MEMORY OF MRS. HALL.
Contributed Article Upon the Live of Allegany Woman.
The death of Mrs. Lucunda A. Hall occurred Feb. 5th, 1909, at Quaker Bridge, N.Y. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dunning, who have tenderly cared for her since the 20th of July, 1908.
Mrs. Hall was born in Masonville, Delaware county, N.Y., in the year 1819, and had she lived until July 22nd., she would have been ninety years old.
She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Colony, and the last of eleven children; four sisters, four brothers and two half brothers.
She was married in the fall of 1841 to Mrs. D.S. Hall of Allegany, N.Y. and came to reside there in 1851.
She was the mother of five children; one girl and four boys, the last being a boy born in Allegany. She resided in that place for thirty three years in Olean; a little more than six months of that time was spent in Babcock in the town of Bradford, Pa., where on Dec. 17th, 1908, the house in which she lived was burned to the ground caused by a gas explosion. She was quite badly burned about the face and received injuries of the spine and limbs, causing almost inability to walk, which made it necessary for some one to assist her in walking.
In early life she became a Christian and united with the M.E. church, and in later years, she accepted the views held by Seventh Day Adventists.
She was a helpful mother to many of the old residents of Allegany and was loved by all who know her. She won her way into the hearts of those who cared for her in her last sickness.
She is survived by two sons.
Aaron J. of Olean,
and Alvy B., a prominent business man of Omaha, Neb.,
who were both ill at the time of the funeral and could not be present.
There also remains to mourn
three grand children:
Mrs. J.S. Reed of Seattle, Wash.,
Mrs. L.M. Adams of Batavia, N.Y.,
Mrs. J.S. Chanter(?) of Olean
and three great grand children,
one of whom,
Mrs. M.S. Fitch was caring for her when the house burned.
The funeral was held at Steamburg, N.Y., and was well attended. She looked like a tired warrior, at rest. In her hand was placed a lily which was a fit emblem of her character. Carnations, calla lilies and sheaf of wheat were on the casket. Music was rendered by a choir of students from the S.D.A. Intermediate school at Tunessassa, N.Y. Comforting words were spoken by Elder H.W. Carr, based on Job 14:14, "No Hope." The theme of the Resurrection cheered her in life and comforted her in death.
