Caroline Easton Retires After Almost 40 Years Of Service
paseal1One of Potter County’s longest-serving and most popular employees retired effective Friday, Oct. 23, after almost 40 years of service. Caroline (Gaberseck) Easton, an administrative/clerical employee in the District Justice office in Coudersport, was feted during a surprise party at the Gunzburger Building.
She began service in the office of her husband, Edward L. Easton, and remained on the job as an assistant to his successor, Michelle Tasillo, as well as the current district judge, Annette Easton, who is Ed and Caroline’s daughter. During her time, Caroline witnessed the evolution of the state’s minor judiciary, including many changes in the responsibilities of a district judge. The position was professionalized in the 1970s when justices of the peace became district magistrates, and was restructured again more recently as magistrates became district judges.
Alterations of the district’s configuration, as the number of district judges in Potter County shrank from five to three, new reporting requirements and the advent of computer-based records are among the changes she has seen over the years.
Caroline said she plans to spend more time with her husband and tend to the couple’s home and property on East Second Street.
