IS IN TROUBLE
Edward Leitch of Roulette Arrested By United States Marshall for Having Counterfeit Money
Edward Leitch, for some years resident of Roulette and the keeper of a restaurant there, is in duranceville in Buffalo.
Leitch is charged with passing and having in his possession counterfeit money.
When arrested by the United States marshall, sixty-two counterfeit half dollars were found in his pockets.
Leitch was arrested in Dunkirk, N. Y. and taken before a United States commissioner in Buffalo and after examination was held to the grand jury.
After being put through something of a sweating process, Leitch claimed that he was only being used as a catspaw for other persons in Dunkirk, who were equipped with a real counterfeiting outfit, the necessary moulds and every thing to turn out the spurious money and fool the public. As a result the United State marshal accompanied Leitch back to Dunkirk where he took him to the alleged abode of the counterfeiters and there it is said the officer found the outfit as Leitch had described.
Much to the chagrin of the United States marshal, however, there were (n)one of the alleged counterfeiters, or principals as Leitch described them, about the place and in spite of diligent effort none could he found, of any track of them.
According to Leitch, they had evidently suspicioned that something was wrong or that there was danger and had skipped out. Leitch in the meantime will have to remain in jail in Buffalo and await the action of the federal grand jury. If he is indicted he will of course be put on trial.
Leitch is known to a good many Potter county people and to nearly every one in Roulette where he was in business for some years. He is about forty years of age and some years ago married Miss Cleo Taus- cher, a very excellent young woman and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Tauscher. Mr. and Mrs. Leitch have a fine young daughter and both the mother and daughter are now in Roulette.
While a resident of Roulette, it is charged, Leitch at one time passed worthless check at the hardware store of Card and Barr but that he afterward made it good.
