Capt. Roger Benson
Died Last December
In Japanese Camp
Mrs. Benson Notified Last Wednesday of Husband's Death Taken Captive When Philippines Fell.
Mrs. Edith Benson received official word Thursday of the death of her husband, Capt. Roger Benson, last December in Japan, where he was interned as a prisoner of war. Details are lacking. Mrs. Harold Furman of Coudersport, Mrs. Benson's sister, was apprised of her brother-in-law's death Friday, less than a week after learning that Captain Benson was in Japan.
Taken captive early In the Pacific war when the Philippines fell to the invading Japanese, Captain Benson's whereabouts was a mystery for months. Then last week, a former fellow-prisoner, Capt. W. E. Stone of Chicago, accompanied by his wife, stopped at the Furman home. He told Mrs. Furman that her brother-in-law was removed to the Japanese mainland for internment and that he escaped a similar fate because of an illness, believed by his captors to be tuberculosis, dreaded by the Japs. Captain Stone, liberated when the Philippines were re-taken, said Captain Benson was in good health at the time of his transfer from the Philippines.
Mrs. Benson, living In Florida, will soon return to Coudersport.
Coming to Potter County in 1933 as an officer attached to the Civilian Conservation Corps., Captain Benson, then a first lieutenant, was stationed at Camp Dyer. His marriage to Miss Edith Hall took place two years later.
Captain Benson's mother, two sisters and three brothers also survive.
