John,
I'm trying to answer your messages one at a time, to avoid my getting confused. (That may happen all too easily). I received two messages from Bobby also, which was nice. Thank you! I have been forwarding your messages to Charlotte Harris (Rex Spring's granddaughter, as I believe I mentioned before), so don't be surprised if you hear from Charlotte.
My grandmother was born 26 Oct 1867 in New York City ( I always heard it was at Ellis Island). My grandfather was born 8 Jan 1869 in England. My grandfather was known as Nathan Saunders; I believe I picked up the other names for him from a copy of a birth certificate I sent to England for ~ 35 years ago. He and Agnes Clara Spring had 3 children.
Briefly:
1) Clara Agnes (yes, that name again) Wakefield - born 5 May 1901 (one child)
2) Stanley Spring Saunders - born 1 July 1904 (5 living children)
*3) Harriet Saunders Garden - born 25 Jan 1907
I am one of Harriet Garden's 3 children. I went back to my maiden name a few years ago. (How confusing is that!) My parents met when my mother was teaching high school art in Niagara Falls and my father was a young army officer. They were married 15 Oct 1937.
My Aunt Clara died (of cancer) shortly after we went to Germany in Feb 1950. I have the date of her death as 16 Apr 1950. I don't remember exactly when Stanley died, but one of these days I'll look it up. My mother died in Salinas, Monterey County, California - 23 Feb 1997. They were all very close.
I'll fill in more information about Stanley's children another time. The three youngest live in Florida, the oldest (Hiram) is in Texas and Marilyn lives in the Virgin Islands. Clara's son is Irving Wakefield, who I'm quite certain still lives in the Alfred-Almond area.
In answer to a previous question, my grandmother died 12 Dec 1962 in Hornell, Steuben (?) County and was buried in Alfred 16 Dec 1962. My grandfather died in Hornell 26 June 1947 and was also buried in Alfred 28 June 1947. I wasn't very old at the time, but I remember that; he always seemed like such a kind, quiet man. If I remember correctly my grandparents gravestones have the birth dates switched, which is something my grandmother did, since she was of the opinion that the man should be older than his wife.
There's more, as always, so until later. . . .Carol
