Not married to an Indian
He married second, probably after 1639 in Massachusetts, Margaret (_____), who was not the mother of his children, nor was she an "Indian princess." She obtained the bulk of his estate and did not respond to her step-sons' subsequent law suit.
Jacobus suggests that Margaret may have been related to Marmaduke Mathews (pastor in Malden) and returned with him to England in 1655.

Truth about Ruth Wheldon
Some of the older publications claim that Gabriel objected to the marriage of his daughter Ruth to Richard Taylor. There is no such proof. His permission was required due to her being a minor (under 21) at the time of the proposed marriage.

Children
See his children's baptism records in Notthingham and deed record of Gabriel with his wife Jane in Nottingham in 1637 at NEHGR article at
http://tinyurl.com/GabrielWheldon starting at p253 (or 14/145 if you're going by the .pdf numbers)
Gabriel Wheldon's children were born in Nottinghamshire, England. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The notes I have are based on TAG Vol XV p 111, "Austin Bearse and His > Alleged Indian Connections," by Donald Lines Jacobus; New Haven, CT; seen at > Sturgis Library, Barnstable, MA. It shows the F.E.Bearse (Ele-wa-tum) mms > info about Margaret being an Indian princess, dau. of a Wampanoag Sagamore, > younger brother of Massasoit. According to J. W. Hawes, he appeared first in > public records in 1638, not 1628, and his children were no doubt born in > England, and were not the children of his second wife Margaret. D. P. Corey > thinks Margaret may have been from Wales, and may have been wife #2. ============================================================= From "Cape Cod Library of Local History & Genealogy" by Leonard H. Smith, I suggest the following: Early Wheldens of Yarmouth, by James W. Hawes Pamphlet #43, p 732 An excerpt: "Gabriel Whelden, b. in Eng, was in the Plymouth Colony in 1638. The date of his arrival in America and the place of his landing are not known. He probably came from Nottinghamshire. His children were no doubt born in England and were probably by a first wife. When he died in 1654 his wife was Margaret, who it seems clear, was his second wife and not the mother of his children. He apparently came to Yarmou th about 1639 with a family of grown children. He left Yarmouth about 1648." Torrey, Clarence Almon. "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD (1985) p 802 From TAG 48:5 (Jan 1972) "John and Mary (Folland) Whelden of Yarmouth, Mass." by MaClean W. McClean, F.A.S.G. The will of Gabriel Whelden of Malden dated "11. 12. 1653" (which Savage read as 11th month (e.g. January), 12, 1653/54, gives 10 shillings to the Malden Church, and all the rest of his estate to his wife Margaret Whelding, including "what money is due unto mee from William Crofts of Linne." It was signed by mark and witnessed by John and Nathaniel Upham, James Laenard and ----- Matthews (Original will, docket #24, 387; copy in Middlesex Probates 1:113). He died at Malden in January 1653/4 [NEHGSR 10:240]. The will was presented for probate, 4 (2) 1654, when the Uphams were sworn as witnesses. An original, undated, inventory survives, showing among other items, the house lot at £4, a house frame at £5, the total, £40.11.8. The widow Margaret may have survived her husband but we find no probate or death date for her. There is nothing to indicate whether she was the mother of any of his children. The fact that the will does not mention, either directly or by implication, any children, is unusual, and the most likely explanation is that Gabriel gave them their portions of his estate either at marriage or by gifts of money or deeds to Barnstable County land. If Margaret was a second wife, there may have been a pre-nuptial agreement setting forth the reasons why she was to have all the estate at Gabriel's death. However, the records show that the two sons, Henry and John, were not satisfied with the terms of the will. In order to fully embrace the theory that the mother of his children was a Native American, one must conclude that he married her in England. 1. Catherine Wheldon married Giles Hopkins 9 Oct 1639 [PCR 1:134] 2. John Wheldon married Mary Folland ca 1655 [ Torrey p 802] 3. Henry Wheldon married Eede (?) 25 or 16 Jan 1748/9 [Torrey p 802] 4. Ruth Wheldon married Richard Taylor [PCR 2:110] The court records, 27 Oct. 1646, that "in the case between Gabriell Whelding and Richard Taylor about his daughter Ruth, the said Gabriell promisseth his free Assent and consent to theire marriage." 5. Ralph Wheldon. There is no record for his marriage or death. [TAG 48:5 (Jan 1972)] Henry and his brother John brought suit, 1655, for their portion of their father's estate [Middlesex files, and Pope]. Gabriel Whelden, his wives & children
The New England Genealogical Historical Society has done extensive research into Gabriel and his family. The results were published in the Register Vol 163 Oct 2009 Vol 165 July & Oct 2011. The latter focuses on the two Richard Taylor Families - Gabriel's daughters Mary & Ruth who both married men named Richard Taylor - they were not the same man. Linked to Gabriel 9NQJ-D54 and wife Jane L563-63S are the correct children. His 2nd wife, Margaret, had no known children with Gabriel and there is no evidence that she was an American Indian. Good luck!

Birthplace, wife & children documented in New England Historical Genealogical Society Register Vol 163 (Oct 2009)
In the paper titled, "The Origins of Gabriel Whelden of Yarmouth and Malden, Massachusets" by Jan Porter and Daniel F. Stramara, Jr., published in the NEHGS Register, Vol. 163 (Oct 2009) pgs 253-261. They have done extensive research for us and site numerous sources. Among the sources they site, "The American Genealogist 15 (1938-39):111-118", addressed the suggestion that Gabriel's second wife, Margaret, was an American Indian is discussed and disproved. I feel confident that since they site this source in their 2009 paper, no newer information has come forth and been supported by evidence. Additionally, the second wife, Margaret, was not the mother of any of Gabriel's children. All were born to wife, "Jane", in England, and the baptismal records for all of Gabriel's know children were located at St. Leodegarius Church in Basford, Nottinghamshire, England. I have also located a lengthy genealogical paper published in 2011* regarding Gabriel's daughters, Mary & Ruth who both married men named Richard Taylor. In this tree the information on those two families is incorrectly intertwined as well. If I make any corrections, I will reference and make every effort to properly source. Thank you, Linda LaMere *NEHGS, Register, Vol 165 July 2011 (part 1) & Oct 2011 (part 2).

the kids' bap. in Nottingham.......Spelled:Whelding/Whelden/Wheldon. Seriou
Spelled:Whelding/Whelden/Wheldon. Serious problem(confusion)exists with this family,as to ;Mother;Mothers;dates of births of children, and also ranking of those dates in family. The marriages of children are correct,as to husbands. It seems probable that children all born c:1600>1610 In Plymouth 1638 In Lynn & Malden,Mass. In Yarmouth,Barnstable,1639 Even his birth date not correct???

There is no indication that Margaret is the mother of any of Gabriel's children since Gabriel had a wife named Jane on 5 August 1637 in Nottingham and Margaret's name doesn't appear in any records until he's in Massachusetts.
We don't know where or when Jane and Gabriel got married and we don't know where or when Gabriel and Margaret got married.
For all the records found by Jan and Jean in Notthingham about Gabriel Wheldon, his wife Jane and her probable children, 2nd wife Margaret, his death and probate see these NEHGR articles --

There are MANY copiers who say Margaret died anywhere between 1638 and 1653. If she died in that range then she's not the Margaret listed in Gabriel's will who four of Gabriel's kids from his previous marriage took to court in 1655 . See (Word doc)at www.murrah.com/gen/jacobus.doc

See Gabriel's children's baptism records in Notthingham and deed record of Gabriel with his wife Jane in Nottingham in 1637 at NEHGR article at http://tinyurl.com/GabrielWheldon starting at p253 (or 14/145 if you're going by the .pdf numbers) . It's unlikely Gabriel was born around 1600 since his first son was baptized Feb 1611/12. The authors disagreed with some of the information added by the editors without consulting them and had a rebuttal at http://tinyurl.com/Jan-Whelden-corrections Vol. 164, October 2010, pages 295-296 (see the "Ralph" thing at the end of that).
If that's the same Margaret listed in Gabriel's will then she's the one who 2 of Gabriel's sons and 2 of his sons-in-law (married to living daughters) took to court in 1655. That Margaret didn't die before that date as seen in so many trees. The Indian connection in New England is discussed at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/20753501/mediax/04cf9f18-6788-426f-98a7-c4e3aa0a4c2d.
Some people find it hard to understand how, if Giles Hopkins of the Mayflower had married a woman who was the daughter or niece of the chief of a local Indian tribe, that Governor Bradford would have neglected to mention it in his journal.
If someone has records we would love to have them share with us.

( #3.) www.murrah.com/gen/jacobus.doc (Word doc) for Margaret (the second wife of Gabriel who appears not to be the mother of any of the kids). Remember, if Margaret died in 1651 (like almost every tree says she did), then she's NOT the widow Margaret mentioned in Gabriel's will who four of the kids from his previous marriage took to court in 1655.

Gabriel Wheldon/Whelden and his family
August 17, 2016
You will find similar comments as this on many of his line...BEWARE! So much info on this family is taken from unsourced information and family lore, which is unreliable at best. The New England Historic Genealogical Society has published several in depth research articles on Gabriel, his wives & children as well as on two of his daughters (Mary & Ruth) who both married men named Richard Taylor. Please do not alter, delete, or merge information on this line unless you use the NEHGS info. If you are not a member of NEHGS and would like more information, please contact me. I would be happy to work with others to "clean-up" this family's info. There is NO evidence that Gabriel's 2nd wife, Margaret, was a native American and they had no children together. In fact, beyond the fact that his wife's name was Margaret at the time he died is all we know of her at this point. All his children were born in England to wife, Jane. Thank you, Linda Myers LaMere

Summary and Links Explaining Fabricated Genealogy of Quadequina and Margaret
June 18, 2018
Please note the following link (and see also the following posted discussion): https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wampamag-1 for discussion of how the fake genealogical tie to Quadequina was invented and thoroughly debunked some 90 years ago. We've all been fooled by this fabricated genealogy, at one time or another, over the decades: Swimming Eel - Franklyn Ele-wa-tum BeArce, "From out of the Past, Who Our Forefathers Really Were: Our White and Indian Ancestors back to 1628, (Library of Congress Manuscript).
