Oct 18, 1923 Betsey Burt Snyder died at her home on Pleasant Street, Monday evening, October 8th. She was a daughter of the late Alanson and Anna Lewis Burt. She was born in Upper Lyle Broome County, New York, in 1843 and came with her parents to Ulysses in 1849, where she spent the greater part of her life. In 1864, she was married to Jacob Snyder of Sweden Hill and he died in March, 1895. She is survived by her three daughters: - Mrs. E. H. Hovey of Ulysses, - Mrs. F. J. Andrus of Birmingham, Mich, and - Mrs. Alice Greenless who lived with her also three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was a member of the M. E. Church for 58 years, and was always faithful in church and home duties. She had a refined and loving congenial nature that won her a large circle of friends and the respect al all. She had been quite helpless for the past two years but was tenderly cared for by her daughters who sadly mourn her demise. The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. C. A. Williams officiated and - interment was made in the Ulysses cemetery. Those from away to attend the funeral were: Mrs. F. J. Andrus of Birmingham, Mich; Mrs. Robert Doodson and daughter Betty Jean of Rochester; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brigham and son of Clearfield, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Snyder of Wellsville, and Mr. and Mrs.Riley Galpin of Rochester, N.Y. 	20200324HAv- -CLIPPED FROM The Potter Enterprise Coudersport, Pennsylvania 19 Nov 1908, Thu • Page 1 BY tim_nenno • 25 Feb 2018 Mrs. Alice Bump-McCracken Nearly Killed Stabbed and Slashed by Her Cousin Fred Suhr Mrs. Alice Bump-McCracken, was attacked last Saturday morning by Fred Suhr and nearly killed. She is in a very serious condition but it is believed that she will recover if blood poison does not set in. Mrs McCracken was spending the day with her mother, Mrs. Snyder, who lives about one and a half miles from Ulysses. For some time it has been thought that Fred Suhr was insane and several months ago proceedings were begun to have him removed to an asylum but as he seemed improved and harmless, he was permitted to remain with his parents who are highly respected people and who have the sympathy of everyone in the terrible calamity that has befallen them. Fred is their only son and naturally a good ambitious boy and a great source of comfort to his parents. On Saturday he had heard that his cousin Alice was at her mother's home and expressed a desire to see her. His father tried to persuade him not to go to the Snyder home but he insisted. The father feeling un-easy followed him. The unfortunate young man entered the home of his aunt and at once made a desperate dash for Mrs. McCracken with a butcher knife that he had concealed in his coat sleeve. He stabbed her five times in the back, twice In the neck and several times in the face. There are two savage gashes in her throat, just missing the jugular vein, In fighting for her life her hands were terribly cut, the little finger of one hand being nearly severed. The insane boy seemed to have no desire to injure anyone else and Mrs. Snyder fought desperately to save her daughter and but for her aid, Mrs. McCracken would undoubtedly have been killed. The unfortunate young woman was Immediately removed to her home in Ulysses and Dr. Church was summoned and everything possible done to alleviate her suffering. Her throat is so badly lacerated that it is with difficulty that nourishment is taken, still it is believd she will recover. After the horrible assault, Suhr took to the woods and Immediate hunt was made for him but the searchers failed to locate him. However, about ten o'clock he returned to his home and was taken from there to Ulysses where he was locked up. He said that before the attack he hated Alice but that since that he did not. He had made threats against other residents of the neighborhood, among them being O. E. Crandall and there was general uneasiness and alarm throughout the vicinity until he was safely lodged behind the bars. Tuesday morning a lunacy commission consisting of Drs. Church and Eaton of Ulysses and Prothonotary F. N. Newton investigated the case and found the young man insane. He was brought to Coudersport Tuesday and lodged in Jail. The order of Court was that he be taken to Warren by the sheriff and he will be taken there at once. Mrs. Alice Bump-McCracken Nearly Killed
Stabbed and Slashed by Her Cousin Fred Suhr
Mrs. Alice Bump-McCracken, was attacked last Saturday morning by Fred Suhr and nearly killed. She is in a very serious condition but it is believed that she will recover if blood poison does not set in.
Mrs McCracken was spending the day with her mother, Mrs. Snyder, who lives about one and a half miles from Ulysses.
For some time it has been thought that Fred Suhr was insane and several months ago proceedings were begun to have him removed to an asylum but as he seemed improved and harmless, he was permitted to remain with his parents who are highly respected people and who have the sympathy of everyone in the terrible calamity that has befallen them. Fred is their only son and naturally a good ambitious boy and a great source of comfort to his parents.
On Saturday he had heard that his cousin Alice was at her mother's home and expressed a desire to see her. His father tried to persuade him not to go to the Snyder home but he insisted. The father feeling un-easy followed him. The unfortunate young man entered the home of his aunt and at once made a desperate dash for Mrs. McCracken with a butcher knife that he had concealed in his coat sleeve. He stabbed her five times in the back, twice In the neck and several times in the face. There are two savage gashes in her throat, just missing the jugular vein, In fighting for her life her hands were terribly cut, the little finger of one hand being nearly severed. The insane boy seemed to have no desire to injure anyone else and Mrs. Snyder fought desperately to save her daughter and but for her aid, Mrs. McCracken would undoubtedly have been killed. The unfortunate young woman was Immediately removed to her home in Ulysses and Dr. Church was summoned and everything possible done to alleviate her suffering. Her throat is so badly lacerated that it is with difficulty that nourishment is taken, still it is believd she will recover.
After the horrible assault, Suhr took to the woods and Immediate hunt was made for him but the searchers failed to locate him. However, about ten o'clock he returned to his home and was taken from there to Ulysses where he was locked up. He said that before the attack he hated Alice but that since that he did not.
He had made threats against other residents of the neighborhood, among them being O. E. Crandall and there was general uneasiness and alarm throughout the vicinity until he was safely lodged behind the bars.
Tuesday morning a lunacy commission consisting of Drs. Church and Eaton of Ulysses and Prothonotary F. N. Newton investigated the case and found the young man insane. He was brought to Coudersport Tuesday and lodged in Jail. The order of Court was that he be taken to Warren by the sheriff and he will be taken there at once.

Betsey Burt Snyder died at her home on Pleasant Street, Monday evening, October 8th.
She was a daughter of the late Alanson and Anna Lewis Burt.
She was born in Upper Lyle Broome County, New York, in 1843 and came with her parents to Ulysses in 1849, where she spent the greater part of her life.
In 1864, she was married to Jacob Snyder of Sweden Hill and he died in March, 1895.
She is survived by her three daughters:
- Mrs. E. H. Hovey of Ulysses,
- Mrs. F. J. Andrus of Birmingham, Mich, and
- Mrs. Alice Greenless who lived with her
also three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was a member of the M. E. Church for 58 years, and was always faithful in church and home duties. She had a refined and loving congenial nature that won her a large circle of friends and the respect al all.
She had been quite helpless for the past two years but was tenderly cared for by her daughters who sadly mourn her demise. The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. C. A. Williams officiated and
- interment was made in the Ulysses cemetery.
Those from away to attend the funeral were:
Mrs. F. J. Andrus of Birmingham, Mich;
Mrs. Robert Doodson and daughter Betty Jean of Rochester;
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brigham and son of Clearfield,
Mr. and Mrs. Julian Snyder of Wellsville, and
Mr. and Mrs.Riley Galpin of Rochester, N.Y.

Died Burt___At her home in Ulysses, Pa. April 27, 1899, after a painful illness Mrs. Anna Burt in the 80th year of her age.
The deceased was a daughter of Wm and Ruth Lewis, born at Lysle, Broome County, N. Y. Nov. 12, 1819.
Here she resided till her marriage with the late Alanson Burt, August 22, 1838.
They began housekeeping at once in WIllett, Cortland county, N.Y. Four children were born to them here.
In Sept of 1848 they moved to Ulysses. During the winter they stayed with her parents. In the spring of 1850 they moved on to the farm where they lived till the death of her husband in the fall of 1893.
The following winter she spent mostly with her daughter Mrs. Wm Suhr, but in the spring she went back to her old home, her daughter Mrs. Betsy Snyder staying with her till her death. Early in life she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful member throughout her life. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a devoted wife and mother.

Hello all Snyder cousins from Potter county! As a descendant of Jacob Snyder b.1789 and Catherine Houseknecht b.1790 of Sweden Township, I have found a tiny detail about Jacob's parents that might lead to clues as to their identity. This detail is found in the 1870 census of Potter county that lists Jacob and his wife Elizabeth (his wife after the death of Catherine) as well as his grandsons Michael, Jacob and Richard, sons of his own son Daniel, as his neighbors.
As the website Ancestry indicates, many believe Jabob was born to a Jacob Snyder and Susannah Hoover of Pendelton, Virginia. Most of my research of Jacob centers around Lycoming county, Muncy Township. The Houseknechts too, all settled in Moreland. Jacob and Catherine would marry as teens so my guess was that this Snyder line probably originated in Berks and moved inland. Therefore, I never felt comfortable with the Virginia narrative due to distances between Muncy Township in Lycoming PA and Pendelton finding the details of time and place never agreed between the two lines.
But now we have some proof. Here in this census we find additional columns of information that ask about parentage and whether your parents are foreign born. His father is indicated as being "foreign born". This confirms my suspicion that his parents were immigrants. This is a huge piece of information that dispells the myth that he is from this Viginian line (which dates back to colonial Virgina).
His mother, on the other hand has no check mark in this column suggesting she was born in America. This too is significant, as now we can narrow any future searches to a Snyder/Schneider who either emigrated as a child with his family or alone as an adult. Jacob himself always stated he was born in PA. I make the assumption he might have been born in Berks, PA or maybe even in Lycoming county. Unfortunately, no documents of his birth have been found....yet.
So there's my small contribution to our family line. Perhaps we learn of his provenance now that we have an additional piece to the puzzle. Happy hunting Snyder family.

Hopefully, the birthplace of parents columns in the 1880 US census also include helpful evidence.

I've been researching a local cemetery here in Port Matilda, PA and I'm finding a lot of Houseknechts scattered around here, too, trying to figure out if we're related. We live on Ardery Hollow Lane, up in the hills; coincidence? Ardery is a family name in our Snyder branch.

John C Wetzel Hi John! I've been wanting to answer you as to why I make the assumption the Snyders came up from Berks Co., (Richmond) PA to Muncy. There is a Schneider line out of Richmond that is documented as having migrated to Muncy, Moreland and Franklin Townships along with Houseknechts. Another name that orbits around is SONES / SOHNS. I have matches to this name. Sones married into Houseknechts but also married Snyders. It's an assumption on my part, I know. I don't find any NY narratives yet. You will find it attached to Jacob Snyder's profile on family tree at Ancestry. It's titled Jacob Snyder of Sweden Township in .pdf format. Mrs. Alice Bump-McCracken Nearly Killed
Stabbed and Slashed by Her Cousin Fred Suhr
Mrs. Alice Bump-McCracken, was attacked last Saturday morning by Fred Suhr and nearly killed. She is in a very serious condition but it is believed that she will recover if blood poison does not set in.
Mrs McCracken was spending the day with her mother, Mrs. Snyder, who lives about one and a half miles from Ulysses.
For some time it has been thought that Fred Suhr was insane and several months ago proceedings were begun to have him removed to an asylum but as he seemed improved and harmless, he was permitted to remain with his parents who are highly respected people and who have the sympathy of everyone in the terrible calamity that has befallen them. Fred is their only son and naturally a good ambitious boy and a great source of comfort to his parents.
On Saturday he had heard that his cousin Alice was at her mother's home and expressed a desire to see her. His father tried to persuade him not to go to the Snyder home but he insisted. The father feeling un-easy followed him. The unfortunate young man entered the home of his aunt and at once made a desperate dash for Mrs. McCracken with a butcher knife that he had concealed in his coat sleeve. He stabbed her five times in the back, twice In the neck and several times in the face. There are two savage gashes in her throat, just missing the jugular vein, In fighting for her life her hands were terribly cut, the little finger of one hand being nearly severed. The insane boy seemed to have no desire to injure anyone else and Mrs. Snyder fought desperately to save her daughter and but for her aid, Mrs. McCracken would undoubtedly have been killed. The unfortunate young woman was Immediately removed to her home in Ulysses and Dr. Church was summoned and everything possible done to alleviate her suffering. Her throat is so badly lacerated that it is with difficulty that nourishment is taken, still it is believd she will recover.
After the horrible assault, Suhr took to the woods and Immediate hunt was made for him but the searchers failed to locate him. However, about ten o'clock he returned to his home and was taken from there to Ulysses where he was locked up. He said that before the attack he hated Alice but that since that he did not.
He had made threats against other residents of the neighborhood, among them being O. E. Crandall and there was general uneasiness and alarm throughout the vicinity until he was safely lodged behind the bars.
Tuesday morning a lunacy commission consisting of Drs. Church and Eaton of Ulysses and Prothonotary F. N. Newton investigated the case and found the young man insane. He was brought to Coudersport Tuesday and lodged in Jail. The order of Court was that he be taken to Warren by the sheriff and he will be taken there at once.

Sheriff Allen G. Kenneda left Friday morning for Warren. He had in custody Alfred Schwab and Fred Suhr checked for the asylum where they will be In safe keeping. Schwab is the maniac who escaped from the insane department of the County Home at one time and recently from the Warren Asylum. He is very cunning and strong and a very dangerous man when at large.
Fred Suhr is the young man who recently attempted to kill his cousin, Mrs. Alice Bump McCracken of Ulysses. The good people of this county will be glad to hear that these two men have been placed where they cannot wreak vengeance on their fellow beings.

The undersigned, Administrator of the above named decedent, late of Ulysses Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania, pursuant to an Order of the Orphans Court of Potter County dated May 18, 1943 will expose ,at public sale for the payment of decedent's debts, subject to a firm bid of $2400.00, on the premises situated in Ulysses Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania to the highest bidder on wednesday, June 9, 1943 at 2 PM, E.W. T, the following described real estate.

All those certain pieces, parcels or tracts of land situate, lying and being in the Township of Ulysses, County of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, bounded and de scribed as follows:
1. Beginning at the northeast corner hereof, being the southeast comer of lot now owned by John Lewis; thence south along the west line of lands of T. W. Burt 95.3 rods to a post; thence west 27 rods to a post; thence south 5 west 65 rods to the highway; thence along said highway south 84 west 30 rods; thence north 732 west 13.8 rods to the east line of the Drake lot; thence north along said east line and east line of Elijah Gridley lot 147.9 rods to the southwest corner of the lot of John Lewis aforesaid; thence east along the south line of said lot 90.2 rods to the place of beginning.
CONTAINING 80.8 acres be the same more or less and being part of Lot No. 33 of the Bingham Lands, Warrant 1264. 2. Beginning at post and stones at the northeast comer of land formerly owned by S. V. Drake; thence west along the north line of said lot 100 perches to a post; thence north forty-one and eight- i tenths perches to a post near the I highway; thence north 68 east 109.5 perches to the west line of lot conveyed by deed to John Lewis by Alanson and Anna Burt; thence south along said line and line of William Suhr and Mary Suhr 79.3 perches to the place of beginning.
CONTAINING 37.5 acres be the same more or less, it being the southeast corner of lands conveyed by deed to Elijah Gridley by Benoni Pierce in said Township.
EXCEPTING AND RESERVING from Parcel 2 above the following: Beginning at a point in the west line of the tract of land conveyed to the Grantor by Orvis Gridley and wife by deed recorded in Deed Book 40, page 194, said coiner being 18 rods south from the northwest corner of said tract and be ing in the east line of lands of the grantee; thence north 18 rods to the northwest corner of said Gridley lot, said corner being near the highway leading from Ulysses to Newfield; thence north 6854 east 34.2 perches; thence south 30 perches; thence west 32 perches to the place of beginning.
CONTAINING 4 1-3 acres more or less.
