Austin Samuel Bailey, 71, known to his friends as Sam, passed on to his reward on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1995, following a heroic battle with illness. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel.
Burial with full military honors will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery. Austin was born Nov. 22, 1924, at Au Sable Forks, N.Y., to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene R. Bailey. He gained his education in Au Sable Forks. He enlisted in the Navy on Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, 1941, and served with distinction until his honarable discharge in 1945. He met the love of his life, Cleo Wikoff, while they both served their country in naval intelligence, on Cape Cod, in Chatham, Mass.
They married on Sept. 21, 1946, and built their own home in North Jay, N.Y., facing Whiteface Mountain. He held the office of clerk for the town of Jay, N.Y., for two terms, and was an active member in the Masonic Temple. A lifelong New York Yankees fan, Austin was himself a terrific ballplayer, leading the Au Sable Forks Firemen to several winning seasons. Austin was co-owner of the Au Sable Forks dairy for seven years, until he sold his investment, and worked for many more years as a State Farm insurance representative, and later for security at the prison in Dannemore, N.Y.
In 1967 Austin moved to Idaho. In 1974 he began working for the Ada County marshal's office, then as jury commissioner, director of detention at the Juvenile Center, and finally for the trial court administrator of the 4th District judicial system. He retired in 1988. Austin fell in love with the western beauty of Idaho. For years he fished its many rivers and lakes.
A dedicated golfer, he twice scored a hole-in-one, on Sept. 14, 1986, and Aug. 9, 1993; two proud moments in an impressive life. Austin will be remembered by friends and family for his genuine warmth and peerless sense of humor. Few will ever recall him without a smile, of which he had the finest God ever bestowed.
One of his best friends noted, "No one has ever said an unkind word about Sam." Austin was preceded in death by his only siblings, Lucille and Helene, and his son, Gene. He is survived by his wife, Cleo, and their sons, Matthew and Judson, Judson's wife, Kelly, and his grandchildren, Brian, Tara, Robyn, Heidi, Cody and Heather; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Our loss is heaven's gain. Friends may visit today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel..
