The Pilgrim Fathers - The Mayflower and Speedwell in Southampton in 1620
FB ·
1629. The Higginson Fleet : The ships.
The six ships in the Higginson fleet were:
1. The Pilgrim, a small ship with 4 guns, that carried supplies only; William Woolrige master.
This ship sailed back in August, but “was seized off Canada by Captain Daniell of Dieppe, who stripped her of her lading. On 31 October 1629 as she was returning to England, she ran into foul weather off the Scilly Isles, and her masts and sails were cut down to save her.” The number of passengers on the Pilgrim is not mentioned.
2.The Lyon's Whelp, which carried 40 planters + crew + 8 cannon. John Gibbs, master.
The Rev. Francis Bright (1602-?) was a passenger. Married with two children at the time of agreement with Massachusetts Bay Company, 2 February 1628/9. A Minister from Rayleigh, Essex, first settled in Salem; moved to Charlestown in 1629. Returned to England to stay in 1630.
These two ships left from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, 11 May 1629, and arrived in Salem Harbor 29 June 1629.
3. The Talbot, which carried 19 cannon; Thomas Beecher, master.
The Rev. Francis Higginson, which this fleet is named after, was one of the passengers. Francis Higginson (1586- 1630) m. Anne Herbert (1583-1640) 8 January 1615 in St. Peters Church, Nottingham, Kent, England. 10 children.
4. The George Bonaventure, which carried 20 cannon; Thomas Cox, master. She left the Isle of Wight 4 May 1629, and probably reached Salem during the first half of July.
Two passengers are mentioned on one site.
Samuel Sharp (1593 -1656) m. Alice Stileman (1605-1667) 4 Apr 1629. 7 children
Rev. Samuel Skelton (before 1593 -1634) the first pastor of the First Church of Salem, Massachusetts, which is the original Puritan church in North America; m. Susanna Travis (1597-1631) 27 Apr 1619 in Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England. 7 children.
5. The Four Sisters, which carried 14 cannon, Roger Harman, master.
She carried “many cattle with passengers & provision.” The only information on passengers I found is:
Walter Palmer (b. about 1589 d. 1661) m. by about 1614 to Unknown. Walter arrived in Salem, Massachusetts in June 1629, and settled in Charlestown Massachusetts with his five children, and Abraham Palmer, possibly his brother. Walter was married for a second time to Rebecca Short (1610-1671) 1 Jun 1633 in Roxbury, Mass. 8 children
6. The Mayflower, which carried 14 guns; NOT the same ship that came to Plymouth in 1620.
Some 35 passengers, family and friends who had remained in Leiden sailed on this Mayflower. They left Holland in May, and arrived in Plymouth Colony in August.
More info on where to find additional information on passengers in the next posting.
Some sites name the picture as the Higginson fleet, others as the Winthrop fleet. The model is the Lyons Whelp.
