Robert H.Knapp VERMILLION, S.D. - Robert H. Knapp, 85, of Vermillion died Sunday, Jan. 7, 1990, in a nursing home in Vermillion. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the United Church of Christ with the Rev. Robert Inglis officiating. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery at Vermillion. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in Iver-son-Siecke Funeral Home. Mr. Knapp was born April 10, 1904, at Brock, Neb. He graduated from Brock High school and then taught three years at Brownsville, Neb. In 1927 he graduated from Peru State Teachers College at Peru, Neb., with a BA Degree. He married Myrtle Ellen Law in 1928. He taught at Lyons, Neb., and was superintendent of schools in Honey Creek, Burchard and Grafton, Neb. He received an MA Degree in 1932 and a Ph.D. in 1938 from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He became professor of education and guidance at Culver-
Stockton College at Canton, Mo. He came to the University of South Dakota in 1947 as director of student guidance and counseling and professor of education. He retired in 1972 as Professor Emeritus. He authored two books, Practical Guidance Methods and Guidance in The Elementary School. Mr. Knapp was instrumental in bringing Omicron Delta Kappa, a senior scholastic organization, to the USD campus and served as secretary for 20 years. He was the recipient of Phi Delta Kappa TM Risk Distinguished Service Award as outstanding educator in South Dakota in 1972. He received the South Dakota Personnel and Guidance Plaque for distinguished contribution to guidance. He was listed in Who's Who in the Midwest in 1972 and in 1974 he was listed in Leaders in Education. He was a member of United Church of Christ in Vermillion, a 33rd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite of Free Masonery. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, a Master Mason in Incense Lodge 2, a life member of the Vermillion Senior Citizens Center and a charter member of the USD Heritage Club. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Karen) Assunto of Suffield, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial has been established in his name with the USD Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
