| biography | Janet Esselstyn Perkins was born on September 12 1894, in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States of America, to Francis William Rane and Elizabeth Mimi Rane. Janet had 2 siblings: Fannie C. Randolph and Ainsworth Rane. Janet graduated with honors from Wellesley College and worked afterwards as a research assistant and administrator. Janet married James Ripley Osgood Perkins on June 17 1922, at age 27 in Church of the Transfiguration, New York City, New York.Osgood Perkins(16 May 1892-21 Sept. 1937), actor, was born in West Newton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, the son of Henry Perkins, a physician, and Helen Anthony Perkins. Janet also grew up in Newton; her father was the state forester. They had one child: actor Anthony Perkins, born April 4, 1932. \"Oggie\" Perkins was staring in a pre-Broadway tryout of \"Susan and God\" on 20 September 1937, in Washington, D.C. Perkins was unaccustomedly nervous that evening before the performance, and he complained of heartburn, a sore throat, and pains in his arms. But he gave what was later described as a riveting performance. His last recorded words were, \"I like that role. I hope the play never closes.\" Early the next morning, around 2 A.M., the forty-five- year-old Perkins collapsed suddenly and died from a heart attack in his Washington hotel room, his wife at his side. After her husband\'s death, Janet continued to work and helped to run the Rane family business in Newton, the Boston Gardening Co. She and her young son spent time between Boston and Palm Beach, FL where her mother had relocated. Janet died from breast cancer August 24 1979, at age 84 in either New York City, New York or in Hyannis, MA. ENGAGED \'16 Janet Esselstyn Rane to J. R. | LifeSketch | Perkins was born in West Newton, Massachusetts, son of Henry Phelps Perkins Jr., and his wife, Helen Virginia (née Anthony).[2] His maternal grandfather was wood engraver Andrew Varick Stout Anthony.[3] He was a graduate of Harvard College.[4] Perkins made his Broadway debut in 1924 in the George S. Kaufman – Marc Connelly play Beggar on Horseback. In the next 12 years, he would appear in 24 Broadway productions, including The Front Page and Uncle Vanya. Despite his success as a leading man in the theatre, Hollywood viewed him as a character actor. He appeared in 12 silent films, including Puritan Passions, before moving to talkies such as Scarface and Gold Diggers of 1937. \"The best actor I ever worked with was Osgood Perkins,\" Louise Brooks told Kevin Brownlow. \"You know what makes an actor great to work with? Timing. You don\'t have to feel anything. It\'s like dancing with a perfect dancing partner. Osgood Perkins would give you a line so that you would react perfectly. It was timing -- because emotion means nothing.\" Brooks and Perkins appeared together in Love \'Em and Leave \'Em (1926). On September 21, 1937, Osgood died of a heart attack in his bathtub shortly after playing \"Susan and God\".[5] Osgood Perkins was inducted, posthumously, into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981.[6] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood_Perkins [17] | |
