Biography
Frank Rane.
Frank W. Rane was born in 1868 in Whitmore Lake, Michigan to William B. Rane and Nell Ellen Connolly. He grew up in Whitmore Lake, graduating from Ann Arbor High School in 1886. He continued his studies, completing a B.Agr. at Ohio State University in 1891 and an M.S. at Cornell University in 1892. He married Elizabeth Mimi Bailey in 1893 in across the border in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. They brought up three children together. Over the next decade, he pursued a career in horticulture research and university teaching, first at the West Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station and University in Morgantown, and then at the New Hampshire College and Agricultural Experiment Station in Durham. He began exploring the applications of horticulture science to forestry and in 1906, he was named the first state forester of Massachusetts. The family settled in Waban in Newton City on the outskirts of Boston, where in addition to his research interests he established a horticulture business called the Boston Gardening Company that stayed in the family for many years. In 1920, he took up the position as agricultural director and treasurer of the East Coast Finance Corporation based in Palm Beach, FL which was developing land in that area. The family then began sharing its time between Boston and Palm Beach. He died of Parkinsons disease in 1933 in Asheville, NC and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Whitmore Lake, MI with his parents and other family members.

Frank must have been a special person -- or more a phenomenon-- with all of his interests and projects: the epitome of the Victorian man with a wide range of physical and intellectual pursuits and fully engaged. He was a college athlete, playing halfback on the very first Ohio State football team in 1890, and winning the all-round gold medal for athletics at Ohio State in 1891. He then broke the Cornell University 100 yards dash record in 1892, which stood for the next ten years. When he was at West Virginia University, he was the second head coach of the football team in 1893-1894 and gained their first ever victory. He was active in numerous societies and clubs, often leading them at some point, whether athletic and oratorical associations in college, or organizing them, such as the West Virginia State Horticultural Science Society. He was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1898. He was also a member of the Society for the Promotion of Agricultural Science, the Society of Economic Entomologists of America, the American Pomological Society, the American Forestry Association and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests as well as an honorary member of the New Hampshire Lumbermen's Association. And, of course, he was a Freemason. As a researcher, Frank also had a number of publications,

Frank can be seen in a photo of the 1st Ohio State University football squad and he is listed on the Ohio Historical Marker 92-25 at 280 E. Whittier Street in Columbus commemorating the first OSU home game.
Frank's coaching career at West Virginia is described in this Wikipedia post.
Several of Frank's publications on forestry can be found at Online Books or at Biodiversity Library.
Article in Science: Rane FW. Is it not time that the title of 'Professor of Agriculture' should go out of use? Science. 1901:Oct 11;14(354):573-4.
A photo of Frank on the New Hampshire College faculty can be seen at New Hampshire: Unforgettable Vintage Images of the Granite State online.
There is a one-page bio of Frank when he was at New Hampshire College, with a nice profile portrait, on pp. 138-139 of the Granite Monthly,[1] vol 35, 1903. It has a number of details about his academic career to that point.
Frank was one of the 'energetic students' who founded the Ohio State University Agricultural Education Society[2].
While in Durham, NH, Frank established the Rural Science Teachers and Employment Agency. Cornell Alumni News, Vol. 11:No. 31:16 May 1900.
Birth year: Some records indicate 1869, but 1900 Census and the 1912 ship record indicate 1868.
Frank's death notice appeared in the New York Times on 4 May 1933, p. 18. Title: "F.W. Rane Is Dead; A Noted Forester; Former Head of Massachusetts Department Had Taught in Several Universities. Well Known As Author. At One Time He Was Chairman of Bay State Conservation Group -- Owned Garden Firm."
Cornell University printed a brief obituary in [Cornell Alumni News, Vol 35, no. 32, 22 June 1933, p. 414[3].
