"History of the Counties of McKean,..." p. 1250: Frederick D. Weimer, farmer, P.O. Roulette, son of George and Eve Weimer, was born in Roulette township, Potter Co, Penn., August 12,1832. His father was a native of France and came to America in 1836 (?- jcw- 1830?), locating in Roulette Township, near the mouth of Fishing Creek, just below the red school house. The country was wild, and he had to clear his farm and at that time had to go 80 miles to mill, the nearest being at Jersey Shore; being gone at one time longer than he had expected, his family were compelled to subsist on potatoes and salt. On this farm the parents made their home until death. They had a family of 18 children, viz: George, Eve (deceased), Michael (deceased), Mrs. Barbara Barr, Mrs. Margaret Manning, Mrs. Sally Jackson, Barnett (deceased), Martin (deceased) Frederick D., Mrs. Catherine Jackson (deceased), Mrs. Caroline D. Davison (deceased), William, Mrs. Dorcas Marsh, John V., Mrs. Julia A. Tompkins (deceased), Mrs. Luzerne Hazen (deceased), Catherine (a babe born in Europe and buried at sea), and Jacob (who died when a child). Frederick D. remained at home until he went to learn the blacksmith's trade, after which he located in Roulette, and engaged in that business until 1875, when he removed to Clara township, where he purchased the farm he now owns and occupies. He has since then been a farmer, blacksmith, carpenter, mason, lumberman, etc., doing all kinds of work required on his farm. Frederick D. Weimer... married, in 1859, Anna, daughter of C. W. and Louisa Johnson, of Roulette, and their children were Ortenis and Don F. (both deceased), Ali and Ortenis. Mr. Weimer is a supporter of the Democratic party. He has been a school director nearly 3/4 of the time since old enough to be interested in educational matters.

- [S201] Historical Sketches of Potter County. Author?, p. 169,170.
In 1830, several families came from Havre (LaHavre), France, to this new world. They were George and Eva (Weiderich) Weimer, Jacob and Sally (Der) Weiderich, Christian and Margaret (Weiderich) Schadenberger and his parents, Balthasard and Elizabeth (Kaufman) Schadenberger, and another Weiderich brother who went to Canada. The captain of the ship on which they sailed took them almost to New Orleans where he intended to sell them as slaves. They were about to throw him overboard when he promised to return them to Philadelphia. There they bought teams of horses and oxen and started for Potter County. After a few days on Ayers Hill with the Joshua Jacksons, the Weimers and Weiderichs came down the Allegheny and found a site where Fishing Creek joined the river. George Weimer was a baker by trade and had baked bread in Napoleon's army. His property extended from the Pomeroy Bridge (Roulette) east to where the Baptist Church is today. They suffered many privations- for their coffee, they dried raspberry leaves and for saleratus (soda) they burned powdered corn. George had five sons (three in the Civil War, Michael, Martin, and John) George W. married Laura Lyman and Otis became a great lumberman and often sailed rafts down the Allegheny.

Cushing, L. W. Corp. Oct. 8, 62 3 Discharged by G.O. May 31, 65.
Leavitt Wilson Cushing was born in 1839 in Steuben County, New York. His occupation is listed as "farmer" and at the age of 23 he mustered into the 53rd Penn. Vols., Infantry, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, as a Private in Company G. He is described as 5 foot 7 inches tall with blue eyes, light hair and light complexion. On December 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia, he was severely wounded in the shoulder and wrist. He was fighting along side his older brother, Benjamin, who was also severely wounded. After Leavitt recovered he returned to his regiment and was wounded again, this time in the leg at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. Returning again to his regiment, on May 1, 1864 he was promoted to Corporal, and took part in the battles of Wilderness, Spottsylvania and Cold Harbor. On June 22, 1864, in action around Petersburg, Virginia, he was captured along with 1600 others and taken to Richmond, Virginia, and put in Libbie Prison. Later, while being transported to Andersonville he made his escape and after three weeks of adventurous travel arrived at Fayetteville, West Virginia, where a company of Union soldiers was stationed. Due to failing health he underwent a period of recovery until January of 1865 when he returned to his regiment and took part in the conflicts that culminated at Appomattox Court House, where on that historic day, April 9, 1865, standing beside his brother, 1st Lieutenant, Benjamin Cushing, witnessed the events that led up to the surrender of General Lee to General Grant.
Leavitt W. Cushing was discharged by General Order No. 26, Army of the Potomac, on May 31, 1865.
In 1874, Leavitt married Susan E. (Bassett) Douglas. Susan was born in 1835. They adopted two children, Leavitt and Nellie. Susan lived until 1930. Leavitt died in 1918 and is buried in the town cemetery in Ulysses, Pennsylvania.
In the years following the war, both Benjamin and Leavitt grew Timothy hay for the carriage and dray horses of New York but were eventually put out of business with the advent of the automobile.
1st Lieutenant, Benjamin J. Cushing's story appears above.

Soldier's Memorial in Coudersport, PA
Submitted by Barb Hyde, 2009
Click to open enlarged photo
Potter County's memorial to its veterans is in the courthouse square behind the courthouse.
The column for the memorial was raised on December 20, 1874. On the four sides of the base of the column are engraved the names of the soldiers who died in the Civil War, organized by township. The 318 names were carved by Joseph Schwartzenbach, the brewer from Germania, who was also a talented stonecutter.
In April of 1887, the statue of a Civil War soldier was placed on the top of the column to complete the monument.
The completed monument was dedicated on June 8, 1887.
More recently, the monument has been expanded to honor all veterans.
Four stone benches, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, face the monument. Behind them is a low wall with a center stone that says
IN MEMORY OF THE VETERANS OF ALL WARS
The list of soldiers who died is a historic list, even though we know it is incomplete. The names of the soldiers inscribed on the base of the monument are:

Who Served in the Civil War?
This set of pages contains the names of over 1600 men (and one woman) who called Potter County home and served in the Civil War.
Some were born here, others came to Potter County later in life. They all helped make the county what it is today.
We owe them thanks and recognition.
And many thanks to Mary Bryant, Charles & Kathleen Heffner, Frankie Stonemetz, Barb Hyde, Ed Worman, and others for a lot of hard work in compiling the list!
