“Helene formerly of Galeton, PA Age 96, died Thursday, October 9, 2003 in Charles Cole Hospital, Coudersport.
Born March 2, 1907 in Galeton, she was the daughter of Marcus J. and Anna L. Kortz Handwerk.
A 1925 graduate of Galeton High School, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Temple University School of Commerce. Miss Handwerk was employed as an administrative assistant by Galeton Dairy Products, and accountant by the PA Auditor General’s office, a caseworker by the PA Dept. of Public Assistance in Coudersport, and underwriter for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Rochester, NY, and as a caseworker by the NY Dept. of Public Assistance in Elmira, NY. She was a member of the Galeton First Presbyterian Church, where she served as president of the Board of Trustees and participated in the choir and the Friend X Class, the Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, NY, and the Galeton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include
cousins,
- Virgil F. Handwerk of Germania,
- John G. Peet of Coudersport, and
- Arthur F. DuBois of Coudersport.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 13th, in the First Presbyterian Church, Galeton. The Rev. Karl W.O. Runser III, will officiate.
Burial will be in Germania Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Galeton 16922. Arrangements are entrusted to the Collins-Olney Funeral Home, Galeton.”
Helene is the granddaughter of Jacob Kortz and Katherine Pflugfelder and the second child to Anna and Marcus Handwerk.
Her sister, Mildred (1896-1901) died six years before Helene was born.
Her sister, Eloise (1911-1911) died as an infant.
She is buried in the family plot at the Germania Cemetery.
