Out Of The Attic
You had to be tough to be a football player in the 1940s. Protective equipment was minimal and the ground was hard and rocky. This was the Coudersport HS tam of 1942. Lft to right, the team members included:
Leonard Treat,
Jim Pfuntner,
Lewis Schaub ,
Charles Fickinger (kneeling in front),
Paul Boyd,
Walt Glassmire (captain, holding ball),
Ed Secott,
Bob Dewey and
Sam Huntington;
back- Arthur DuBois,
Coach Baker,
Dunkleberger,
Hoxie Corey,
Paul Hawkins,
Carl Roberts and
Coach Springman (partly obscured man is not identified). We'll have another photo of this team in our 1993 Fall Sports Preview, which will be published in the Sept. 1 edition of the Leader-Enterprise. As usual, the focus will be on HS, college and professional football, as well as the local scholastic volleyball, soccer, cross country and golf teams that are preparing for the 1993 season.

Tom Roberts Jeffrey Roberts Your dad; all those years growing up next door neighbors, it never occurred to me that he might have been a great HS athlete. He’s easy to pick out of a crowd, even way back then. Looks a lot like you, Tom. JUST like you!

Thanks, John. Lots of familiar faces on the team. Louie Schaub went on to play in our college (as an end!). There’s our old HS chemistry in front, and many others. They had even worse equipment and fewer players than we did as seniors. BTW, my brother Jeff died two years ago only 65. Way too soon. Hope all is well and thanks again.

My father was Paul Boyd. I have another football picture but I’ve never seen this one. Thanks

Here's a question for the old timers. I'm guessing this photo is from about 1947- 53. That's my dad Robert on the chord organ, grandmother Mabel at the piano and Frankie Slamecka on drums. Can anyone supply a name for the sax player? My mom thought his last name was Hosley. Don't know if that is correct. When I was very young, Dad told a story about their sax player dying in a cabin fire. Apparently the fire started when he dropped a glass jug of gasoline. Dad pointed out the site where the cabin used to be, down over the bank in the woods, on the way to Denton Hill. The chimney may still have been standing then.
I had the impression that it was my grandad's (John) cabin but again, I'm not sure. I was about 5 or 6 when I first heard the story.

Dale Ulkins What an incredible photo. I had no idea Frank Slameca was a drummer. The fire sounds like the fire that also involved teacher Jim Berger. If so I'll dig out the old scrapbooks and try to photograph the story. I remember it being in one of them.

Thomas Maynard
Thomas Maynard The burned cabin sounds like Old Bill Fish's "Golly's Folly" located in the place you describe, the Nine mine creek. A Kelsey boy died in that fire. One of the survivors, still living is Jim Berger..

Thomas Maynard Frankie was quite a drum player. He also had a uniform and played in the CHS marching band in the forties.

Dale Angood I appreciate the help. I already know more than I did. I remember Bill Fish as one of Grandad's friends so that part makes sense. I remember us visiting Frank when I was young. They lived in one of the last houses up on the bank before Rubbertown.

Susan Busch Holmberg
Susan Busch Holmberg There was a fire in a cabin that some young men died. Jim Burger who ended up being a history teacher at CHS. Jim was one of the men in the fire, but he lived but was very badly burned. Yes one of the boys did drop a glass gallon of gasline in front of a fire place and that's what started the fire.
