  Larry Herbstritt Herbstritt-Snyder-Essex-Figg-Davey-Chase-Dunn-Ellison Family Descendants 8 mins 20161031- Here is an excerpt from "Early History of the Town of Springwater" by Orson Walbridge (written around 1884) If you have read my information on Peter Shay's family you will realize that the Shay and the Roberts families are closely related. Starting with Elizabeth Roberts who married Richard Shay and on down through several generations Shay and Roberts or their descendants married. Many of Richard Shays descendants were disappointed to find that they did not descend from Capt. Daniel Shays, the leader of Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts. They should not be,as Richard's father Peter Shay Sr fought all through the Revolution and Richard and his brothers Lewis and John fought in the War of 1812. And on down through the years both Roberts and Shays were in the Civil War and many gave their lives. Because of this close connection between the families I felt it would be well to give some information on the Roberts family as well as the Shays. Peter Roberts was born in Bucks County in Penna in 1744. Bucks County is adjacent to New Jersey and in the early days before boundaries were established there was a great deal of controvery as to whether people were born in New Jersey or Penna in this region. Peter lived in Lower Makefield in Bucks Co throughout the Revolution. During the war the Provincial government at Philadelphia ordered "Transcription Lists" in various years to determine the men who were of fighting age and what farm supplies were available for the army's use. In 1779 Peter Roberts was the only one of the family listed in Lower Makefield. He had 171 acres of land, 15 horses, 9 cattle and no servants. In 1781 he still had the 171 acres of land, but only 4 horses, 9 cattle (apparently the government had taken some of his assets). In 1780 he was taxed 4lbs. 110 shillings and 8 pence. In 1782 he had his land, 3 horses and 1 cow. In 1784 he had 2 houses, 1 outhouse, 9 inhabitants but one of the sons were apparently old enough for service as farmhands. In 1785 He had his 171 acres, 4 horses and 5 cattle. In 1786 he was taxed 1 lb. 5 shillings, 6 pence. In 1787 he had 171 acres and was taxed 1 lb. 5 schilling, 4 pence. Peter did some Minute Man service in the Revolution. He was listed in the "Light Horse Cavalry of Bucks County on 18 June 1781. This information is in the 5th series, Penna Archives, Vol.5, pg 415. In preceding pages it stated that Peter Roberts was a breeder of horses which would answer any questio~ about his being in the Cavalry. A Peter Roberts served in the Yorks Co Militia; Capt James Moffett Co. 6th Battalion of York Co.. Apr 26, 1778 as a private, 7th-class. This might be our Peter as York Co was not far away. In the appendix is a Roberts genealogy taken from "Penna-A History" by a Mr. Donehoo. (It is in Vol.5 pp 214 and 215) There is some hope that our Roberts line might be an extension of it, however, this is as yet unproven. Peter Roberts arrived in Livingston County, New York abotit 1798 according to an account by a grandson Jacob G. Roberts as published in L. R. Doty's "History of Livingston Co." Jacob states that his father Peter Roberts Jr. and an uncle carne from Penna to the flats near Squawkie Hill in 1798, bringing with them a few tools and a rifle. They were sent ahead to prepare the way for their father Peter Roberts Sr. and his family to settle there. Peter Sr. and his family did just that in August 1798 bringing with them a span of horses, a yoke of oxen and five cows. Much of the way they were obliged to chop a passage through thick woods. They were aided by Horatio Jones, who lived nearby. He was a government agent. They managed to complete their log cabin that same fall. Bad luck befell them though, as an Indian woman set fire to the flats and destroyed the hay they were depending on to feed their animals through the corning winter. It is said she did this out of revenge to some other Indians who for some offense would not let her join their pow-wows. Mr. Horatio Jones, the government agent for Indian affairs, in attempting to save some of his livestock nearly lost his own life. Afterwards, he held back $91.00 of the money for the Indians and paid it to the new settlers instead. The story say'sthat the angry Indians having lost $91.00 of their drinking money tied the squaw to a stake and burned her to death. with most of their hay gone the Roberts family tried to save their stock by browsing them in the woods. They chose a spot in what is now Groveland but the browse was not sufficient and they lost most of the animals before spring. They settl~d in the township of Sparta and it was there that Peter Sr. died at the age of 84 and his wife Rebecca at 101 yrs 3 months. Quite another account of what happened is in Col. Hand's "Centennial History of Nunda, N.Y." He said Peter Roberts came to Leicester about one hundred years ago (1808) when there were but few settlers. He had a team and finding the wild grasses bountiful he gathered some stacks for the winter. Some speculated that the Indian woman was reminded of Sullivan's March through the area when his men destroyed her home at Little Beardstown in 1779 and she felt she should revenge it. At any rate she set it ablaze and the local Indians fearing that this act would cause bad blood once more between white and red men, took the matter into their own hands and accused her of being a witch and burned her at the stake. Take your pick, in either case, the squaw got her punishment. It is said that only the oxen made it through that winter. Soon after Peter Roberts settled in Groveland nearby and in 1812 the War being in progress, a draft of men was made and one of his neighbors (William Scott) was drafted and did not want to go so he gave Mr. Roberts $50.00 to go in his place. He did not only go in Soctt's place, but volunteered on three other occasions in his own name. In the following text you will find "XIS" in front of some numbers. He enlisted in South Carolina in March 1776 as a private in the Company of Captain Eli Kershaw in the regiment commanded by Colonol Thompson and Lt. Col Mason. Zaccheus fought in the battle of Fort Moultrie, the battle of Eutaw Springs and the battle of Hanging Rock. He served until peace was made in 1783. Zaccheus served both as a scout and as a line soldier. His wife Nancy applied for a revolutionary war pension after Zaccheus' death, and cited this information as the story told her by her husband of his service in that war.
