Old Family History Traced by Jackson
By: S. L. Jackson
That they might have independence, freedom and religious liberty, our ancestors came to America. All these they found or achieved, but the price they paid was high in deprivations and hardships. It was these hardships that hardened and strengthened them and this vigor they transmitted to their offspring.
An incident related by Mrs. Hannah M. Jones, a resident of the Swale Cameron township, of her ancestress, Mrs. William Loghry, is but one of thousands denoting the harrowing experiences of colonial periods. William Loghry married and resided in a Pennsylvania village in Luzerne County, Penna., Later he took up a tract in the wilderness ten miles from neighbors, where he erected a log cabin and removed his family, wife, small daughter and infant twin sons. During an absence from home of several days, one of the twins sickened and died. There being no aid at hand and Mr. Loghry not returning, Mrs. Loghry dug a grave and buried her child.
Hannah M. Drake, born Nov. 13, 1837, daughter of Peter H. and Lettie Santee Drake, at West Cameron. She married May 31, 1857, Mark Jones. They resided on the Swale, Cameron township. After his death she removed to Hornell to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Winifred Fairbanks, where she died Nov. 20, 1928. She was beloved by all who knew her. During her last twenty years she was blind. She would write a line and fold it under to bring the next line at the top of the sheet so as not to interline the script.
To Mark and Hannah Jones were born: Willis (Florence Creesy), Julia (Robert Stuart), Alice (George Peck), Israel (Mary Peck), Winifred (Joel Fairbanks).
Mrs. Jones retained her memory to the last and delighted to tell stories of the period of her youth. Her ancestors she traced back to the early Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, now New York City.
Mrs. Jones’ father Peter H. Drake was born Oct. 1,1811 in the vicinity of New York, came to Cameron with his parents Reuben and Rebecca Drake in 1822. He settled on the farm of his father at the death of the latter, where he continued to reside. Peter H. married Nov. 6, 1831, Lettie Santee, born July 21, 1814, daughter of Isaac and Nancy Santee of West Cameron. To them were born Emily (Isaac Jones), Hannah (Mary Jones), Mary (J. F. Talbot) and two sons died in childhood.
Mrs. Drake died March 4, 1879 and Peter H. died December 1892.
Peter’s father, Reuben Drake, was born Aug. 7, 1786 in New York state. He married Rebecca Lockwood, born about 1789, and they settled on the Swale on what is now known as the Ira Ferguson farm. To them were born Hugh (Matilda White), John (Mary Murray), Peter H. (Lettie Santee), Benjamin (Mariah Smith), Lockwood, Smith L. (Sarah J. Clark) Ruth Olmstead), Elijah (Cornelia Blakeslee), Elizabeth (Hiram Snyder), Hannah (Gilbert Murray), Geo. W. (Almira Loghry) was an adopted son.
Reuben died June 18, 1854.
Reuben Drake’s father, Benjamin Drake, married in 1784 Sarah -------------. Benjamin’s father, John Drake, married in 1720 Magdelina Brower. Her ancestors trace to William Bocadus and his wife Wyntje Sybrant, married Aug. 29, 1658, early Dutch settlers in New York.
Isaac Santee, father of Mrs. Peter H. Drake, was born in New Jersey in 1780, son of Valentine and Margaret Santee. He married in 1810 Nancy Moore, born 1794, daughter of John and Mary Moore. About 1817 they settled in West Cameron where they died. Isaac became prominent in town affairs, serving as school commissioner, town clerk, supervisor and was delegate to the “Anti-rent” convention at Bath in 1830. He was class leader of the first religious society organized in West Cameron in 1834. To Isaac and Nancy Santee were born: Mary (Luther White), Lettie (Peter H. Drake), John (Rachel Stephens), Joseph (Eliza Susanah Williamson), Pamela (A. Baker).
Mrs. Nancy Santee died July 15, 1840. Isaac married second Mrs. Nancy (Almy) Owens, widow of Jonathan F. Owens. Isaac died Oct. 16, 1864. His second wife died Jan. 22, 1863.
Valentine Santee, father of Isaac, was born in 1740. He was a farmer in Huntington township, Luzerne county, Penna., He married Margaret Funston and second Mary Craig. He had eight children, Nicholas, James (J. Moore), Isaac (Nancy Moore), Mary (Joseph Loghry), Catherine, Nancy.
Nancy Moore, wife of Isaac Santee, was a daughter of John and Mary (Loghry) Moore. John Moore was a native of Ireland and came to America about 1790. He married Mary Loghry in Pennsylvania and they moved to Canisteo township, one mile from Cameron town line on the William Taylor farm, about 1813.
John was a large landholder, in Canisteo and Cameron. At the latter place he owned the Walbridge farm, which by the way is still in possession of John’s descendants.
To John and Mary were born: Nancy (Isaac Santee), Susan (Nathan Stephens), Mary (Stephens), Letice (Nehemiah Thomas), Elizabeth (Elijah Hallett – Nathan Hallet), Martie (James Folton), Joseph (Hulda Hallet), James (not Md), William (Mary Brown), Jane (John Myers), Sarah (Samuel Taylor), Lucy (Benjamin Buck).
John Moore died Feb. 28, 1838 and Mrs. Moore died in the autumn of 1846. Burial at Brown’s Crossing, Canisteo.
Mary Loghry, wife of John Moore, was daughter of William and Nancy Loghry. William was born in Ireland about 1743. He came to America and settled in Luzerne county, Pa., as shown by the federal census of 1790, when his family consisted of one son and one daughter, which coincides with the family tradition as told by Mrs. Hannah Jones.
William Loghry married Nancy Purdy and they removed to Cameron about 1815. To them were born: Mary (John Moore), Joseph (Mary Santee), and William’s twin brother that died in childhood as reported by Mrs. Jones.
Mrs. Loghry died Sept. 1, 1828, aged 80 years, and William died Sept. 18, 1837 in his 94th year. Burial was in Brown’s Crossing burial ground.
