He came from Shinglehouse PA....a small rural town. It wasn’t his choice, but when his country called- he went, he served. He was a tank commander, Sargeant First Class in The Korean War-a War often forgotten. He fought in the jungles, in the cold of winter and the heat of summer. He was injured and insisted on going back to his company. Although I’m sure he never admitted it to anyone, I’m just as sure that he was scared out of his mind at times. He gave 2 years of his young life and while he obviously didn’t die in the effort, he was forever changed by the experience. His hearing was damaged, his arm and shoulder were injured, and he suffered from nightmares the rest of his life. I’m sure it would be called PTSD today. My Dad taught me to love and respect my country....to be proud and respectful of those who served to protect our freedom. Every Memorial Day he marched in uniform in the town parade and paid military tribute to those who didn’t return from the wars in which they served ...until he physically couldn’t do it anymore...and I was (and am) so proud of him. Take a few moments today to think about the price these men and women in uniform have paid for you and your family. Offer a prayer of thanks and blessing for those who died in their effort to protect you. Support organizations that support our veterans. We don’t know the exact cause of her death but it seems to be of natural causes. There won’t be a memorial service until springtime next year due to CoVid restrictions at Dads facility and Bob not being able to get here. I’ve notified Uncles Ed and Bob. Please keep my Dad in your thoughts and prayers. He’s doing ok but this is tough on him. OLEAN - Gordon Maxson Olson, of 161 S. 25th St., passed away on Saturday (Jan. 9, 2021) at Olean General Hospital, following a brief illness.

Gordon was born March 31, 1929, in Titusville, Pa., the son of Albert George and Hazel Evelyn Maxson Olson. On July 3, 1954, he married his wife of 66 years, Mary Ellen Wetzel, who predeceased him on Dec. 25, 2020.

Gordon was a disabled combat veteran of the Korean War, where he served from Oct. 16, 1950 to Sept. 24, 1952; a life member of American Legion Post 530, Shinglehouse, Pa. and the Disabled American Veterans.

Gordon was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, and graduated in 1957 from Williamsport (Pa.) Technical Institute, with a degree as a toolmaker.

In May 1967, he graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo, with a bachelor of science in education, majoring in vocational education.

Continuing at this institution, he received a master's degree in education, in May 1978. He took great pride in his students especially those who went on to tool making or machining careers.

Gordon was employed as a tool and die maker at Dresser Industries; Clair Manufacturing; Crest Tool & Machine; and Keystone Tool & Die; as an instructor in the New York State Apprentice Program; and an instructor in industrial machining, for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, where he retired in 1988, after 23 years in education.

Gordon was a member of the Olean First Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling; card games; horseshoes; woodworking; photography; billiards; basketball, especially the St. Bonaventure Bonnies; square dancing, as a member of the Enchanted Mountaineers Square Dance Club; and wintering in Florida after his retirement.

He always enjoyed a good meal and especially loved fried oysters and homemade pies - except chocolate.

Gordon is survived by his children, Penny S. (James) Sorokes of Olean and Robert J. Olson (and a special friend Cindi Sellers) of Portland, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Megan E. (Jason) Sorokes Sneed of Davidson, N.C., Daniel J. (Ariane) Sorokes of Rochester, Kelli M. Sorokes Heiler of Rochester and Cole T. Olson of Anchorage, Alaska; an adopted granddaughter, Dominique J. (John) Olson Lassiter of Suffolk, Va.; a step-grandson, Arick Robert (Felicia) Grim of Halliday, N.D.; six great-grandchildren, Owen Heiler, Bryson and Kinsley Lassiter, and Anastasia, Faustina and Willow Grim.

Along with his loving wife, Gordon was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Harold Olson and Hazen Olson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and time to be announced at the convenience of the family.

Memorials if desired, may be made to the First Baptist Church of Olean, 133 S. Union St., Olean, NY 14760 or the American Legion Post 530 of Shinglehouse, 1364 State Route 44, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean.

This is what my Dad was doing when he was 21-23 years old.
He came from Shinglehouse PA....a small rural town. It wasn’t his choice, but when his country called- he went, he served. He was a tank commander, Sargeant First Class in The Korean War-a War often forgotten. He fought in the jungles, in the cold of winter and the heat of summer. He was injured and insisted on going back to his company. Although I’m sure he never admitted it to anyone, I’m just as sure that he was scared out of his mind at times.
He gave 2 years of his young life and while he obviously didn’t die in the effort, he was forever changed by the experience. His hearing was damaged, his arm and shoulder were injured, and he suffered from nightmares the rest of his life. I’m sure it would be called PTSD today.
My Dad taught me to love and respect my country....to be proud and respectful of those who served to protect our freedom. Every Memorial Day he marched in uniform in the town parade and paid military tribute to those who didn’t return from the wars in which they served ...until he physically couldn’t do it anymore...and I was (and am) so proud of him.
Take a few moments today to think about the price these men and women in uniform have paid for you and your family. Offer a prayer of thanks and blessing for those who died in their effort to protect you. Support organizations that support our veterans. Say a sincere Thank You to one when you see them. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

What a great man to have served his country with honor and respect as he did. He will always hold a special spot in my heart. I will think of him often today when we have our ceremony in Shinglehouse.
