Biography
Sarah was born in 1845 in Jefferson County, New York, probably in Clayton on the Saint Lawrence River where her family had recently settled. She was the daughter of John Nash Esselstyn and Harriet Burton Ainsworth. Her father was a merchant in Clayton. Sarah grew up in Clayton. Her father died when she was 7 years old in 1853. Her mother and the family continued to live in Clayton. In about 1866, she married John Newton Bailey, a printer. The couple stayed in Jefferson County for a few years and their first two children were born there. They then moved to Auburn, NY, where John ran a newspaper and printers. They had two more children born while in Auburn. Between 1875 and 1880, the family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where her husband ran another newspaper for several years. In about 1894, her husband returned to Auburn, NY to take up the newspaper there again, leaving Sarah and the children in Michigan. Her husband died in 1899. The 1900 census found Sarah living with her daughter Fannie's family in Duluth, Minnesota. Sarah died there in 1909.
