CLAY LINEAGE:
William Mitchell Clay
(1) Martha Runyan was born about 1710. She died about 1747 in Henrico County, Virginia.
(2) William Mitchell Clay was born between Jan 15 1707 and 1710 in Henrico County, Virginia. He died on September 6, 1774 in Point Pleasant, Virginia.
According to A. S. Withers in his book "Chronicles of Border Warfare", Col. Field, who was under the command of General Lewis, took his company and left the main body or the Army on its march. While detached from the forces under General Lewis, two of Col. Field's men (Clay and Coward) were sent out to hunt deer for Col. Fields Company. They were a little ways apart when two Indians saw Clay, and thinking that he was alone, fired at him. As the Indians were about to scalp Clay, Mr. Coward saw what was happening and shot one of the Indians and killed him. The other Indian ran off and escaped. Although it is not clear why a 64 year old man would be making a 250 mile journey on foot, he earned the dubious distinction of becoming the unit's first casualty. Clay appeared on roster of Charles Lewis's Regiment, with a note that he had been killed, “Death of Soldier named Clay in Col. John Field's Company, 9/10/1774”.
There is some confusion as to the wives of William Mitchell Clay. The best I've been able to figure out from various sources is that William was married at least twice and possibly three times;
1. Martha Runyan
2. Martha Ann Lewis
3. Possible marriage to Agnes (Unknown)
On September 22, 1768, a William Clay posted an advertisement in the Virginia Gazette which read:
"Whereas my wife Agnes has eloped from my bed, and robbed me of things of considerable value, and I expect will endeavor to run me in debt, I therefore forewarn all persons from dealing with her on my account, as I will pay no debts of her contracting. William Clay"
William and Agnes were either back together by May of 1769 or she was still using his name as she appears in Chesterfield County Court documents dated May 5, 1769. "Agness wife of Wm. Clay being privily examined acknowledged a Deed from the said William to Elam Farmer" (Court of 5 May 1769) Chesterfield County, Virginia, Order Book 4 1767-1771 p. 295This may have been a different William Clay...and there were several William Clays living in that area at that time. He was married to Martha Runyan about 1730 in Henrico Co., VA.

(14) Charles Clay was born in 1638 in Charles City, Virginia. He died in 1686 in Henrico County, Virginia. Charles was a wealthy man and was a leader in Nathan Bacon's Rebellion of 1676.
According to information from Dolly Cobb which includes excerpts from "The Clay Family" by Mary Rogers Clay,
"Charles Clay was a soldier in the 'Great Rebellion of 1676;' one of those 'good housekeepers, well-armed' that followed the gallant Bacon in his effort to free Virginia. Of this service the family traditions are fully verified by the records of the Henrico Court. Depositions are there regarding the confiscation and killing of cattle by General Bacon's soldiers. In this list is the name of Charles Clay (Bk 1677-92) We know he was a gallant soldier, for his worthy descendants have been such wherever they have fought, whether at Ninety-Six, New Orleans, Buena Vista, Chickamauga, or Santiage; yet we wonder (is it disloyal to wonder?) if he were one of the rebels at work on the breastworks in front of the palisades that bright September night when Madam Bray, Madam Page, Madam Ballard, the 'white-apron' guard, sat in the forefront?"
Charles and Hannah Wilson Clay had the following children:
Mary Clay was born in 1664 in Dale Parrish, Chesterfield County, Virginia. She died about 1758.

(21) Capt. John Thomas Clay was born in 1587 in Montmouthshire, England. He died between 1656 and 1675 in Charles City County, Virginia.
John Thomas Clay landed at Jamestown Virginia in 1613. He arrived aboard the "Treasurer". His wife Anne arrived in 1623 aboard the "Ann". He appears to be the first of this family in Virginia. He was living at Jordan's Journey, Charles City County, Virginia in 1625 when he made a muster of this family in the census of that year as follows:
“John Claye in the "Treasurer", February, 1613 Ann Claye, his wife in the "Ann" August 1623. William Nichols, servant, aged 26 in the "Duke" May 1619”.
In "Bottom's List of Emigrants to America 1600-1700" (The Muster of the Inhabitants of Jordans Journey), quote.
"Charles Little taken the 20th of January, 1624 of these, the Muster of John Claye - Patent (210) grants John Clay 1200 acres in Charles City County, Virginia, beginning at the lands granted by order of Court to Francis Hooke, up to the head of Ward's his creek, and bounded on the north by James River. Due 100 acres to his as an old planter before the government of Sir Thomas Dale, and the other 1100 for the transportation of twenty-two persons by the "West", July 13, 1635 (Ledger I page 230).
August 23, 1643, John Wall patented 1790 acres on Chippoakes Creek, between John Hooke and William Pilkington, adjacent John Clay and John Freme. And William Bailey patented 400 acres of land in Charles City County on May 1, 1655, "part of a divident of 200 acres granted Captain Francis Hooke, October 26, 1637 and assigned to John Clay and John Freme and by inheritance descended unto William Clay, son of said John and by William Bailey purchased of said William Clay, the younger." Perhaps this John moved to Surry County or perhaps another John Clay was living in Surry County. On February, 1663, Anthony Spilltimber of Surry and his wife Mary, daughter of Robert Harris, formerly of Isle of Wright, sold 250 acres on Lawne's Creek to John Clay of Surry. In 1688 this land was the subject of a suit between Anthony Spilltimber and John Jennings who married his wife's sister. Spilltimber said that he had sold his rights to John Clay, Sr., "upon which he now liveth." This John Clay made his will in 1675 as "John Clay the elder", and gave his son William the land he had bought of Anthony Spilltimber. William Clay died in 1675 and left two daughters Elizabeth and Sarah.
Some researchers list Capt. John Thomas Clay as the father of Charles Clay of Bacon's Rebellion. Still other researchers say that Charles was the grandson of Capt John Thomas, the son of John Thomas, Jr. It is very possible that these were entirely two different John Clays. He was married to Anna Nicholle Nichols sometime before 1613 in London, England. (22) Anna Nicholle Nichols was born about 1590 in Wales. She died in 1638.
Capt. John Thomas and Anna Nicholle Nichols Clay had the following children:
Francis Clay
William Clay
Thomas Clay
Charles Clay (of Bacon's Rebellion) (14)
