"He placed butt of his shotgun on the floor, leaned the muzzle of the gun against his breast and pulled the trigger, causing a charge of shot to pass through his body, tearing a part of his heart. While Mr. Kern was conscious from the time he arrived here until the end, he was too weak to converse freely." Brought to hospital at 02:30h from Galeton. Survived by his parents, his wife and one child. Per one neighbor, husband and wife "both were a little hot headed." "Mr. Kern was formerly employed as a car repairman in the B&S Railroad shops here, but was laid off with several others last February and was not among the men who quit work when the shopmen's strike was called. He was a veteran of the World War, serving overseas. At the time of the outbreak of the war, he desired to enlist, and had considerable trouble in getting admitted on account of his age, but gained consent and made an excellent soldier." He enlisted at the age of 16, made corporal shortly after having enlisted, the youngest corporal in the US Army. United in marriage after the war to Miss Madeline Dent of Galeton. Galeton Young Man Died at Blossburg Hospital Friday Morning. Walter Kern, aged 20, of Galeton, died at the Blossburg hospital at 10:15 o'clock last Friday morning, from gun shot wounds in the heart. Mr. Kern was taken to the hospital at 2:30 o'clock Friday morning from Galeton. To Dr. L. G. Cole he stated that he had a quarrel with his wife at their home in Galeton Thursday night. The dispute became very heated about 11 o'clock when Mr. Kern, according to the story he told the physician, placed the butt of his shotgun on the floor, leaned the muzzle of the gun against his breast and pulled the trigger, causing a charge of shot to pass through his body, tearing a part of his heart. While Mr. Kern was conscious from the time he arrived at the hospital until the end, he was too weak to converse freely. About the time of his death his mother arrived from Galeton. She stated that Mr. Kern was survived by his parents, his wife and one child. A Galeton correspondent says: "Kern has had disputes with his wife before, according to the police, although he had never been arrested. Mr. Kern was formerly employed as a car repairman in the B. & S. Railroad shops, but was laid off with several others last February and was not among the men who quit work
when the shopmen's strike was. called. He was a veteran of the World War, serving overseas. At the time of the outbreak of the war he desired to enlist, and had considerable trouble in getting admitted on account of his age, but gained consent and made an excellent soldier.“
