You are correct. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but it seemed right when I wrote it.

Hi Gerry.
As I read your note, I have two mothers for Jean- Margaret Thompson and Mary Ophelia Dingman, who I have as Thomas Leon Toles' mother. Should 'Her mother' in your second paragraph be 'his mother'?

Jean Louise Toles (1929-2010) was my first cousin once removed. Her family lived next door in two different neighborhoods in Coudersport. PA.
Jean's father was Thomas Leon Toles (1822-1958). Her mother was Mary Ophelia Dingman.
Jean's mother descended from another Toles line, which so far I have not connected to her father's line.
Jean's mother was Margaret A. Thompson (1895-1957). Margaret's mother was Ada Dell Toles (1873-1963), my great grandmother. Ada's father was Luther W. Toles. Luther's father was Horace Toles.

Ha! I lived at 1223 (I think) Deerfield Drive until 2007, when I moved down to Columbia, SC for 5 before coming to Richmond. I am a chemist, moved to State College from Valley Forge in 1980 and worked for RUETGERS Organics aka WeylChem Corp until 2010. [I'm sure you're familiar with Nease Chemical.] Small world! We must have run into each other.
Well, nice to meet you on ancestry!
BTW, are you related to the Dingmans in that photo? Or any, for that matter. If so, then we're related.

John, thanks for the information.
I've lived in State College since May 1977, and I was an undergrad at Penn State in the late 1960s. I came back to work as general manger for The Daily Collegian. My wife Debbie Benedetti and I live at 1205 Deerfield Drive, in the Greenbriar Development, about three miles from downtown State College. I wonder if our paths ever crossed.

Hi Gerry,
I used to live in State College, moved to Richmond VA 5 years ago.
About the 1888 photo of the Wm Dingman family. I'd gotten it from Patty Vella, also a Dingman descendant. Patty has a lot of 'stuff' on Dingmans and I haven't begun to tap into it. I've added the girls' husbands names in the Notes below; I'll update the on-line version... No, I won't update it, I'll exchange it, with a, much improved for detail and accuracy, tree, just as soon as I am convinced that ancestry & MacKiev won't destroy my data and the integrity of my media. That's a whole 'nother story.
So here is what I have on that photo. I think the girls' names are going from left to right. I don't have any firmly identified pics yet of the guys to say otherwise:

and daughter Maybelle is on the right.

Jessie Muriel - Orr James McCollough
I hope this helps, john

I appreciate the photos you have posted, but I have a question about the Dingman Family ca 1888, Coudersport, PA. The caption phrase "The 3 women in the outer row are their daughters" does not clearly identity each of the three daughters and their husbands.
Have I got the following correct?
Middle row (from left): Delta, William, Mary Brock and Delta's husband.
Back row (from left): Ophelia, her husband, Laura's husband, Laura.
Thanks.

Turn your thoughts to 1840, when our other grandfather and grandmother and family (Isaac and Amy Ellsworth Brock), came to Hebron. Can you young people visualize the trip? A yoke of oxen, and six weeks on the road from Grafton, NY to Hebron, Potter Co, PA-- a day's trip, or a little more, with your automobile. Imagine them reaching here and choosing a spot, cutting down trees, and clearing a space large enough, at first, to build a log cabin. Then the real struggle began, to keep the wolf from the door in more than one sense of the word. I've listened to my mother tell how, as a child, she had sat on the door-step and listened to the howling of the wolves close by. The future can never bring anything to us that we should be more proud of than our brave old ancestors, "heroes and heroines."
Mother dear (Mary Angeline Brock Dingman) was only six monhs old when she made that trip. But I fancy she was as happy as any of the weary travelers. Often it was hard to find a place to stop overnight. Grandma said once, they stopped at an inn, but everything was so mysterious and queer, they were afraid to stay after resting the stock. (I think they brought a cow and a calf.) Then they started on the road again. How worn and weary they must have been before they reached Potter Co! ___________________
