Thank you for your email re. Spring family of Bedfordshire. I didn t immediately find any connections – no Thomas of Goldington c1756 or wife Sarah Bird, unfortunately, although I have 17 Thomas Springs in my records! I then looked for John (27 of those) born c1810 who married a Harriet, and was more successful. The information I have is as follows: John son of James SPRING & Lovey (CHERRY), bp. 17 Oct 1810 Wilshamstead, Beds. [Source: 1988 IGI] 1851 Census HO107/1754/181 p. 42: living at How End, Houghton Conquest, Beds. John SPRING, head, marr. 40, farmer of 41 acres employing 4 men, b. Wilshamstead, Beds., wife Harriet, 37, b. Cardington, Beds., sons James 13, scholar, b. Houghton & John 7, b. Bedford. [Wilshamstead, incidentally, is pronounced locally as Wilsted, I am told.] Wife Harriet died little more than a year later - 2 Jun 1852. When admon. was granted on 7 Nov 1876 (24 years later), John was "of Belmont Allegany County, New York, U.S.A., lace dealer". Estate under £600. [Source: Calendar of Wills] 1853 Craven & Co.'s Beds. Directory: Houghton Conquest. John SPRING farmer. John was the third of five children, his siblings being Hannah, Eliza, Amy and Lovey. John s children were James, John and Lovey Cherry. Does any of this fit in with your research? If so, I can give you a little more information re. baptismal dates etc. I shall be away from home for the next week but on my return will be happy to exchange any other information.

Glad we?re on the same wavelength! Unfortunately, I haven?t been able to find a direct connection between the line of Springs I am researching and the individuals you have mentioned so far, but we may find one eventually.
According to my research, James was born c1778 at Shillington, Beds. I have no knowledge of his parents. He was married 5 Aug 1803 at Houghton Conquest, Beds. to Lovey CHERRY [Source: IGI]
A James SPRING was the owner of 6 parcels of land in Houghton Conquest, totalling 41acres 27 perch, occupied by Titus CHERRY in 1845. Tithe payable to the Rector in 1845 was £13 13s. [Source: AT/24 Tithe Apportionment 1845 and MAT/24 map - Beds. Record Office] This was probably the same James. Was Titus the father of Lovey?
1851 Census HO107/1752 fol. 179 p.42: Wilshamstead, Beds.
James SPRING, head, widower 73, farmer of 729 acres employing 4 men & 8 boys, b. Shillington, Beds., Eliza PULLEY servant, unmarried 22, house servant, b. Wilstead, Beds., Emma PULLEY, lodger 13, lace maker. b. Wilstead, Samuel CHENEY, servant, unmarried 20, horse keeper, b. Wilstead, Beds.
1854 Beds. Post Office Directory: Wilsted. James SPRING farmer.
1864 Post Office Directory: not listed, possibly indicating James has died by this date.
I have no information on James?s wife, Lovey CHERRY. However, on her notes I have recorded: A Lovey SPRING was born to a William and Huldah SPRING on 31 Aug 1803 [less than a month after James and Lovey's marriage] at Rockport, Knox, Maine, USA. [Source: www.familysearch.org - IGI] Coincidence? Could William have been related to James and known Lovey CHERRY, naming his own child after her?
James & Lovey?s children were:
Hannah bp. 7 April 1807 Houghton Conquest, Beds.
Eliza bp. 29 Nov 1808 Wilshamstead, Beds.
John bp. 17 Oct 1810 Wilshamstead
Lovey b. 22 Aug 1814, bp.

Carol, I think this works. This means that John (b. 1810) is the son of James (b. 1784), not the son of John, who, as you ve pointed out, died in infancy anyway. Have you been able to find any corroborating evidence, rather than the process of elimination? I do feel we re on to something. Thank you for your help. I m going to make this tentative change, anyway, and reference this correspondence. Anything more on the family, like Lovey Cherry and her family? That makes her, and her ancestors, our ancestors too!! john

He said Tody had told him that John Spring (born in 1810) and Harriet White had had 9 children. After her death, he married Sarah; he was 43 and the time and Sarah was 22 years old. His children by Harriet White were so angry about the marriage that most were never heard of again. He mentioned the two who went to Australia; he also thought that two of them had gone to Africa as missionaries. John and Sarah Spring also had 9 children. I had never heard about so many children, and I must ask Charlotte Harris and Tody about it. His Uncle Herbert, he said, had a chicken farm. His recollection was that Herbert had two sons, both ministers.

I have no record of John s marriage to Harriet, and the information concerning their children James and John I have gleaned from the 1851 census. Their third child, Lovey Cherry SPRING, I discovered on the IGI at www.familysearch.org bp. 22 May 1852 at Houghton Conquest. This is the sum total of my information concerning this family. I would love to know whether they link in with any of my other Spring families. My husband Philip is the one with Spring relatives – his mother was a Spring before marriage – and I have traced their line back to a Solomon Spring (7 x great-grandfather) who was buried 21 Oct 1669 in Maulden. Subsequent generations lived in Millbrook, Ampthill and Westoning, all in Bedfordshire, before moving south to London. I hope this is of some help. I would be very pleased to hear more about your ancestors in case we can find a link between the two families. I have a huge amount of information on my particular line and if I can help in any way I will be only too pleased to do so. Good luck and keep in touch. Valerie

Subject: Family of John Spring (born 1810)
Dear John and Bobby,
There is a lot more I wanted to do on this, but it's about time I sent something to you. I was just looking at a family group sheet of John Spring (who was born in 1810). Some of the information was given to me years ago by the Bob Spring in Washington State. Information given by him seems to be fairly consistent with an 1870 census record completed in Angelica, Allegany County, NY. Series M593, Roll 904, Pg. 429. Have you seen that census record? Here's information on that family group sheet:
John Spring. Born: 11 Aug 1810 in England.
Died: 20 Nov 1901 in Jamestown, NY. Buried in Wellsville.
Father: John Spring.
Wife: Harriet White. Born about 1815. Married 1836 in England.
Died 2 June 1852 in Bedfordshire, England.
Father: Thomas White.
Mother: Susanna.
2nd Wife: Sarah Vincent.
Children:
James Spring. Born: 21 May 1837.
John Spring. Born 12 Aug 1843 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England. Died 26 May 1925 in Alfred, NY. Married 4 Jan 1867 to Clara Agnes Mays.
Lily Vincent Spring. Born Abt 1853. Died 15 Nov 1915 in Jamestown, NY. Unmarried.
Harriet Spring. Died Abt 1900. Unmarried.
Charles Spring. Born Abt 1858.
Harry Spring. Born Abt 1859.
Ella Gertrude Spring. Born: Abt 1864. Died 22 Feb 1891 in Jamestown, NY. Unmarried
Questions/Comments:
1) Who was the Washington Bob Spring? I must have the information somewhere. If not, I would think Rex Spring's daughter, Harriet (Tody) could tell us. It seems probable that he was a son of Stanley Harold Spring the youngest (10th) child of John and Clara Agnes Spring.
2) On the census record of 1870, Sarah Vincent was listed as the 'keeper of house" and was 25 years younger than John Spring. Wonder when they were married; we should be able to find a marriage record. Incidentally, he was made the administrator of her estate on 23 Nov 1915, but I do not have the exact date of her death.
3) I remember a story about 2 young men who took off for Australia and were never heard of since. I think one of them was named Harry and maybe the other was Charles.
Does any of what I have here make any sense to either of you? John, I did see John Spring #48 and Harriet White #49 and their two sons on the information you sent to me. Did you get information about births and deaths from birth/death certificates? How did you know when they were married? Did you ever find a marriage certificate for them? What did I miss from what you have sent to me?
It will be interesting to hear your comments. . .Carol

James Spring married Lovey Cherry on 5 Aug 1803 at Houghton Conquest, Bedford, England. James was born abt. 1778 and Lovey abt 1782. (From: Bedfordshire Parish Records 1539 -1812. . .on film) Lovey Cherry was born 5 Apr 1782 and christened 20 Oct 1782 at Houghton Conquest, Bedford, England. Parents: Titus Cherry and Hannah. (From: 1539 - 1812. . .on the same film) Dau Eliza was baptized 29 Nov 1808 at (Villata de Bedeford) Wilstead, Bedfordshire Son John was baptized 17 Oct 1810 at (Villata de Bedeford) Wilstead, Bedfordshire Dau Amy was baptized 13 Oct 1812 at (Villata de Bedeford) Wilstead, Bedfordshire (Baptisms from: Parish Registers of Wilstead, 1593 - 1812) Notes: 1) From a previous message from you John, I learned that Wilshamstead and Wilstead must be synonymous. I was glad I didn't have to figure that out today. 2) I didn't see a record of the other 2 children of James Spring and Lovey Cherry (Hannah and Lovey) mentioned by Mrs. Blosse. Both of those names would certainly make sense for the couple: One child named after her mother and one after her. 3) We hoped that James Spring would match up with the record I talked about earlier. Note that the 'about' birth date (1778) in the marriage record is slightly different from the baptism registry of James as the son of Thomas and Sarah. (That was 1784) 4) I don't know if Villata de Bedeford is the name of the church or if it means "village of Bedfordshire" or what? Do one of you know? Doesn't matter. Just curious. I have an original copy of John Spring's 1901 obituary giving his age; it fits. Bob Spring has a copy of his death certificate listing his parents' names. Who could have made the name Lovey Cherry up? And all the information I found today fits. Bobby, I think that you had another reference, as well. I don't know what more evidence we need than what we already have. Are you satisfied that we are on the right track?
