  [SHAY 15010 Silas.FTW] According to James Stephen Hogg--A Biography, by Robert C. Cotner, "While on maneuvers in Roupe's Valley as colonel of Alabama's Seventeenth Regiment of Militia, Joseph Hogg made the acquaintance of the prosperous planter, Elisha McMath, who also owned a general store at the big spring where the stage stopped on the Tuscaloosa-Huntsville road. During the years of the increasing boom McMath had been busy buying lands and mill sites on the Warrior River. When he saw that his attractive sixteen-year old daughter, Lucanda and the tall, handsome colonel, son of Senator Hogg, were interested in each other, he did nothing to discourage what was considered a very good match. The young couple married at Elisha's home on February 10, 1832." Joseph and Lucanda moved from Tuscaloosa Co., AL to Texas in 1839. Joseph Hogg, a prominent planter and a member of the Texas legislature, became a Brigadier General in Confederate Army and died in a Southern camp at Corinth, MS in 1862.
