Barr - Card (16) facts

Harold F. Baker, A Journey in Time, 1811-1986, p.11-
The first farm north of the Bradley Burr property and on the east side of the Sartwell Creek road was settled very early by Reuben Card, Jr., son of Reuben and Polly (Palmer) Card who were early settlers at the mouth of Card Creek.
The 1850 census shows that Reuben, Jr., age 28 and Catharine (Barr) Card, age 21, lived here with two children:
Lucretia, age 2 and
Mary,, 5 months old.
The 1860 census shows the same but added Marion, Obid, Henry, Olive, Stephen and Dorman. Dorman later became the owner of this farm renting it to others.
[Author's note: My brother, Donald F. Baker, was born here November 17, 1903.]
Dorman was a school teacher in Pleasant Valley and Roulette Townships as well as several other places for many years. Later he moved to Roulette and was a partner in the Card and Barr hardware store located on River Street. In the late 1860's, there must have been an epidemic during which a number of the Card children died, including Lucretia, Rosa, and others. Unfortunately, there are no names on the cemetery markers.
Dorman Card sold the farm to Merritt and Estella (Campbell) Witter on November 11, 1914. Merritt expanded the farm by buying the farm of Frank Mattison which was located across from the lower Sartwell Creek school house and north of the Hanson Hollow road on January 29, 1919.
