Republicans To Meet On Friday
The Republican Committee will meet Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the courtroom of the Potter County Courthouse.
On the agenda are plans for the upcoming primary election campaigns. Committee men and women will be elected this year and petitions will be distributed at the meeting as well as other election materials. All candidates, office holders and other interested Republicans are urged to attend.
John E. Pekarski, Coudersport fire chief, said Mr. Chapell awoke about seven o'clock Friday morning to the excited barking of his dog. Mr. Chapell, sole occupant of the dwelling, smelled smoke and was able to flee the burning building without injury. A passing motorist spotted the flames and turned in the alarm at the nearby state police barracks. According to Chief Pekarski, probable cause of the blaze was an overheated stovepipe in a downstairs room. Firemen were hampered by a lack of water and were unable to control the flames. The two-story frame structure, built of double-board siding with sawdust' insulation, burned to the ground. Destroyed by flames were a number of antiques, including antique firearms. Loss to building and contents was estimated at $25,000. Mr. Chapell is now staying with a son, Steve Chapell, who lives in Coudersport.
Firemen were again called out at 10 : 15 p.m. Friday when Mrs. Margaret Baker returned from an outing to discover flames erupting from the livingroom of her home, Chief Pekarski said the fire was apparently caused by an electrical short. Although the blaze was confined to the downstairs portion, the second floor area was heavily damaged by smoke and intense heat. Damage to the two-story frame home and contents was estimated at $13,000. A pet dog perished in the blaze. Mrs. Baker is temporarily staying with her daughter, Mrs. Sam Hurst, who lives nearby.

Coudersport Man Dies In Two-Car Collision
A two-car collision in Coudersport Borough Wednesday night took the life of a Coudersport man and seriously injured two Port Allegany people.
Dead is Larry Eugene Lattin, 24, a 1967 graduate of Coudersport Area High School who planned to return to his studies at Penn State in the spring. Death was attributed to a broken neck.
Injured were Robert Eugene Sherwood, 23, and Virginia A. Safford, 19, both of Port Allegany. They were apparently enroute to Cole Memorial Hospital to see Mrs. Safford's mother-in-law, Betty L. Safford, who was seriously ill and who died two days later.
Time of the collision was set at 11:30 p.m. by deputy coroner Tom Fickinger. Several motorists passed the dark resting place of the two vehicles in the eastbound lane of Rt. 6 in front of the Brookside Inn, a mile and a half east of Coudersport.
The glimmer of a reflector caught the eye of a tractor-trailer driver driving toward Coudersport. He then saw the two cars and what he thought were bodies on the road. He paused at Goodenough's Store but saw no phone then continued with the hope he would see the town police in Coudersport. Finally he stopped at a gas station on the other side of town and the owner phone the state police about 11:55, who in turn notified the borough police.
Borough police officer Merle Knickerbocker was at the scene for four hours. He said when he arrived the Port Allegany victims were conscious but incoherent. Ten minutes later he found the body of Mr. Lattin submerged in the pond where he had apparently been thrown by the force of the collision. His shoes were still in his MG convertible.
All three were taken to Cole Memorial Hospital where Mr. Lattin was pronounced dead. Mr. Sherwood and Mrs. Safford were taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He suffered a fractured right arm and ribs and chin lacerations and was moved three days ago from intensive care. He is listed in satisfactory condition. Mrs. Safford's condition is described as good. She suffered a fractured right ankle, fractured pelvis and facial fractures.
Officer Knickerbocker said Mrs. Safford's husband Bernard had called Sherwood from the hospital and asked him to bring his wife there because of his mothers serious condition. It was some time before hospital authorities identified the young woman because her driver's license said Virginia Kaziska. The Saffords had only recently been married, it turned out, and she still hadn't had the license changed.
Police were still unable yesterday to get details from the survivors of what had happened. Neither could remember anything about the accident. The absence of skid marks makes it difficult to determine the sequence of events at the scene.
Theories vary. The vehicles may have been thrown into the air by the collision and landed in the place where they were found, at the east entrance of the driveway into the Brookside. The right side of the Lattin car was struck by the front of the 1970 Dodge driven by Sherwood. The rear of the Dodge extended into the west-bound lane of traffic.
Another theory is that Lattin may have made a sudden turn into the Brookside driveway in the path of the oncoming vehicle and virtually both cars were stopped immediately on impact. Ice on the highway has been virtually ruled out because of the distance to the nearest icy patch.
