Mr. and Mrs. Will Patterson.
Relatives and friends from the immediate vicinity and from Canisteo, Hornell, Endicott, Ulysses and Coudersport, attended in "open house" Sunday for Mr. and Mrs. Will Patterson, of Bingham Center, on their 40th wedding anniversary.
Married in Endicott, N. Y., on Oct. 10, 1919, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson have lived in their present home throughout their married life. Mrs. Patterson is the former Miss Mary Thompson.
In charge of the surprise affair were the Pattersons' children, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Harvey, Mr. and Mrs. William Buckley, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Buckley and Mr. and Mrs. Clair Patterson.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Thompson entertained at dinner prior to the open house for the Pattersons. Present were:
Mrs. Alice Hill, Mrs. Hyla Fries, Miss Herba Jean Youngs, Sheryl Collins, David Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Nick Gafario and four daughters, all of Endicott, N. Y., and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Carey and children, Coudersport.
West Bingham Man Dies Of Injuries Received in Fall
Emery A. Shutt, 67, Dies From Injury of Broken Back, Head and Internal Injuries Life Long Resident of West Bingham.
The death of Emery A. Shutt, West Bingham, occurred at the Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, Sunday. It came as the result of serious injuries sustained in a fall about 11:00 o'clock, Friday morning.
The unfortunate man, a retired employe of the Worthington Corooration at Wellsville, had been making repairs at his family home. He was taken by Kear ambulance from Ulysses to the hospital in Wellsville. His injuries were reported as broken back, head and internal.
Mr Shutt, aged 67 years, had operated a sawmill for a long time and in later years was a crane operator until retired.
Surviving are his wife, Eva Smith Shutt; a son, Carson of Genesee; two step-sons, Charles Dunham of Genesee and Rex Dunham of Wellsville, R. D.1; five Mrs. Mabel Pritchard of Whitesville; Mrs. Rose Hann; Mrs. Esther Hackett; Genesee; and and Miss Mrs. Dora Doris Shutt, Almon all of Madera, Calif.; two brothers: Roy Shutt of Independence and Clyde Shutt of Genesee, and four grandchildren.
Friend's called at the Lloyd W. Kear Funeral Home in Ulysses. Funeral is being held from the West Bingham Community Church at 2:00 o'clock this (Wednesday) afternoon. The Rev. Robert Shannon is officiating assisted by the Rev. Edwin Van Duff of Wellsville. Interment is to be in Rural Cemetery at Whitesville.
Laura Holcomb Dies At California Hospital
Mrs. Laura Annis Holcomb, 88, Coudersport school teacher before the turn of the century, died Thursday afternoon, at a Riveria, Calf., hospital. For the past 10 years she had been living with her daughter, Mrs. H. D. Pratt, at Rolling Hill, Calif.
Born Feb. 25, 1871 at Haneyville, Pa., she was graduated from Lock Haven Sodue normal School and came to Coudersport as a teacher in 1888. She was the widow of Verdette Holcomb. Mrs. Holcomb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Coudersport.
Surviving are a son, Potter County Sheriff Harold Holcomb of Coudersport; two daughters, Mrs. Pratt of Rolling Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Chester Ireva Simar of Port Allegany; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Coudersport. Burial was made in Eulalia Cemetery.
Reuben Perkins Dies Instantly in Crash
Reuben Perkins, 37, of Oswayo, was instantly killed in an automobile accident, at 8 p.m., Saturday, (Oct. 10,1959) in Shinglehouse.
Mr. Perkins was a son of Floyd Perkins Sr. and the late Mrs. Myra Galtin Perkins. He married the former Ella Downs in Oswayo in 1949. The World War II veteran was a member of American Legion Post 192, Coudersport.
Surviving are six children: Myra Perkins, 10; Patricia Perkins, 8; Michael Perkins, 6; Glenn Perkins, 4; Stephen Perkins, 3; and Karen Perkins, 1 1: seven sisters: Mrs. Gertrude Freelove and Miss Ruth Perkins, both of Bradford; Mrs. Elwin Smith, Mansfield: Mrs. George Hamilton, Genesee; Mrs. Warren Calhoun, Oswayo; Mrs. Robert Watson, Olean; Mrs. George Thompson, Ulysses; two brothers: Dorr Perkins, Oswayo; and Floyd Perkins Jr., Conneautville, Pa., and several• nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was from the Howard Funeral Home in Shinglehouse, Tuesday at 12:30. The Rev. Lewis Rea officiated. Interment was in Rathbone Cemetery at Coneville. at Coneville.
John Stearns, 71, Meets Violent Death
Death came suddenly to John Stearns of Oswayo, Saturday, (Oct. 10, 1959). He died en route to a hospital in Olean, following an accident at Shinglehouse. The report is on another page.
Mr. Stearns was born in Greenwood, N. Y., May 17, 1888 and had lived in Oswayo the past 50 years. His second wife, the Josephine Shall, Oswayo, in 1954.
Deceased is survived by a stepdaughter, Miss Helen Shall, Wellsthree sons: Clarence Stearns, Burlington, N. J.; Gordon Stearns, Oswayo; and Ralph Stearns, serving in the U.S. Air Force, and stationed at Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Carl Bryant, Shinglehouse; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Tuesday from the Howard Funeral Home at Shinglehouse. The Rev. Lewis Rea, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, officiated. Burial was in Wells Cemetery at Oswayo.
Brother of Mrs. Frink Dies In Wellsville
Mrs. Jack Frink was called to Allentown, N.Y., the latter part of last week due to the death of her brother, Charles Jones, who died Wellsville hospital, Wednesday evening.
W. L. Press Dies Shinglehouse Resident, 60, Ill only Short Time.
Information was received here this morning that W. Lyon Press. life-long resident of Shinglehouse, died vesterday in the Olean General Hospital. He had been ill only a short time. Mr. Press had been a foreman in the gas fields for nearly 40 years.
Born Sept. 22, 1899, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Press, he was married in 1930 to Kathryn Miller, who survives. Mr. Press was past master of the Sharon Lodge, Free and Accepted Mason, 598; a member of the Coudersport Consistory; and past presiden and life member of the Shinglehoust Volunteer Fire Department.
A veteran of World War 1, he was a member of Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, and was a past commander.
Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Mrs. James Anderson of Port Allegany; two sisters, Y., Gertrude Press of BelMiss Press of Allegany, N. Eloises mont, N. Y.; one brother, Ira Press of Shinglehouse; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the family home at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon. The Rev. Roy M. Black will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery with military committal service at graveside.
Francis Hanley, Native Of Coudersport, Dies
The sad news of the death of Francis J. Hanley was received here this morning. He had been a patient in Sewickley Valley Hospital for four months.
Deceased was a son of James and Elizabeth Dolan Hanley, born in Coudersport 56 years ago. He served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 16 years at Greensburg, retiring in 1941. Since retirement he had been employed by a steel company.
Survivors are: his wife, Jessie: three sons, James, Delmont, Pa., John and Timothy, at home; two grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Charles Spearing, Hollidaysburg, Mrs. Daniel Egan, Sunbury, Mrs. Wilbur Bradley and Mrs. Norman Keck, Coudersport.
Funeral service was held Tuesday with burial in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery at Indiana, Pa.
District Legion Caucus to Feature Dinner, Dance Sat.
Today is the last day for making reservations for the 16th District American Legion u caucus planned for Saturday night at the Post 192 Home.
A ham supper will be served at 6:30 and a dance will follow the meeting.
Hugh Cunningham, district commander, of Blossburg, will preside at the affair to which Legionnaires and their wives are invited.
Air Force Career Man Transferred To Alaska
M Sgt. Clarence L. Baker has been transferred to Alaska for the last hitch of his Air Force career. He has been in the service for 19 years and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. *Simeon Baker.
