Record for Philo Shelton "Filo" Hall * Ann JACKSON- What a Woman!
What a Woman!
, CT to NY to MI.
What a woman Ann Jackson was! . She married David Hall (1756) 17 April 1782 in Fairfield, CT, while David was home on a furlough from fighting in the Revolutionary War. When he returned to the army, he was badly wounded in the seige of Yorkstown and suffered from his wounds for the rest of his life. Yet Ann and David had 12 children and probably raised most of them to adulthood. .
It must have been difficult, in David's condition and with so many children, but they moved to Wethersfield NY. To this day, it is still way out in the country. Not only did Ann undertake such a move, but David must have been away a great deal of the time. Before 1800, Western New York was inhabited mostly by Indians, and white men lived in log cabins. But David was a true pioneer, and amongst other endeavors, he and his son Philo became river pilots on the Allegheny River. They had a reputation for being the best. David had a log cabin on the south side of the river between Olean and Allegany, and was said to have been the first white man to live south of the Allegany..
David Hall died 2 March 1822, and Ann moved to Michigan to live with one of two daughters who lived there. (Probablily Lydia) Ann petioned for a widow's pension, unsuccessfully for a long time, and I have a file of copies of her letters which contain interesting information. For example: David was on a list of applicants for invalid pension submitted to the House of Representatives by the Secretary of War on Dec.14 1792. His rank: Sergeant, Regt. Sappers and Miners, Capt. D. Bushel. Disability: Contracted disorders by hardships at the siege of Yorktown, which terminated in epilectic fits and the dangerous symptoms of inward bleeding. Date of certificate: Oct 4 1792, Monthly allowance:$2.66 2/3, Arrears due:200.00.
From one of her letters of petition:" David Hall was wounded by being thrown from a breastwork by the wind of a cannon - his breast, shoulder. and hip were injured by the fall, and he was an invalid during life - -he was frequently troubled with fits and a raising of blood, and that his death, which took place in Nunda, Allegany County NY in August 1824 was hastened, if not caused by, his wounds. ".

David Hall's date and place of death: There are two death dates in the above story of David's death date. When Ann first filed for widows pension in Michigan where she was living with her daughter Lydia (Hall) Sweet, she stated in her affidavit, David died August 1824 in Nunda, Allegany, NY. A copy of the original affidavit can be seen in the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files on images (pages) #540 and 541 in the Source Information section on her profile page.
