Philo Shelton "Filo" Hall
Cattaraugus County, New York
Philo and his father were one of the first white men to settle in this county. His parents were David and Ann (Jackson) Hall. Philo was known as one of the best river pilots. He rafted down the Allegany River all the way to Pittsburgh, and the Ohio Rivers to St louis for lumber and other goods. He was buried in the Hall family Cemetery. Sometimes called the West River Road Cemetery. The cemetery was leveled by someone who want to use the land for something else. Now only one stone still remains, of Lucy Mariah Hall wife of Alvah Hall. Online one can find a map drawn by Irene (Hall) Anderson, and a interpeted one of the family members that are buried there.

David Hall genealogy
Hi there
I am indeed a Hall descendant, and descended from David Hall. However I do not know if he had a middle name. However, his father, Philomon (Philo) Hall had Shelton as a middle name. It is thought that it may have been a reference to a popular minister back in the east. Here is the family information on Philo Shelton Hall. There were two Hall Families in Allegany in the late 1800's. In 1885, my David Hall and his four daughters, along with other families (the Hydes, Cooks, Thompsons, and Raishes) decided to move to Nebraska because of the lure of free land and a new start.

Philo was hurt in a logging injury and was unable to work and with 14 children, things were tough financially. It was said his children would go barefooted to school and carry their shoes till they reached the school house to save their shoes. The Indians in the area would stop a Philo's cabin on their way to Canada to hunt and would sleep on the floor of his cabin. On their return trip, they would leave meat for Philo and his family. - Florence Fay Redstone 1999
