	"Potter BENSON, and his brother Daniel, came to Ceres in 1832. He married Henrietta GILBERT, daughter of Robert and Mary GILBERT. He was a farmer and owned a farm about a mile above town, where his wife still lives with her youngest son. Potter BENSON was a good citizen, honorable in all his dealings, and a truly good man. He left four daughters and one son. One son had died for his country during the rebellion. His oldest daughter is the widow of Justus Rice, of Eldred. She has four children living (pub. 1896). - One of her sons was drowned the past winter, and was brought to Myrtle, making the fifth generation of his mother's people buried there. - The second daughter is the wife of G.W. Lewis, of Vineland, and has eleven children. - The third daughter, Elizabeth, is the wife of Rowland R. Bell. She has eight children; - his son, Brice B., has five, and - the youngest daughter, Harriet, wife of Alvah HALL, of Allegany, has three. Few have left a larger circle of descendants, and if they prove as worthy as they now give fair promise of being, his name will long be honored through them. His wife is now in her eighty-second and shows the infirmities of age."

It was named after Charles K. Landis, the founder of Vineland. Landis Township was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 7, 1864, from portions of Millville, based on the results of a referendum held on March 22, 1864. Portions of the township were taken to form Vineland Borough (May 28, 1880). Other transfers of territory were made to Maurice River Township (1873), to Franklin Township (Gloucester County) (1892, returned in 1897) and from Millville (1934).[7] Landis Township lasted until July 1, 1952, when it was combined with Vineland Borough to form Vineland City, based on the results of a referendum held on February 5, 1952.[7][8][9]

Hall Vineland, NJ Allegany, New York Vineland, N.J. Nov. 15, 1903- My dear Orilla, I have just recovered from the shock your letter gave me. Why didn't you send me word it was coming! I have been thinking of you for some time, wishing I could see you. Why don't you come down? Ruth went up to Lucy's Friday after noon. She wanted me to go with her and Lucy wrote for me to come, too, but as -2- Ruth says, I was too stingy with my money. I am going up during Christmas vacation and that isn't so very far away. I really didn't care to hurry around Friday after noon to get here in time. And then as I told Ruth, Alfred takes my money. To-morrow night we're going down town to a lecture by Gen. Gordon. The subject is, The Last Days of the Confederacy. I know it will be fine. Uncle George, Aunt Mary & Lewis have gone to church. They'll soon be be back, as it -3- is 1.35 and Aunt Mary said for me to have dinner ready by 2.00. I will have to play in Sunday School this afternoon as Ruth isn't here. I have a fine class of little boys. They have just got back from church and dinner is all ready, so good bye for a time. How are the babies? Dorothea must look real cute doddling all around. I bet Papa John -4- is proud of her. How do Uncle Alvah and Aunt Hat feel this fall? Have you had much snow and has it been very cold? We've not had snow but once a little bit of a storm which lasted only two minutes. It snowed just enough to make me home sick. We've not had any cold weather as yet, that is not very cold. Some days have been cool, but not cold. I've had all the windows and doors open in school all the week. I have thirty youngsters -5- right along now and they are quite hard to get along with, too, especially the bigger ones. The work is very hard, too, and I am ready to go home. I had rather teach in York State, even if I wouldn't get as much. Joe got Lewis a little bicycle the other day. He can't ride it yet. Well We've had our dinner and it is nearly time to go to S.S. A?ANOTHER SETTLER CALLED TO RESTA Mrs. Mary LEWIS, One of the Oldest Settlers, Died Yesterday- -ChurchAs Oldest One--In the death of Mrs. Mary BENSON LEWIS, widow of the late G. W. LEWIS , Vineland lost one of the earliest settlers and the First Baptist Church its oldest living m ember. Mrs. LEWIS ahd been in failing health for some time and the end was expected for the p ast few weeks, occurring at four oAclock yesterday afternoon at her home, 230 Landis Avenue.
Mrs. LEWIS was born in Potter County, Pennsylvania, on February 23, 1841 and moved with her h usband to Vineland in 1866, having purchased a farm at West Avenue and Wheat Road where the y brought up a family of eleven children and where Mr. LEWIS died in 1909. After her husbandA s decease, Mrs. LEWIS moved into town where she resided with her daughter, Miss Ruth LEWIS, a nd was happy in being next door to the home of another daughter, Mrs. Joseph UNSWORTH.
The title of a model mother might well have been given to Mrs. LEWIS and her large family wel l repaid her care. Those who have passed on before her were: Helen, Arthur, Homer and George , while seven survive her in the persons of Robert M., Mrs. Joseph UNSWORTH, Mrs. L. NEWCOM B and Miss Ruth LEWIS, of Vineland; Walter, of Newfield; Herbert of Salem and Howard of Deerf ield. These with thirty-one [corrected in pencil in the clipping to FOUR] grandchildren and t hirteen [corrected in the clipping to FIFTEEN] great-grandchildren mourn the loss of a faithf ul and sympathetic guide and counselor. She was always the childrenAs friend.
The funeral service will be held in the First Baptist Church at 2 P.M. Wednesday and will b e conducted by her pastor, Rev. John C. Brookins.
FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS-LEWIS---In Vineland, N.J. April 5, 1926. Mary, widow of the late Georg e W. LEWIS, age 85 years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral Wednesday, 2 P. M. at the First Baptist Church. Interment Siloam Cemetery.

The Post, Vineland NJ April ? 1926--MRS. MARY LEWIS DEAD, WAS EARLY SETTLER--Mrs. Mary Benso n LEWIS, one of VinelandAs earliest settlers, died Monday at her home, 230 Landis Ave. afte r having reached the ripe old age of 85 years. She was the oldest living member of the Firs t Baptist Church. The deceased was the widow of George W. LEWIS, who came here in 1866 and se ttled on a farm at West ave. and Wheat Rd. Mr. LEWIS died in 1909.
Mr. and Mrs. LEWIS were the parents of 11 children, seven of whom survive. They are Mrs. Jose ph UNSWORTH, Mrs. L.B. NEWCOMB, Robert M. and Miss Ruth LEWIS, of this place; Walter LEWIS o f Newfield; Herbert, of Salem, and Howard, of Deerfield. She will also be mourned by 21 grand children and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. John C. Brookins, Wednesday afternoon, at the Fir st Baptist Church. Interment was in Siloam Cemetery.

LEWIS BURIED--Funeral Services for Late Vineland Pioneer Held Yesterday-- The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary BENSON LEWIS, whose death occurred April 5, was held yester day afternoon in the FIrst Baptist Church, REv. J. C. Brookins, the pastor, officiating. A la rge number of friends of the deceased were present. Helen LEWIS, a grandchild, played the org an and Lewis UNSWORTH, another grandchild, played the violin.
The pallbearers were all grandchildren, namely, Robert LEWIS, JR; George W. LEWIS, JR, of Mt . Holly; Frank LEWIS of Fairton; Eugene LEWIS, Deerfield; Robert LEWIS, son of Herbert LEWIS , of Salem, and Sidney UNSWORTH. Herbert LEWIS, a son, former hardware merchant here, was ove r from Salem, and John, a son of the late Homer LEWIS, in the hardware business here before h is death, was here with his daughter. Byron BRAND, a cousin of Mrs. UNSWORTH, and Lewis BRAN D and wife, relatives were also here. There were a large number of grandchildren and they, wi th the children and close relatives numbered about forty at the funeral. The gift of flower s showed special respect for this pioneer who was one of the very early members of the Baptis t Church.

Mary Benson Lewis is the daughter of Potter Benson and Henrietta Gilbert Benson.

"Potter BENSON, and his brother Daniel, came to Ceres in 1832.
He married Henrietta GILBERT, daughter of Robert and Mary GILBERT.
He was a farmer and owned a farm about a mile above town, where his wife still lives with her youngest son.
Potter BENSON was a good citizen, honorable in all his dealings, and a truly good man.
He left four daughters and one son.
One son had died for his country during the rebellion.
His oldest daughter is the widow of Justus Rice, of Eldred. She has four children living (pub. 1896).
One of her sons was drowned the past winter, and was brought to Myrtle, making the fifth generation of his mother's people buried there.
The second daughter is the wife of G.W. Lewis, of Vineland, and has eleven children.
The third daughter, Elizabeth, is the wife of Rowland R. Bell. She has eight children; his son, Brice B., has five,
and the youngest daughter, Harriet, wife of Alvah HALL, of Allegany, has three.
Few have left a larger circle of descendants, and if they prove as worthy as they now give fair promise of being, his name will long be honored through them.
His wife is now in her eighty-second and shows the infirmities of age."

I have just recovered from the shock your letter gave me. Why didn't you send me word it was coming! I have been thinking of you for some time, wishing I could see you. Why don't you come down? Ruth went up to Lucy's Friday after noon. She wanted me to go with her and Lucy wrote for me to come, too, but as

Ruth says, I was too stingy with my money. I am going up during Christmas vacation and that isn't so very far away. I really didn't care to hurry around Friday after noon to get here in time. And then as I told Ruth, Alfred takes my money. To-morrow night we're going down town to a lecture by Gen. Gordon. The subject is, The Last Days of the Confederacy. I know it will be fine. Uncle George, Aunt Mary & Lewis have gone to church. They'll soon be be back, as it

is 1.35 and Aunt Mary said for me to have dinner ready by 2.00. I will have to play in Sunday School this afternoon as Ruth isn't here. I have a fine class of little boys.
They have just got back from church and dinner is all ready, so good bye for a time.

How do Uncle Alvah and Aunt Hat feel this fall? Have you had much snow and has it been very cold? We've not had snow but once a little bit of a storm which lasted only two minutes. It snowed just enough to make me home sick. We've not had any cold weather as yet, that is not very cold. Some days have been cool, but not cold. I've had all the windows and doors open in school all the week.
I have thirty youngsters

right along now and they are quite hard to get along with, too, especially the bigger ones.
The work is very hard, too, and I am ready to go home. I had rather teach in York State, even if I wouldn't get as much. Joe got Lewis a little bicycle the other day. He can't ride it yet.
Well We've had our dinner and it is nearly time to go to S.S. I must comb my hair and put a ribbon around my neck.

Levi has gone and left us. He went back to Virginia where he worked last winter. Ruth can't be comforted. Walter is a great one he is always writing some thing funney(sic). There is a fellow here they call Penny Dodge, another one by the name of Gale. Once Walter wrote to

Landis Township was a township that existed in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States from 1864 to 1952. It was named after Charles K. Landis, the founder of Vineland.

Landis Township was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 7, 1864, from portions of Millville, based on the results of a referendum held on March 22, 1864. Portions of the township were taken to form Vineland Borough (May 28, 1880). Other transfers of territory were made to Maurice River Township (1873), to Franklin Township (Gloucester County) (1892, returned in 1897) and from Millville (1934).[7]

Landis Township lasted until July 1, 1952, when it was combined with Vineland Borough to form Vineland City, based on the results of a referendum held on February 5, 1952.[7][8][9]
