Thank you for your email re. Spring family of Bedfordshire. I didn t immediately find any connections – no Thomas of Goldington c1756 or wife Sarah Bird, unfortunately, although I have 17 Thomas Springs in my records! I then looked for John (27 of those) born c1810 who married a Harriet, and was more successful. The information I have is as follows: John son of James SPRING & Lovey (CHERRY), bp. 17 Oct 1810 Wilshamstead, Beds. [Source: 1988 IGI] 1851 Census HO107/1754/181 p. 42: living at How End, Houghton Conquest, Beds. John SPRING, head, marr. 40, farmer of 41 acres employing 4 men, b. Wilshamstead, Beds., wife Harriet, 37, b. Cardington, Beds., sons James 13, scholar, b. Houghton & John 7, b. Bedford. [Wilshamstead, incidentally, is pronounced locally as Wilsted, I am told.] Wife Harriet died little more than a year later - 2 Jun 1852. When admon. was granted on 7 Nov 1876 (24 years later), John was "of Belmont Allegany County, New York, U.S.A., lace dealer". Estate under £600. [Source: Calendar of Wills] 1853 Craven & Co.'s Beds. Directory: Houghton Conquest. John SPRING farmer. John was the third of five children, his siblings being Hannah, Eliza, Amy and Lovey. John s children were James, John and Lovey Cherry. Does any of this fit in with your research? If so, I can give you a little more information re. baptismal dates etc. I shall be away from home for the next week but on my return will be happy to exchange any other information.

Glad we?re on the same wavelength! Unfortunately, I haven?t been able to find a direct connection between the line of Springs I am researching and the individuals you have mentioned so far, but we may find one eventually.
According to my research, James was born c1778 at Shillington, Beds. I have no knowledge of his parents. He was married 5 Aug 1803 at Houghton Conquest, Beds. to Lovey CHERRY [Source: IGI]
A James SPRING was the owner of 6 parcels of land in Houghton Conquest, totalling 41acres 27 perch, occupied by Titus CHERRY in 1845. Tithe payable to the Rector in 1845 was £13 13s. [Source: AT/24 Tithe Apportionment 1845 and MAT/24 map - Beds. Record Office] This was probably the same James. Was Titus the father of Lovey?
1851 Census HO107/1752 fol. 179 p.42: Wilshamstead, Beds.
James SPRING, head, widower 73, farmer of 729 acres employing 4 men & 8 boys, b. Shillington, Beds., Eliza PULLEY servant, unmarried 22, house servant, b. Wilstead, Beds., Emma PULLEY, lodger 13, lace maker. b. Wilstead, Samuel CHENEY, servant, unmarried 20, horse keeper, b. Wilstead, Beds.
1854 Beds. Post Office Directory: Wilsted. James SPRING farmer.
1864 Post Office Directory: not listed, possibly indicating James has died by this date.
I have no information on James?s wife, Lovey CHERRY. However, on her notes I have recorded: A Lovey SPRING was born to a William and Huldah SPRING on 31 Aug 1803 [less than a month after James and Lovey's marriage] at Rockport, Knox, Maine, USA. [Source: www.familysearch.org - IGI] Coincidence? Could William have been related to James and known Lovey CHERRY, naming his own child after her?
James & Lovey?s children were:
Hannah bp. 7 April 1807 Houghton Conquest, Beds.
Eliza bp. 29 Nov 1808 Wilshamstead, Beds.
John bp. 17 Oct 1810 Wilshamstead
Lovey b. 22 Aug 1814, bp.

I was glad I didn't have to figure that out today. 2) I didn't see a record of the other 2 children of James Spring and Lovey Cherry (Hannah and Lovey) mentioned by Mrs. Blosse. Both of those names would certainly make sense for the couple: One child named after her mother and one after her. 3) We hoped that James Spring would match up with the record I talked about earlier. Note that the 'about' birth date (1778) in the marriage record is slightly different from the baptism registry of James as the son of Thomas and Sarah. (That was 1784) 4) I don't know if Villata de Bedeford is the name of the church or if it means "village of Bedfordshire" or what? Do one of you know? Doesn't matter. Just curious. I have an original copy of John Spring's 1901 obituary giving his age; it fits. Bob Spring has a copy of his death certificate listing his parents' names. Who could have made the name Lovey Cherry up? And all the information I found today fits. Bobby, I think that you had another reference, as well. I don't know what more evidence we need than what we already have. Are you satisfied that we are on the right track?
