Eva K. Swift
Jun 3, 2005
Eva K. Swift, 101, of White Chopping Road, Hebron, died Saturday (May 28, 2005) in her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born March 3, 1904 in Hebron, she was a daughter of Fred S. and Etta "Josephine" Dingman Snyder. On June 10, 1926 in Hornell, NY, she married Alfred A. Swift, who died May 22, 1991.
Mrs. Swift attended grade school at the Hydorn School on Crandall Hill. She was a graduate of the Coudersport High School, Class of 1924 and earned teaching certification from Mansfield Normal School, now Mansfield University. After completing her certification, she spent two years teaching all eight grade levels at the Harvey School. She then taught first through fourth grades in Coneville for the next several years. After her marriage, Mrs. Swift and her husband operated the General Store in Coneville for several years. By 1956, Mrs. Swift earned a master's degree in special education from Mansfield University. She started the first special education classroom in the Oswayo Valley School District in Shinglehouse, where she retired from in 1970.
As a youth she attended the First Hebron Seventh Day Baptist Church. She was an active member of the church and helped to earn money to build the Crandall Hill Community Building by performing plays for audiences as far away as Allegany, NY. She could also be found helping her father on the farm and her grandmother at her boarding house.
She was a member of the former Hebron Grange #1251 and a life member of PSEA and NEA. Throughout her lifetime, she had enjoyed many activities including farming and gardening. In her later years, she crocheted afghans and doilies until her eyesight failed. She then enjoyed listening to game shows on television.
Surviving are four sons, Manuel A. (Donna) Swift of Oklahoma City, OK, Albert A. (Bernice) Swift of East Bethany, NY, Milton F. "Buzzy" (Linda) Swift of Roulette and Dewayne L. "Dewey" (Tobie) Swift of Pleasantville; two daughters, Kaye (Robert) Baxter of Tioga and Jacqueline (Merle) Clark of Wellsboro; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Pepperman of Coudersport; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Swift was preceded in death by two daughters, Evelyn Taylor and Ramona Pesock; two grandsons; her twin sister, Iva K. Spring; and her sister, Elizabeth Tauscher.
At Mrs. Swift's request, there was no public visitation. Funeral services were held on Tuesday (May 31, 2005) in the Hebron Seventh Day Baptist Church, Hebron. Jo Anne Kandel, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the Hebron Cemetery.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Hebron Cemetery Association, 1022 Whitney Creek, Coudersport, PA 16915, or to the Hebron Seventh Day Baptist Church, 13 Carley Hill Road, Coudersport, PA 16915.
