Biography
Clarence was born in 1868 in Clayton, NY, the son of John Bailey and Sarah Esselstyn. His father got into the newspaper business, and the family moved with him first to Auburn, NY by 1870, and then by 1880 to Ann Arbor, MI, where Clarence spent the latter part of his childhood. After graduating from xx high school in about 1886, he went to college, and in 1896, he earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan. He already began displaying his father's influence in editorial skills serving as editor-in-chief of the Dental Journal of the Dental Society of the University of Michigan in 1896.[1] He married Charlotte Conover in Flint, MI in 1897. The couple settled first in Detroit, MI where Clarence practiced dentistry and they started a family, having two children, but the first did not survive. In 1908, the family moved to Dixonville, Oregon where they owned a very successful 50-acre fruit farm they called Conleycott Orchards. The name combined the maiden names of Clarence and Charlotte's mothers. Clarence quickly became involved in civic affairs and was a founding member of the South Deer Creek Grange and later member of the Oregon State Grange Executive Committee (1922-1932). He eventually turned over the farm to his son while he focused on being the editor of the Oregon Grange Bulletin (1929-1940). He passed away in Dixonville in 1946 and is buried with his family in Roseburg Memorial Gardens in nearby Rosebury, OR.

There is a marker at his gravesite that notes he was a private in the Michigan State Troops, US Army, but not other records have confirmed this or given dates. See photo of the marker at the FindaGrave.com site referenced under Sources.)
