Sweden Valley Family Escapes Injuries When Home Falls Into Cellar

SWEDEN VALLEY -- A family of eight was tumbled from its beds early Sunday morning, when the R.E. Weimer house collapsed into a newly excavated cellar.
The family escaped injury, except homeowner Weimer's mother, who sustained what was called a minor shoulder hurt.
The frame dwelling, located at the corner of Rt.6 and Brookland Rd. here, virtually broke intwo when it crashed into the eight-foot excavation, at about 3:30 a.m.
Danger of fire breaking out when natural gas lines snapped was averted by the Coudersport volunteer fire department. Fire Chief John V. Mayers, with 12 volunteers, stood by until North Penn Gas Co. trouble shooters arrived.
Cause of the near-tragedy was given as a failure of supports that had proppped the dwelling up while cellar digging went on.
Excavation was started Friday by local contractor Don Kelly, and was suspended at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Adding to the loss was the fact that the house -- which had jack-knifed in the fall -- had been newly roofed with shingles Friday.
Occupants in addition to Mr and Mrs. Weimer and Mr. Weimer's mother were five Weimer children. They were teen-agers:
- Gladys
- Elaine
- George and
- Elno,
and Gary, about 11 years of age.

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Thielges, R. D.1, Roulette, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Joanne Louise, to Gary Weimer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elno Weimer, Sweden Valley. The bride-to-be is a 1966 graduate of Port Allegany High School and is employed at Sylvania, Emporium. Mr. Weimer was graduated from Coudersport Area' High School in 1964 and is serving in the United States Army.
A September wedding is planned.
