	OBITUARY: From Dorothy Smith Collection: DEATH OF OTIS WEIMER Funeral of Pioneer Sartwell Creek, Farmer, Was Held Sunday Afternoon - On Friday, September 2, 1927, at the home of his son Ray at Burtville, occurred the death of Otis Weimer, one of the oldest pioneer settlers of the county, at the age of eighty years. Death was due to intestinal flu and old age. Funeral services were held at the Sartwell Creek Church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. E. J. Burton officiating and the remains were laid to rest in the family plot in the Sartwell Creek Cemetery. The IOOF Lodge of Roulette conducted the services at the grave. Otis Weimer was the son of George and Laura (Lyman) Weimer and was born at Williston, Potter County on March 14, 1847. His father, George Weimer, came from Germany in 1830 when only a boy of 13 and located in Potter County. George Weimer married Laura Lyman, the daughter of Burrel Lyman of Roulette. To this union ten children were born of which only three survive, Roscoe Weimer and Mrs. Mary Robinson of Port Allegany, and Mrs. Nettie Yentzer of Roulette. Other brothers and sisters who preceded Otis Weimer in death were Sarah Stearns, Willis Weimer, Ella Stearns, Lottie Rice, Nellie Palmer, and May Etta. When Otis Weimer was a boy, he was very ambitious and at the age of twenty, with his father and brother Willie, made their last trip on a raft of lumber down the river to Warren, PA. As they were in a hurry to get back for the spring work on the farm on Sartwell Creek, they took a horse along. They would take turns riding the horse back. Hitching him for the others to catch up. By so doing they could reach home much quicker. In 1870 he married Hulda Jane Johnson of Roulette, PA. To this union six children were born: George of Elmira NY, Major of Cyclone PA, Elvin of Roulette, Willis of Port Allegany, and Stephen who died at the age of eight years. In 1889, Otis moved in with his father at their farm home and cared for him until 1904 when he passed away. He kept the farm going until 1918, when his wife's health failed. At that time his son Ray left his farm and with his wife tenderly gave her the best of care until she died in 1822 [typo: sb 1922] Since that time Otis Weimer made his home with his son on the old homestead up to 1925, when the farm was sold and they moved to Burtville, where his death occurred. In his prime of life Otis Weimer was a staunch worker and one of the trustees of the Sartwell Creek Church, an office he held from the time the church was built until he died. Mr. Weimer was in the best of health, doing work up to the time of his last sickness. He was only in bed three weeks and took an interest in politics and the affairs of the neighborhood even during his last few days alive. When death overtook him, he closed his eyes saying, "Come on come on, I'm waiting." During his illness hegave very little trouble and was given the best care that loving hands could give. He counted his friends by the score and will be greatly missed by the entire community.

	Historical Sketches of Potter County: In 1830, several families came from Havre (LaHavre?), France, to this new world. They were George and Eva (Weiderich) Weimer, Jacob and Sally (Der) Weiderich, Christian and Margaret (Weiderich) Schadenberger and his parents, Balthasard and Elizabeth (Kaufman) Schadenberger, and another Weiderich brother who went to Canada. The captain of the ship on which they sailed took them almost to New Orleans where he intended to sell them as slaves. They were about to throw him overboard when he promised to return them to Philadelphia. There they bought teams of horses and oxen and started for Potter County. After a few days on Ayers Hill with the Joshua Jacksons, the Weimers and Weiderichs came down the Allegheny and found a site where Fishing Creek joined the river. George Weimer was a baker by trade and had baked bread in Napoleon's army. His property extended from the Pomeroy Bridge (Roulette) east to where the Baptist Church is today. They suffered many privations- for their coffee, they dried raspberry leaves and for saleratus (soda) they burned powdered corn. George had five sons (three in the Civil War, Michael, Martin, and John) George W. married Laura Lyman and Otis became a great lumberman and often sailed rafts down the Allegheny. _______________

	paintedhills: GEORGE WEIMER, farmer, P.O. Williston, son of George and Margaret (Lehman) Weimer, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), November 27, 1816. In 1830 he came to America with his parents, who located at Roulette, Potter county, where they engaged in farming and spent the rest of their lives; their children were George and Eve. His father' s second wife was Eve Wiederich, and their children were Michael, Barbara, Mrs. Margaret Manning, Mrs. Sally Jackson, William A., Frederick, John and Mrs. Dorcas Marsh. The subject of these lines made his home with his parents until nineteen years of age, when he began to work for farmers, and in 1836 bought a tract of wild land on which he located in 1842. This he cleared and improved, and now has one of the best farms in Pleasant Valley township. He was married in 1842, to Laura, daughter of Burrel Lyman. Their children are Sarah (Mrs. Roscoe Stearns), Otis, Willis, Ella (Mrs. Dr. Stearns, of Port Allegany, Penn.), Mary (Mrs. F. Robinson, of Liberty township, McKean county), Nellie (Mrs. Amos Palmer, also of Liberty township), Nettie (Mrs. Lewis Yentzer, of Roulette, Penn.), Lottie (Mrs. Miles Rice, also of Roulette), and Roscoe. Mrs. Weimer died in 1884. In politics Mr. Weimer is a Democrat. In 1836 he bought corn at $3 per bushel, which was brought on pack horses eighty miles from Jersey Shore, and paid for it in cutting wood at seventy-five cents per day.

obituary, The Potter County Journal:
"In 1889 Otis moved in with his father at his farm home and cared for him until his death in 1904. He kept the farm going until 1918 when his wife's health failed. At that time his son, Ray, left his farm and with his wife tenderly gave her the best of care. She died April 10, 1922. Since that time Otis Weimer made his home on the old homestead up to June 15, 1925 when the farm was sold and they moved to Burtville where his death occurred September 2, 1927."

Historical Sketches of Potter County: In 1830, several families came from Havre (LaHavre?), France, to this new world. They were George and Eva (Weiderich) Weimer, Jacob and Sally (Der) Weiderich, Christian and Margaret (Weiderich) Schadenberger and his parents, Balthasard and Elizabeth (Kaufman) Schadenberger, and another Weiderich brother who went to Canada.

The captain of the ship on which they sailed took them almost to New Orleans where he intended to sell them as slaves. They were about to throw him overboard when he promised to return them to Philadelphia. There they bought teams of horses and oxen and started for Potter County. After a few days on Ayers Hill with the Joshua Jacksons, the Weimers and Weiderichs came down the Allegheny and found a site where Fishing Creek joined the river.

George Weimer was a baker by trade and had baked bread in Napoleon's army. His property extended from the Pomeroy Bridge (Roulette) east to where the Baptist Church is today. They suffered many privations- for their coffee, they dried raspberry leaves and for saleratus (soda) they burned powdered corn. George had five sons (three in the Civil War, Michael, Martin, and John)
George W. married Laura Lyman and Otis became a great lumberman and often sailed rafts down the Allegheny.

In 1830 he came to America with his parents, who located at Roulette, Potter County, where they engaged in farming and spent the rest of their lives;

In 1836, he bought corn at $3 per bushel, which was brought on pack horses 80 miles from Jersey Shore, and paid for it in cutting wood at $0.75 per day.

50. MAJOR WEIMER was born in Pleasant Valley Township, Potter County, July 23, 1872, the son of Otis and Huldih Jane (Johnson) Weimer. His grandfather was one of the early settlers of Potter County. Mr. Weimer received his early education in the public schools. He was a lumberman for several years and was also connected with the tannery business. He is now associated with the Pittsburgh Corning Glass Company. Mr. Weimer is a member of Eulalia Lodge Number 342 F.&A.M., Coudersport Chapter Number 263, Coudersport Consistory, having been in the first class when it was organized in Coudersport in 1899. He married, February 16, 1897, Virginia D. Rossman of Sweden Hill. She is a member of the Baptist Church. They have four children: Geneva (Weimer) Grandin of Roulette; Naomi (Weimer) McLatchie of Coudersport; Dema (Wiemer) Burt of Cyclone; and Florence (Weimer) Gallup of Port Allegany. Mr. Weimer's hobbies are hunting and fishing.

Biography George Weimar

GEORGE WEIMAR, farmer, P.O. Williston, son of George and Margaret (Lehman) Weimar, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), November 27, 1816.
In 1830 he came to America with his parents, who located at Roulette, Potter county, where they engaged in farming and spent the rest of their lives; their children were

A Famous Woodsman Dead

George Weimer Walked 70 Miles In the Forest in a Day-Ran Down a Deer..
ROULETTE, Pa., March 6.-George Weimer,. aged 90, died last Monday on his farm near this place, where he had lived for seventy years. He was the last of the pioneer woodsmen and raftsmen of the Allegheny and Susquehanna headwaters, and was famous as a pedestrian and runner in his early days. Once, being on a rafting trip down the river, he walked from Jersey Shore to Roulette, 70 miles, between breakfast and early bedtime, or in about IT hours, over a rough and hilly wilderness road, with a stop of only an hour for rest and refreshment during the entire journey. The reason he made it, he always explained by saying:
"I had always called on my girl that right of the week, and I wasn't going to let a little matter of 70 miles fool me out of it that night." The girl he travelled too far to see was the daughter of Burrill Lyman of Roulette, and she soon afterward became his wife.

Laroy Lyman of Roulette shot at a deer in the hills back of that place one day, and called on Weimer to fetch one of his dogs. The dog would not follow the deer's track, and Weimer himself took after the HAM*. When Weimer started the dog took the track and went ahead and overtook the deer, a buck. The deer fought the dog and scared it eo that when Weimer came up it would only keep at its heels, the deer having started on again. Weimer followed the deer over ridges, down hollows, across streams and through swamps and tangled thickets, giving it no rest, and at last drove it into the open and toward the Allegheny River. The deer at last entered a field that lay between the woods and the river. There Weimer caught it. Lyman's shot' had not hit it. The dog came lagging and panting in a few minutes afterward and lay down in a fence corner, tired out.. Weimer cut the deer's throat and carried the carcass nearly a mile t o a farmhouse. He had run the deer, as near as could be calculated b y t h e turnings and twistings of the course, not lees than 11 miles. Leaving the deer at the farm t o be called for, he over the hills, 7 miles. He arrived there an hour ahead of his dog.
Weimer, when he married and settled on the farm, worked in the woods or on the river in the winter. When he rafted down the Susquehanna the rafts were, as a rule, run to Columbia, about 200 miles. The return trip could be made by stage and canal, but Weimer always walked it, thus, he declared, saving both time and money.

A Famous Woodsman Dead

George Weimer Walked 70 Miles In the Forest in a Day-Ran Down a Deer..
ROULETTE, Pa., March 6.-George Weimer,. aged 90, died last Monday on his farm near this place, where he had lived for seventy years. He was the last of the pioneer woodsmen and raftsmen of the Allegheny and Susquehanna headwaters, and was famous as a pedestrian and runner in his early days. Once, being on a rafting trip down the river, he walked from Jersey Shore to Roulette, 70 miles, between breakfast and early bedtime, or in about IT hours, over a rough and hilly wilderness road, with a stop of only an hour for rest and refreshment during the entire journey. The reason he made it, he always explained by saying:
"I had always called on my girl that right of the week, and I wasn't going to let a little matter of 70 miles fool me out of it that night." The girl he travelled too far to see was the daughter of Burrill Lyman of Roulette, and she soon afterward became his wife.

Laroy Lyman of Roulette shot at a deer in the hills back of that place one day, and called on Weimer to fetch one of his dogs. The dog would not follow the deer's track, and Weimer himself took after the HAM*. When Weimer started the dog took the track and went ahead and overtook the deer, a buck. The deer fought the dog and scared it eo that when Weimer came up it would only keep at its heels, the deer having started on again. Weimer followed the deer over ridges, down hollows, across streams and through swamps and tangled thickets, giving it no rest, and at last drove it into the open and toward the Allegheny River. The deer at last entered a field that lay between the woods and the river. There Weimer caught it. Lyman's shot' had not hit it. The dog came lagging and panting in a few minutes afterward and lay down in a fence corner, tired out.. Weimer cut the deer's throat and carried the carcass nearly a mile t o a farmhouse. He had run the deer, as near as could be calculated b y t h e turnings and twistings of the course, not lees than 11 miles. Leaving the deer at the farm t o be called for, he over the hills, 7 miles. He arrived there an hour ahead of his dog.
Weimer, when he married and settled on the farm, worked in the woods or on the river in the winter. When he rafted down the Susquehanna the rafts were, as a rule, run to Columbia, about 200 miles. The return trip could be made by stage and canal, but Weimer always walked it, thus, he declared, saving both time and money.
