Two years later, Katherine Pflugfelder arrived with her family in America. They were old friends in the old country. Jacob and Katherine were married in Troy, NY in the year of 1850. Jacob was an expert wood finisher by trade and the fine dust of his occupation finally affected his lungs. He was advised to seek a new home “among the pines”, but we do not know how he happened to select Germania to begin his new life. They arrived in Germania on the date of the birthday of the oldest daughter, Louisa, who was seven years old, April 7, 1860. The neighbors in Troy were sure they would return after suffering the hardships of the forests, but it was Grandmother Kortz’s pride and determination that prevented their return to easier living. They built a new house of native pine and it was situated on the high hill about two miles from Germania, PA. At 40 years Jacob was drafted into the 99the Reg. C. “D” PA Infantry, Feb. 21, 1865. He was mustered out July 1, 1865. As a result of Jacob being in the Civil War, and tramping the swamps of Virginia, he developed rheumatism, which caused blindness. He had fought in place of Mr. Bodler and joined the Bucktail Division. After his eyesight failed, he was cautious to feed his cattle by hand instead of using a pitchfork for fear of injuring them. He always carried a gun and an ax when he rounded up the cattle and sheep for protection from the wild animals. Once he did encounter a bear and two cubs, and when the bear attacked he couldn’t scare her with the ax, so he yelled loudly until the animals fled in one direction while he ran in the opposite way, they both traveled very fast this day. Jacob had two nephews living in America that hoped to visit Germania, PA but one was killed in the war to the great sorrow of the family. There were Pflugfelders living in Renova, PA, which are thought to be half-brothers of Katherine. In Troy, there are cousins residing, namely: Charles Mebs and Charles Teschon, who were coppersmiths by trade. They were considered wealthy and visited the Kortz family once a year and kindly brought scarce articles such as grains, flower seeds and yarn. A son Christian Kortz had died in infancy. JACOB KORTZ WAS BORN Aug 17, 1823 in Darmstadt, Hesse, West-Central Germany. Katherine Pflugfelder Kortz was born Jun 4, 1829 in Wurttemberg, Germany, which is east of the Rhine and near the border of France. Wurttemberg is 124 miles south of Hesse, where Jacob was born.
JACOB CORTZ ARRIVED IN AMERICA in order to escape conscription in the German Army. I do not have a date for this arrival, but I do know that there was heightened political unrest in Germany in the 1840s and drafting into the German army hung over the heads of many German men at that time. Two years later, Katherine Pflugfelder arrived with her family in America. According to family history, the Kortzs and Pflugfelders were family friends in the old country.
JACOB AND KATHERINE WERE MARRIED in Troy, NY in the year of 1850. Jacob was an expert wood finisher by trade. Our cousin John Peet was fortunate to acquire a few of Jocob’s creations and has them on display in his home near Coudersport. Jacob unfortunately breathed in too much of the fine dust of his occupation, that his lungs were finally affected. He was advised to seek a new home “among the pines”, but we do not know how he happened to select Germania to begin his new life. They arrived in Germania on the date of the birthday of the oldest daughter, Louisa, who was seven years old on Apr 7, 1860. (As a side note: This was 10 years before Carl Herman Mosch emigrated with his family from Saxony, Germany to Germania.) The neighbors in Troy were sure they would return after suffering the hardships of the forests, but it was Grandmother Kortz’s pride and determination that prevented their return to easier living in the more established town of Troy. They built a new house of native pine and it was situated on the high hill about two miles from Germania, PA.
THE KORTZ CHILDREN
A son Christian Kortz had died in infancy. Born 01 Mar 1851, Died Dec 1851.

Louisa Frederica Kortz was born 07 Apr 1853 in Troy, NY. She married Walter King Sheldon on 28 Nov 1871 in Lockhaven, PA. She died Nov 1940 in Coudersport, PA.
Katherine Dordes Kortz was born 24 Dec 1856 in Troy, NY. She never married. She died 31 Mar 1934 in Coudersport, PA.
Thereasa (Thresia) Charlotte Kortz was born 22 Feb 1859 in Troy, NY. She married Christian F. Straley 18 May 1884 in Germania, PA. She died 19 Feb 1928.
FOUR CHILDREN were born in Germania:
Adolph Kortz was born 17 Oct 1864 in Germania, PA. He married Louise Hauber. He died 17 Feb 1950.
Wilhelmina Hedwig Kortz was born 27 Apr 1866 in Germania, PA. She married Emil Ernest Mosch 21 Sep 1885 in Germania, PA. She died 12 Feb 1940 in Coudersport, PA.
Emily (Amelia) (Emma) Kortz was born 27 Apr 1868 in Germania, PA. She married Charles Welfling 26 Oct 1892 in Coudersport, PA. She died 26 Oct 1916 in Coudersport, PA.

I've viewed this farm with Google Earth and see that this is a relatively level plateau property. It indicates that being earlier settlers in the area afforded the Kortz family first pickings.

In some of the stores told by Otto Mosch, the first winter that the Carl Herman Mosch family experienced in 1870-1871 was exceptionally severe. I'm sure they were not completely prepared, having just built their home in Mosch Hollow. Otto also told stores that wild animals were a challenge as well. I presume they had only temporary shelter for their livestock. ·

METZGER-METZGER CONNECTION IN OUR FAMILY
South German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a butcher, Middle High German metziger, metzjer, German Metzger (probably a loan word from Latin, but of uncertain lineage).
The Metzger family name was found in the USA, the UK, Canada, and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. The most Metzger families were found in the USA in 1880. In 1840 there were 43 Metzger families living in Pennsylvania. This was about 51% of all the recorded Metzger's in the USA.
We have two lines of these Pennsylvania Metzgers in our family. Are their ancestors connected? I don’t know.

Owen Goodman Metzger was the son of William Hayes Metzger and Pamilla Coolidge (English descent) and William was the son of Francis “Frank” Larue Metzger and Margaret Cook, Francis was the son of Daniel Metzger, son of John Metzger and Anna Marie Larue. I think John’s parents were from Germany. There’s been a lot of nonGerman intermarriage

Jacob Kortz arrived in America in order to escape conscription in the German Army. Two years later, Katherine Pflugfelder arrived with her family in America. They were old friends in the old country.
Jacob and Katherine were married in Troy, NY in the year of 1850.
Jacob was an expert wood finisher by trade and the fine dust of his occupation finally affected his lungs. He was advised to seek a new home “among the pines”, but we do not know how he happened to select Germania to begin his new life. They arrived in Germania on the date of the birthday of the oldest daughter, Louisa, who was seven years old, April 7, 1860. The neighbors in Troy were sure they would return after suffering the hardships of the forests, but it was Grandmother Kortz’s pride and determination that prevented their return to easier living.
They built a new house of native pine and it was situated on the high hill about two miles from Germania, PA. At 40 years Jacob was drafted into the 99the Reg. C. “D” PA Infantry, Feb. 21, 1865. He was mustered out July 1, 1865.
As a result of Jacob being in the Civil War, and tramping the swamps of Virginia, he developed rheumatism, which caused blindness. He had fought in place of Mr. Bodler and joined the Bucktail Division. After his eyesight failed, he was cautious to feed his cattle by hand instead of using a pitchfork for fear of injuring them. He always carried a gun and an ax when he rounded up the cattle and sheep for protection from the wild animals. Once he did encounter a bear and two cubs, and when the bear attacked he couldn’t scare her with the ax, so he yelled loudly until the animals fled in one direction while he ran in the opposite way, they both traveled very fast this day.
Jacob had two nephews living in America that hoped to visit Germania, PA but one was killed in the war to the great sorrow of the family. There were Pflugfelders living in Renova, PA, which are thought to be half-brothers of Katherine. In Troy, there are cousins residing, namely: Charles Mebs and Charles Teschon, who were coppersmiths by trade. They were considered wealthy and visited the Kortz family once a year and kindly brought scarce articles such as grains, flower seeds and yarn.
A son Christian Kortz had died in infancy. Born March 1, 1851 Troy, NY. Died Dec. 1851Troy, NY.
Three girls accompanied them to their new home in Germania, PA:
Louisa Fredericka Kortz - Born Apr. 7, 1853 Troy, NY, Died Nov. 1940 Coudersport, PA - Married Walter King Sheldon on Nov. 28, 1871 Lock Haven, PA - Born Apr. 26, 1844, Died Nov. 4, 1890.
Katherine Dordea Kortz - Born Dec., 24, 1856 Troy, NY, Died Mar., 31 1934 Coudersport, PA - Never Married.
Thereasa (Thresia) Charlotte Kortz - Born Feb. 22, 1859 Troy, NY, Died Feb., 19, 1928 - Married Christian F. Straley on May 18, 1884 Germania, PA - Born Feb. 4, 1856, Died Jul. 13, 1936.
Four children were born in Germania:
Adolph Kortz - Born Oct. 17, 1864 Germania, PA, Died Feb 17, 1950 - Married Louise Hauber .
Wilhelmina Hedwig Kortz - Born Apr. 27, 1866 Germania, PA, Died Feb. 12, 1940 Coudersport, PA - Married Emil Mosch on Sep. 21, 1885, PA - Born May 8, 1864 Eppendorf, Germany, Died Oct. 25, 1937 Coudersport, PA
