DEATH OF A PIONEER
Oct 9- 1903 (publication date -jcw20161127)
Mrs. Rebecca Gray Passed Away at Grandville on Thursday.
Mrs. Rebecca Gray, for many years a resident of Kent county, passed away at Grandville at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eliza DeYoung, Thursday, at the ripe old age of 93 years.
Mrs. Gray, or "Grandma" Gray, as she was known by all her friends and acquaintances, was born in livingston county, New York, May 23, 1810, came to Michigan with her husband, James Gray, in 1837, settled in Hillsdale county. In 1857, they moved to this county, to their farm just east of Grandville, where she had spent a greater part of the time since. Her husband passed away some years ago at the age of 84 years.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gray, two of whom,
- Mrs. Eliza DeYoung and
- Mrs. O.E. Locke, both of Grandville, still survive her.
She also leaves
- nine grandchildren,
- ten great-grandchildren,
- three great-great-grandchildren.
Her life had extended over a period of time in which had occurred many or most of modern inventions, and unlike most people of old age, she kept pace with the advancement and instead of growing apart from the present generation became as one of them and enjoyed the good things of this life. Her geneal and generous good nature endeared her to all who knew her.
