Hard Luck Still Pursues Former Jap Captive, Now Here
Daughter's Leg Broken in Crash Tuesday On. East Secoh Street Accident Another of Garage Worker's Bad Breaks.
Nemesis still dogs the footsteps of T. J. Ebert, Coudersport garage worker.
Tortured for months by the Japanese after he was taken prisoner in the early stages of the war, Mr. Ebert was liberated by the American forces in the nick of time. He said that he had been broiled over a slow fire at regular intervals by his captors.
When the war ended he brought his family to Coudersport and ran straight into the housing shortage. He was forced to live for a time in what he described as a "pig sty."
Several weeks ago an infant born to Mr. and Mrs. Ebert died. The mother was seriously ill for days.
Tuesday Mr. Ebert and his 5-year-old daughter, Eleanor, were driving east on Second Street toward the family's new home at Sweden Valley. Without warning, a car driven by Bert Holcomb, R. D. 4, plunged across the road after making a U turn and smashed into the Ebert car. Eleanor's leg was broken in two places. Her father was uninjured.
He estimated the damage to his car would exceed $400.
