Dear John,
I saw your information about Reginald Spring (ID: 101419) on Ancestry.com. He was "Uncle Rex" to me; my mother was his niece. My grandmother, Agnes Clara (Spring) Saunders, was his oldest sister.
I had started working on my family's genealogy MANY years ago (as a teen-ager). My grandmother, Rex and their sister (Harriet Salmen) talked to me quite a lot about their ancestors. I believe that I have all the information that I collected years ago, but since it's been a very long time, I've been busy retracing my steps.
Please tell me how you are related, and where you live. Are you any relation to Bob Spring?
Thank you, John! I will look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
Carol Garden

- [S109] Carol Garden, e-mail: Carol Garden, Tody (per Aunt Betty, "Tody" for "Toe Head" -20171102 Akron, NY.
You asked about Harriet ('Tody') Cleveland. Tody was one of Reginald ("Uncle Rex") and Violet Spring's 3 children. She was probably my mother's closest cousin. As you know, Uncle Rex was a wonderful story teller, with a great sense of humor and Tody inherited his ability to entertain. She is quite hard of hearing and can't see well either. . . a cataract in one eye and macular degeneration in the other, so she uses a 'reader' (forgotten the term for it) to magnify. She also uses a walker, and does not go upstairs in her home.
Tody's husband, Spencer, was an attorney. He died ~ 1950, when we were in Germany; he was found hanging in a barn (a presumed suicide). I'm giving you the sad details, aren't I?! From what my mother told me, she kept his law offices open and did quite well.
She moved from Snyder (outside Buffalo), N.Y. to Tucson years ago, and her house is about a block from her only daughter, Charlotte. Tody told me that she thinks people don't survive when they go into assisted living or care centers. You can tell that she is fiercely independent. . . a Spring family trait, I am sure. She really does remarkably well. Charlotte goes to her house

John and Bobby -
I want to send this information while it's fresh on my mind.
Yesterday I was at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City again. A friend likes to go once a week, so I guess we're back 'in the groove', though I'm never sure where I'll fit that into my life.
I tried to find the birth record for Clara Agnes Mays to figure out whether she was born 30 Dec 1842 or 1843. I didn't find it, but I'm getting closer. I did find a record of her marriage to John Spring on 4 Jan 1867. We already had the information, but it's fun to have a copy of the original. (Someday I'll get one to you.) Eliza Ann Mays (a sister) and William Henry Mays (a brother) were witnesses.
I also found the marriage of Clara Agnes' older sister, Rebekah, to George Brown on 11 July 1859; he was a shoemaker. Eliza Ann Mays was a witness at her marriage too. All this was in: Marriages at St. Paul's, Bedford, Bedfordshire 1813 - 1867. Film #0952398.
Today I received a wonderful letter from Bob Spring in Tacoma. He said that years ago Harriet Salmen visited relatives in Bedford, England and later gave him interesting accounts on the 8 surviving children of James Mays and Anne Wildman. I must send a copy of that. He said to look on the internet for Dr. William Henry Mays, who became a prominent San Francisco surgeon. Incidentally, I was certain she had told me that too, but I haven't been able to find anything when I've looked; I must try again. (In Bob's letter, he says that Aunt Harriet told him William Mays graduated from U.C. in 1877; also, he lived in Sausalito . . perhaps that and other information he gave me will help)
More later. . . Carol
