in either the Michigan or New York census of 1880.
This last August (2000) I was given a Russell Faulkner family Bible, found among my
grandmother's possessions. It listed Edith Orrilla Faulkner born 25 Sept 1874- Remembering
the 1880 census Allegany Village; Russell Faulkner age 66 shoemaker, his wife Edith age 48 and
daughter Edith age 5 appear. The Faulkners had Hsted no children in the 1875 census. Russell
Faulkner was Edith Hall's second husband. This child was my grandmother Hattie Magee taken
in her great aunt Edith Hall Faulkner and identifed as her daughter. Adalbert Magee, stone
cutter was residing in Charlevoix Michigan - no wife, no children,
1881 - Royal W. Magee was granted a divorce dissolving his marriage to Malissa Annie Drayton,
accusing her of adultery - living in Olean as the wife of John Lawrence between 28 Dec 1880
and 15 Oct 1881 without Royal's consent. "Further adjudged that Royal may remarry as if
Annie were dead, but Annie may not remarry until Royal is actually dead. Further the custody
of Luman Franklin Magee, the child of said marriage is awarded to Royal W. Magee."
28 Oct 1881 Emerald A. Magee married Clara M. Day in Charlevoix, Michigan. When her father
Emerald Magee remarried, Edith left the Faulkners, became Hattie Magee again, and went to
live in Michigan.
1892 New York State census for Forestville NY listed in the home of Jane Grinalds age 65,
a daughter Myrtle 7, a daughter Eva Schoonover 16 and Hattie Magee 18.
My great, great grandmother Elizabeth ROUNDS, HALL, DRAYTON, FREEMAN, HALL was
not found after the 1880 census until Libbie Draton was listed among burials in the HALL
CEMETERY,
1900 US Census, Loup Co Nebraska; Joel Hall age 68 born April 1832 in New York, a farmer
residing 16 yrs in Nebraska. Joel apparently left Allegany about 1884 or 85 with his wife
Addie Valentine and his brother David's family when they migrated west.

Margaret Parker of the Allegany Historical Association Museum sent me the following item
from the Allegany Citizen, Saturday Morning, July 9, 1921:
The 10th annual reunion of the Philo She!ton Hall descendants was held with Mr,
and Mrs, Herbert Spring on the Four Mile on July 4th . . . a bountiful dinner was
served to 85 members of the family and 20 guests after which the president
Mrs, Eunice Carter sounded the gavel and the business meeting was called to order.
Eight births, one death and three marriages were reported. The election of officers
resulted in Mrs. Irene Anderson being president; Hulda Wheeler, treas.; and Ruth
Conrad was re-elected secretary,
T. B. Hall attended the Hall reunion last summer in Nebraska and was prepared to
give us a very interesting report. . .
The out of town relatives and guests were Mrs- Hattie Barris and daughter Del tha
of Forestville, N,Y.; Mrs, E. Murtaugh, Mrs. Frank Smith, son and daughter of
Rochester; Mrs. J. Fitzpatrick of Avon, N. Y. and Andrew Snyder of Coudersport, Pa.
My grandmother Hattie Magee Barris1 attendance at the Philo Shelton Hall family
reunion was certainly a statement that this was her family. Given that Hattie's mother's
surname was HALL, Isabella had to be Philo's grandchild. I can account for all of Philo's sons
after 1860 with the exception of Aaron. Aaron Hall, son of Philo Shelton Hall, was my great,
great grandfather who died about 1857.
I have uncovered no factual evidence to disprove my assumptions that Philo and Orilia
Hall's son Aaron and Elizabeth Rounds, daughter of Cyril and Priscilla Pixley Rounds, were the
parents of my great-grandmother Isabella Hall. I claim my place in the descendant line of
Gilbert Hall - from; HALL - NINE GENERATIONS by Corinne McClure Meyers: Gilbert'
