| LifeSketch | NICHOLAS PAINE (THOMAS 1, THOMAS 2) b.c.1663 m. 9 Jan. 1699 Eastham, HANNAH HIGGINS (b.c.1672, d. 24 Jan. 1731/2 Eastham) will 29 July 1732- 15 Nov. 1733 Eastham On 29 Jan. 1714/5 “Nicholas Paine and wife Hannah sell to their brother, Jonathan Higgins Jr., a parcel of land given by our grandfather, Lieut. Joseph Rogers, in his last will and testament unto our honoured mother, Elizabeth Higgins deceased, both upland and swamp, our own absolute estate. Signed Nicholas Paine, Hannah Paine her mark.”(3) Nicholas settled at Keaskakogansett and was a miller and farmer “and had not much to do with public affairs.”(1) “The twentieth ninth day of July, 1732, I Nicholas Paine of Eastham… do make… this my last will and testament… I give all and singular my lands and meadows, together with my house and barn which I have in the town of Eastham, unto my son in law, William Norcut, and his wife, Precillah, my daughter… Item. I give unto my two grand children namely Thankful Smith and Lois Freeman, thirty shillings apiece out of my moveable estate… I give the remainder of my moveable estate unto my two daughters in equal shares namely: to my daughter Abigail Higgins and Lydia Young, forever. I do constitute, make and ordain my cousin [nephew], William Paine, my sole Executor… Nicholas Paine In witness of James Cole Eleazar Cole Israel Cole” The estate was appraised on 12 Dec. 1733 for £512, 3s. (2) In 1868 a rock was taken from the homestead on the easterly side of the road bearing the letters “N.P.” It was below the hill where Nicholas’ wind mill stood.(2) Oh… and this gravestone for a cousin in Woodstock, CT: “Erected To the memory of Mr. ROYAL PAINE, Son of Capt. Amos Paine, Late of Woodstock, Conn., Who departed this life July 2d, 1816” And he had a son Royal Paine, Jr. One has to wonder how many Royal Paines are out there today… I’ve know a few. Issue- • I.
