Hi John,
My maiden name was Jackson, and Merrick was my Great-Great Paternal Grandfather. I have a fair amount of the family geneology documented. This is a link to Merrick's page on Family Tree Maker- and you can go back from there. If you have any other questions feel free to send me a message. My cousin Michael Reeves also is a terrific resource for the family geneology. Sandi (Jackson) Engiles

Hi Sandi! That's terrific, thank you!
I really appreciate this, so much information, adds definition to what I have.
Did you make those sculptures on your FB page?

No, I saw them at a fair and thought they were terrific so I took a few pictures to share with friends. The artist has a Facebook page called Twisted Mind Rusty Metal. Happy I could help with the genealogy.

Yeah, and nice to 'friend' another cousin! I'm working on a detailed all-inclusive family tree to 8th cousins or so; I mean, not just to know my ancestries, but also to ID those living relatives, to get a better understanding of who I am, or... something like that. Also interested in the genetic connections within Potter Co, especially descendants of the early settlers & how they relate to mine, like Dingman, Snyder, Brock, Williams, ...

Do you have any of the books by Robert Ray Lyman (link to books on Amazon)-
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?ie=UTF8&field-author=Robert+Ray+Lyman&search-alias=books&text=Robert+Ray+Lyman&sort=relevancerank
I have read the "fun" ones (Forbidden Lands, Strange Events in the Black Forest)- and they have snippets in interesting facts about the early families. I didn't even know the others existed until I did the Google search. I am guessing the Potter County Historical Society probably has copies, and I know they have a lot of great information there and they are always willing to help. Plus- feel free to ask- I will answer anything that I can. I will be rather limited to memory and the internet for a few more months (we just moved and all my research info is packed away)- but I will be happy to answer anything I can.

I forgot to ask, which of Merrick's children is your ancestor?

I answered earlier from my iPhone, but I don't see it here. Merrick was married to my 3rd great aunt, Sally Weimer, so not a direct ancestor. There is a strength of character in that newspaper photo of him.

He was apparently a tough, man with quite the sense of humor. I have some information about him during the Civil war, that I will try to locate and send on if you are interested. It will be a few months, but I will be happy to forward it.
Have you seen the information on the Weimer Family
(http://www.bnbhyde.com/weimerweb/WeimerFamilyHistory.pdf )
Lots of interesting information here (much of it from the Lyman book about the history of Roulette.)
I love the bits about George being a baker in Napoleon's army (I have also worked as a baker)- and about the family almost being sold into slavery on their way to the U.S. I will try to poke around what I have to see if I can locate anything of interest to you.
Oh- and another sibling of Sally also married a Jackson- Merrick's brother William Victor, who had the rickets as a child, and developed a hunchback. After the Civil War- he went out west as a gambler. I have his six gun and holster. So be warned, we have quite a few characters in this part of the family tree.
I had to chuckle when I see that you live in Richmond. We just moved to Florida from Stafford Va on Dec 30th - so we were practically neighbors for many years without even knowing it.

His wife Sally Weimer was my 3rd great aunt. I'm not directly descended fr Merrick.
Oops, noticed I hadn't sent that.
Yes, I have most of the Weimer stuff, I remain a little suspicious about the bondage story, it shows up a lot in other trees.
Cool about the fun!
& Yes, as much info as possible, when you can get it.
Adding your info to my tree as we 'speak'!
