When Daniel Clark Sr., and family came by ox team from Connecticutt 1816, they found temporary shelter in the deserted Sartwell cabin until their log house was built about two miles north of Coudersport. His blacksmith shop became a commissioners' office and in his log cabin was taught the first school by a fugitive from justice, named Hurlburt. It is also recorded that Israel Merrick taught school in it in 1820. The children of Daniel Clark, of John Peet and of John Taggart, south of Coudersport, and children from Lymansville were the pupils.
In 1822 John Dingman and John Lyman contracted to clear the public square. In April, 1823, Isaac Lyman was granted $27 for clearing land at Coudersport and in June, $10 for clearing the town plot. Peter Knickerbocker continued the clearing in 1824.
In 1824 John L. Cartee purchased for $16 the square on which the jail is located. He leased from the Commissioners three of four squares, sowed them to wheat, and erected the frame for a house nearly on the site of the jail.
On May 10,1825, with his wife, two-year-old son, Lafayette, and step-daughter, Mary Ann Knight, aged 15, he returned and completed the house. This was the first tavern and was the stopping place of John Keating when on his annual visits. In 1825 he was accompanied by his daughter, Eulalia, and by his daughter-in-law. All traveled on horseback. The wheat which Mr. Cartee harvested was ground in a grist mill called the Red Mill, built in 1815 by Henry Dingman at the mouth of Dingman Run.
[MARY ANN KNIGHT]
In 1825 Timothy Ives Jr., was elected county treasurer. In May 1826, he, with his wife and daughter, Mary, seven months old, came from his home in Bingham Township on horseback by way of Andrews Settlement and boarded at the Cartee House while he erected a dwelling house on Second Street on the site of the First National Bank. He also built a small frame store on the southwest corner of East and Second Streets which faced East Street. His store goods were brought by wagon from New York City. Factory cloth was 50 cents per yard and other goods in proportion.
Michael Hinckle, who had married Nancy, only daughter of the pioneer, William Ayers, was the next to settle in Coudersport. He purchased what is now the Court House square, erected a dwelling house on the southeast corner of it and a log blacksmith shop north of the house where he worked for several years. It is said that he made the nails used in the construction of the first Court House.
On July 4, 1826, a child was born to this family, the first birth in the village, and the following January the mother's death was the first.
The first cemeteries were on the east side of Main Street, north of the river and on the east side of North Main Street, nearly opposite the Niles Hill Road. In 1827 Versel Dickinson

In 1827 Luther Strong came from Allegany County, New York, and purchased 117 acres of land extending from Seventlh Street northward. On a site east of the Anchor Toy factory he built a saw mill and a grist mill. He sold the property for $2500 to Julius Crittenden by deed on January 16, 1843.
Mr. Crittenden sold 87 acres of the original tract, together with the mill property, to Dr. 0. T. Ellison for $725, having dispoded of the remainder for village lots in 1873.
Henry Crittenden built a mill at the mouth of Dump Hollow which is often confused with the Julius Crittenden Mills.
Luther Strong was assisted in building his mills by Nathan Crary who made a clearing on the top of west hill and built a house but abandoned it when he discovered that the land had been allocated by John Keating for school purposes. The hill was called Crary Hill for many years.
In 1829 Dennis Hall built a large dwelling house on the northeast corner of East and Third Streets. It was the first house to have plastered rooms.
John Peet, who, in 1811 settled on the river road one half mile below Coudersport, was the first to act in the capacity of a preacher. He officiated at funerals and frequently read sermons or preached extemporaneously. In 1825 Father Conant, a Methodist missionary, living et what now is Westfield, Pa., came by way of Pine Creek and held services in the homes of the settlers.
In 1832 the R

If you look on my family tree, the information under the photos will connect you to John Reinhold Jr's family tree. John has a lot more information about the Roberts, plus a lot of photos. He's related to our Roberts and the Perkins family that used to own a lot of land around Raymond and Ulysses. 20 hours ago Thanks! 10 hours ago Hi John, I'm looking forward to a DNA test of someone I believe is my sister's (recently discovered to be my half-sister) first cousin. If she is my sister's 1st cousin, then the family tree I have found for my sister leads back to Samuel Roberts married to Elizabeth Hicks. This will add DNA science to what, so far, is a paper/document trail to my Roberts and Hicks connection. I do have some DNA relatives who, as far as I've found so far, are only related to me with ancestors connected to Otis Hicks. But I'm looking forward to this new DNA test to add more confirmation. This ancestry/DNA stuff can be very confusing.

My 2nd great grandfather - David Snyder; he was married to Laura Chase
My 3rd great grandfather - Solomon Snyder married to Hannah Stein
Laura Chase's parents were Johnson Chase married to Sarah Roberts
Sarah Roberts' parents were Samuel Roberts married to Elizabeth Hicks
It's the Elizabeth Hicks lineage that leads back to the Billingtons on my family tree.
I'll sort this out later today.
Do you use genealogy software?
I use FAmily Tree Maker by Ancestry.com and did the FTDNA, which I just got for my whole family, literally swabbing last night.
Thanks for your lineage, I'll lay mine out for you later.
I started with 23andMe and discovered by DNA composition, which was a bit of a surprise, with some Jewish ancestry.
That made me very curious, so I got an account with Ancestry.com to see if I could find who the Jews were in my family tree.
I'm still trying to solve that puzzle but in the process discovered way more about my ancestors than I ever imagined possible.
Sunday 8:55am
I was wrong about Elizabeth Hicks, although she was already in my tree.
I've filled your lineage in, but I don't go all the way back to the Mayflower from her, gotta do that yet.
I've been trying to get a report out with my simple Mayflower lineage, but I think I'll just have to write them out, like you did.
I worked on this last night, intrigued by the Roberts & Hicks connections.
More later.
Sunday 10:21am
They moved to Potter County from Livingston Count, NY
Sunday 2:23pm
Elizabeth Hicks lived in Springwater, Livingston County, NY. Her father, Otis Hicks moved there from Rehobath, MA
I have found a few DNA relatives whose only connection to me that I could find on their family trees could be found through Otis and Elizabeth Hicks.
Sunday 5:00pm
Livingston County, several of my families came to Potter County from there: Snyder, Barr, Shay...
After Billington, what are your family names off the Mayflower? I'm trying to connect your families, and I'm filling in a lot in mine in the meantime. I love this stuff!
Larry,
I'm going to paste my lineage from Billington, hope you can read it here:

Going in reverse, from me to Francis Billington:
Me
My mother- Dorothy Snyder Herbstritt
My grandfather - Lawrence Snyder
My great grandfather - Ford Snyder
Ford's parents - David Snyder m. Laura Chase
Laura's parents - Johnson Chase m. Sarah Roberts (from Springwater, Livingston Co., NY)
Sarah's parents - Samuel Roberts m. Elizabeth Hicks
Elizabeth's parents - Otis Hicks m. Elizabeth Dunham
Otis's parents - Aaron Hicks m. Elizabeth Briggs
Aaron's parents - Benjamin Hicks m. Sarah Kingsley
[The parents of Aaron Hicks was - Benjamin Hicks m. Anne Ormsby
(Benjamin's parents - Ephraim Hicks m. Sarah Kingsley)]
Sarah's parents - John Kingsley Sr m. Sarah Sabin
Sarah's parents - Samuel Sabin m. Mary Billington
Mary's parents - Francis Billington m. Christian Penn (she was married to a guy named Francis Eaton, who was a passenger on the Mayflower and then died) I guess she liked the name "Francis"
I believe Christian was descendant of the same Penn whose other descendant owned Pennsylvania.
I just noticed that I skipped one set of parents.
The parents of Aaron Hicks was - Benjamin Hicks m. Anne Ormsby
(Benjamin's parents - Ephraim Hicks m. Sarah Kingsley)
then from Sarah Kingsley on it's the same as I have it above
I haven't explored too far beyond on this lineage, but I wouldn't be surprised to find the that the Kingsley lineage leads back to the Plantagenet family line
Yes, I did that, and it does!
Some dropped the 'g' along the way, over a dispute with the king.
Thanks for the above, I'll complete that in my tree.
Do you have this photo of Sara Roberts Chase?
I do. Where'd you find it?
I have a picture of Johnson Chase as well
ancestry.com, family tree of Jonathan Snyder
As a result of a 23andMe DNA test that I got for my sister, Debbie, we discovered that she's my half sister.
She's related to the Cory family, Ed, Paul, Dean are her uncles.
I discovered that her grandmother was Lida Roberts, who was married to Glen Cory.
Lida's lineage runs back to Samuel Roberts married to Elizabeth Hicks

trees.ancestry.com
wow! I just got FTDNA kits for the rest of my family and they all swabbed last night. It would be nice to have results by Christmas.
I think I just sent you a link to my Ancestry.com family tree
I did 23andMe and the DNA test offered by Ancestry.com
23andMe is more detailed with its ethnic dissection and it also offers a tool to compare shared chromosomes with relatives. I like the Ancestry.com a little better because there are so many people who have developed family trees on their site and it's easier to compare family trees with DNA relatives.
The Plantagenet connection doesn't surprise me. I can't tell you how many times I've come upon that name in my family tree. With the exception of my father's paternal side, every lineage of both my parents leads back to them.
I had never heard of John "Lackland" Plantagenet until last December when I happened upon his name on my father's maternal side.
Who most intrigues me in Plantagenet family is his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine and her father and grandfather, both Troubadours.
Sunday 9:35pm
got the tree, very useful. I have different parents for Elizabeth Hicks- I have Elias Hicks and Jemina Seaman. Trying to sort this out.
Elias lived on Long Island
He was a Quaker minister who was an outspoken abolitionist
He never lived anywhere near Livingston County, NY
For a long time I had Elias on my family tree and liking it because the guy was pretty impressive. He even left a lasting impression on Walt Whitman
I believe if you go back far enough on the Elias Hicks lineage you will match a common ancestor with Otis Hicks
How did you find Otis? All of the ancestry.com info points to Elias, but I see what you mean about the location.
I found Otis on one of my DNA cousin's family tree
I found a Quaker Genealogy sheet that says that Elias "placed his dt in N.P. school 9-17-1807." "N.P. school"?
I'm not sure was "N.P. school" is
I read that Elias' life was threatened by a guy in the South because of his anti-slavery stance. Elias went to visit the guy and debated with him....weeks later the guy freed his slaves
From all I had read about Elias Hicks, I was disappointed to have to remove him from my family tree but the geographical logistics of Otis and Aaron Hicks made more sense to me. Also, I think if you look at Elias Hicks' profile, his daughter Elizabeth didn't marry Samuel Roberts
I have found three DNA relatives who only connection with my family tree are people on the Otis Hicks lineage. So I'm convinced he's the correct ancestor
give me data to locate him? birth? death?
found him.
I have Otis Hicks b. 23 November 1767 in Rehobath, Massachusetts d. ? in Springwater, Livingston, NY, USA
Thx
BTW, we're 6th cousins, once removed.
Monday 6:12am
Who are our most recent common ancestors?

Day job getting in the way, sorry to leave you hangin'. Back tomorrow.

Larry, our MRCA (I made that acronym up, but maybe it's actually used) are Peter ROBERTS & Rebecca VAN WINKLE (both born in 1744), Samuel Roberts' (b.1794, m Elizabeth Hicks, do Otis) grandparents.
BTW, I'm not finding ANY connection between Elizabeth and Otis, but I'm confident you're right, first because of the DNA, about which I'd like to learn more, and second, because of the geography, as you pointed out (Long Island vs upstate NY). I'll search more on this soon, but I've already changed my tree to reflect Elizabeth d/o Otis Hicks. What a thrill, to add you and your line to my Tree, and then to get a major re-direction!

If you look on my family tree, the information under the photos will connect you to John Reinhold Jr's family tree.
John has a lot more information about the Roberts, plus a lot of photos. He's related to our Roberts and the Perkins family that used to own a lot of land around Raymond and Ulysses.

Hi John,
I'm looking forward to a DNA test of someone I believe is my sister's (recently discovered to be my half-sister) first cousin.

That's great though! What a tool has been handed to us with the DNA! I've bought some time on my work project til tomorrow, so I'm buckling down to look at the lead you gave me above, John Reinhold. Raymond/Ulysses is full of relatives! Williams/Alesworth, Snyder, Dingman, Thompson, MacMasters...
Chat Conversation End
Seen 8:12pm
There's another distant cousin, Brad Tinnon, who sent me a map made in 1892 that shows all the sectioned off farmlands around Raymond & Ulysses. There was post office in Raymond.
