It's been 18 years that I have not been able to give my mother flowers or a Mother's Day card. This post is in remembrance of her, Dorothy Louise Snyder Herbstritt.
My mom was a wannabe musician who possessed a good singing voice. She sounded nearly identical to Country & Western singer, Kitty Wells. She would sit by an old wooden radio and sing along and with certain sad songs, she would sometimes break into tears as she sang them. She desperately wished she could play piano like her Aunt Gladys, who had the unique ability to hear a piece of music and then go to the keyboard and play it. My mom bought a play-by-the number organ with the black chord buttons, on which she would spend hours playing old tunes from the 40's and newer ones from the 50's. She was always buying me toy guitars, hoping I might become inspired to learn to play music as well.
That finally happened in 1964 and by 1965 I had put together a rock band, initially focusing on playing Beatles songs.
That band would have died a quick death if it had not been for my mother giving up her living room for our rehearsals. No other parent could tolerate having a band with drums, PA system, guitars and guitar amps filling up their living room.
For me, having all the instruments in the house all the time, each day became my personal School Of Rock. I blasted my mom's stereo (while she was at work) and taught myself how to play drums, bass and guitar. I would learn songs during the day and in the evening when the other band members came to rehearse I knew everybody's part.
My mom sat in the dining room and listened and after the band left, she would talk with me about what she liked or didn't like.
My mom and my little sister, Debbie Herbstritt Tautin, would collect coins at the Community Building in Coudersport when we had dances on Friday nights.
No mom could have been more supportive.
The last time I heard my mom sing, was about a month before she passed away. She was in the car with me on our way to see her oncologist, and she began singing, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" one of my all time favorite Jimmy Webb songs. It was a poignant moment for me.

Howard Moore, son of Alice Mae Davey, played trumpet, and I was told he sometimes played in bands with Gladys. I remember Howard playing his trumpet at Hoock's bar and he always played Taps for the Memorial Day ceremony in the Courthouse Square in Coudersport.
