Wagon Accident - "Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Severely Injured"
26 Jun 1914 , Sartwell Creek, Potter, Pennsylvania
From the 3 Jul 1914 Port Allegany Reporter: "Rein Broke Going Down Steep Hill in Pleasant Valley and Horses Ran Away. Bones broken and sustained a serious shock. Others of fimily injured but all are expected to recover and improving daily now. Had suscessfully passed the worst hill in the county.----Fred Ernst (Sr.), a Sartwell Creek farmer, was badly injured last week Thursday evening by being thrown from his wagon in a runaway. Mr. and Mrs. Ernst and two children had been to the Burr barn raising on Lillebridge Creek driving a pair of colts and were returning home. They had successfully passed down the worst hill in the county with the young team and had driven to the Beckwith farm when one of the horses jumped, breaking a rein. This swung the team against the bank, tipping up the wagon and throwing Mrs. ernst andthe family out. Mr Ernst was pulled over the dashboard of the wagon and was hurt so badly that he could hang on no longer and the team ran away. The children escaped with light bruises. Mrs. Ernst was so badly shocked and her limb broken. Physicians wer summoned and the fractures reduced and the victims made as comfortable as possible. They are recovering rapidly as can be expected. The wagon was somewhat wrecked and the horses slightly scratched up."

MR. AND MRS. ERNST SEVERELY INJURED
... Were Thrown From Their Carriage as Horses Ran Away. The Others Escaped Without Injury.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ernst were quite severely injured Thursday afternoon by being thrown out of their carriage as their horses were running away. He has five ribs broken an is severely bruised about the body and the doctor fears there might be some internal injuries. She seemed to strike on her head and face. Her face is bruised but not cut while the blow to the head rendered her unconscious for several hours and caused a concussion of the brain, although the skill is not broken or cracked. Their recovery will be slow. Their many Roulette friends sympathize with them in misfortune. The family consisting of themselves, their son Fred and daughter Erma and a boy by the name of -red Joseph were riding on Sartwell creek several miles above their home on Thursday afternoon when the colts which they were driving were frightened by some object by the side of the road and started to run, in trying to check them a line was broken, which turned the team to one side on to the bank which upset the carriage and threw them out. The young people all jumped and escaped without injury. As soon as possible they were brought home by their friends where Dr. Squires had been summoned and was waiting to dress their wounds and left them as comfortable as possible.
