Summary of Alfred Allen Hager (AAH) and Helen Hager (HH) pension records

1. 14 Apr 1884: AAH filed Declaration for Invalid Pension as a resident of Tug River, Martin Co., Ky. Says he lived in Boone County until May 1881 when he moved to Martin Co. His Post Office is Inez. Witnesses were J. P. Delong and William R. Kirk.
2. 22 May 1884: Original claim for invalid pension filed. Approved for typhoid fever resulting in partial paralysis of right side. AAH alleged that while in Co. G 8th West Va. Inf. Vols. and while in the line of his duty at Saint Albans about 1 Feb 1862 he was taken with typhoid fever, while on picket post and confined to bed two months, 15 days of that time he was speechless, that said fever settled in his right side causing partial paralysis, affecting right arm and leg, and impairing his breathing.
3. 9 Jan 1885: Adjutant General's Office of the War Department returned to the Commissioner of Pensions: Alfred A. Hagar, a Pvt. of Company G 8th Regiment W. Va. Inf. Volunteers, was enrolled on the 24th day of Oct, 1861, at Mud River for 3 years. He was discharged Feb'y 17, 1862 by Spec. Order No. 37, Hd. Qurs. Dept. of West Va., Feb'y 17, 1862 having been commissioned Adjutant in the Virginia Milita.
4. 1 Nov 1887: Application rejected on the ground of the claimants failure after a reasonable time and due notification to furnish the proof necessary to establish the case.
5. 7 Jul 1890: Filed declaration for invalid pension. A resident of the "Tug River", Martin Co. Ky. AAH states he was honorably discharged at Coals Mouth, Virginia on 17 Feb 1862, that he cannot earn a support by reason of disease of right side, right hip, and chest from result of typhoid fever and rheumatism in shoulders and arms. (Post Office: Calf Creek, Martin Co., Ky.)
6. 10 Jul 1890: Granted invalid pension for rheumatism. Post Office: Calf Creek, Martin, Ky. Witnesses: D. W. Ward and G. W. Jarrell of Inez. Notary Public: N. W. Crum.
7. 17 May 1893: Report from Doctor. Post Office is Calf Creek, Martin, Ky.
8. 2 Nov 1895: Affidavit signed by John B. C. Bias, age 55 years, a resident of Hewitt Creek in Logan Co. W. Va., says that he is acquainted with AAH and knows him to be the person of that name who served in the 8th. He says AAH was discharged by reason of promotion to Adjt. Genl. State Militia. The Notary wrote down an oral statement from Bias as, "I was on picket duty with him when he was taken so sick that he had to be relieved from duty and I went to see him when he was being treated by Dr. Lee of St. Albans, W.Va. Have seen him since the war and he limped on right leg and told me it was from the effects of his sickness at Coals Mouth."
9. 2 Nov 1895: An affidavit written by John B. C. Bias in his own hand, "I am well acquainted with Alfred A. Hagar. He was sick when discharged. So sick that he had to be relieved from duty. His discharge came while he was sick. He was discharged to organize the militia. He had typhoid fever and was very bad. That was the general talk in camp. I have heard him complain a great deal since his discharge of his back and side, also his hip joints and legs hurting him. This fever was on or about Feb. 15th 1862. I am satisfied the man deserves a pension. I am not interested in this claim no way."
10. 10 Sep 1896: Affidavit by Irving Nelson in Peck, Logan Co., W.Va., "Alfred A. Hager belonged to the same company I did at the time he contracted typhoid fever at or near St. Albans (now Coals Mouth W. Va.) He was on duty at that time and was taken with fever and was sent to the hospital. I saw him in the hospital. We were raised in the same neighborhood. He was stout and robust young man at time of his enlistment. While he was at the hospital he was appointed Adjutant General of the militia and did not return to our company any more as a member. I however saw him after he was appointed Adjutant General. I have known him since his discharge from the army. He has been lame since his discharge and has at every time we have met since the war complained of the effects to his hip and back as result of fever at St. Albans."
11. 24 Jan 1898: AAH answers questions from the Bureau of Pensions about family. (1) Wife's full name is Victoria Copley, deceased April 5th 1897. (2) They were married at Anthony Copley's by Harrison Marcum, July 11 1882. (3) Record of the marriage exists in the clerks office of Wayne County W. Va. (4) Previously married to Mahala Toney and divorced in 1876. (5) Living children and dates of birth are Anthony 21 Jun 1883, Charles W. 3 Apr 1885, Henry S. 9 Apr 1888, Ellen W. W. 5 Aug 1891. Signed A. A. Hagar.
12. 3 Jun 1899: Increase in pension rejected. Post Office: Calf Creek, Martin, Ky.
13. 9 Sep 1901: Applied for increase in pension. Post Office: Calf Creek, Martin Co.
14. 18 Nov 1901: Physician's Affidavit states AAH suffered from rheumatism, lumbago, disease of the chest, asthma, partial deafness in both ears, and defective eyesight. The rheumatism affected both shoulders and other muscles and joints.
15. 2 Apr 1902: AAH received increase of invalid pension. Post Office: Calf Creek, Martin Co, Ky. Declaration signed by P. P. Hinkle and J. J. Perry, both of Inez, as witnesses. Notary Public was W. R. McCoy.
16. 15 Aug 1903: Post Office Inez, applied for increase in pension, by reason of disability to earn a support by manual labor.
17. 6 Apr 1904: AAH received increase of invalid pension. Post Office: Inez, Martin Co., Ky. Certified to be reputable by J. C. Newberry.
18. 19 Feb 1907: Application for pension as a resident of Jennie, Wayne Co., W. Va. Claims he was born 24 Nov 1834 at Logan County, Va. Witnesses who signed: P. P. Hinkle and A. Copley, both residents of Inez. (I presume Anthony Copley?)
19. 5 Jul 1907: AAH, whose Post Office was in Jennie, Wayne Co., W.Va., swore before J. C. Newberry, a Notary Public in Martin Co., Ky. that he was enrolled as a Private on 24 Oct 1861 in Lt. Jos. S. Cassady's Co. G 8th Regt. Va. Vol. Inf. to serve for 3 years. Also that he was discharged from the Service of the United States 17 Feb 1862 at Wheeling, W.Va. by command of Brig. Gen. Rosecrans in Special Order No. 37 Article 6, and was then commissioned by the Gov. Adjutant on 2 May 1862 in the W. Va. Militia and served in that capacity until about 1865 when W.Va. military law was repealed and that he then did service under Lt. Col. Russell of the 4th W. Va. Inf.
20. 28 Aug 1907: Commissioner of Pensions asked the Adjutant General about AAH duty in W.Va. militia from 1862 to 1865 and about service under Lt. Col. Russell of the 4th W. Va. Inf. The AG returned notice of 8th Regt. Va. Inf. designation change to 8th Regt. Va. Mounted Inf. and finally to 7th Regt. W. Va. Cavalry. Also, that the name of AAH was not found on the rolls of the 4th W. Va. Inf. in which William H. H. Russell was a Lt. Col.
21. 3 Dec 1909: AAH swore before a Notary that he is 75 years old and that he was born Nov 24th 1834. "The date of his birth is in the old family Bible, which was copied from another Bible to the present one in the year 1850. At the time the old record was copied I could read and state the record is a true copy." Notary Public J. C. Newberry certified the date shown him in the Bible was Nov 24th 1834 but he could not give the year the Bible was made.
22. 31 May 1912: Reissue of pension at a rate of $21 a month. Post Office: Cassie, Wayne Co., W.Va. (very close to what is now Tripp, W. Va.)
23. 30 Jun 1915: Letter sent to the Postmaster of Cassie, W. Va., asking for the exact death of AAH.
24. 28 Jul 1915: Return from Postmaster at Cassie gives date of death as 9 Feb 1915. Postmaster was J. D. Copley (related to Anthony and Victoria?)
25. 28 Jul 1915: Pension dropped due to AAH death on 9 Feb 1915.
26. 21 Sep 1916: Nora Horman age 42 and Samuel Spaulding age 73, both residents of Cassie, W. Va. certify that AAH and HH lived together as husband and wife until the death of AAH. They knew this because they were close neighbors and visited quite often.
27. 22 Sep 1916: Sally Fluty, age 52, and Polly Crum, age 66, swear they were with Victoria Hager during her last sickness and "seen her body after life was extinct." They say she died 4 Oct 1897. Both had to make a mark. Witnesses were Sam Delong and Wilda Delong.
28. 30 Sep 1916: Harry Horn, age 43, and James Horn, age 40, both residents of Inez swear they were acquainted with AAH and knew him for 25 and 20 years, and visited him during his last sickness and was at his residence when he died and assisted in preparing his body for burial and that he died 9 Feb 1915.
29. 7 Oct 1916: Boone County Clerk certifies a copy of the divorce order for Mahala Hager and AAH dated 21 Apr 1877.
30. 12 Oct 1916: David V. Delong, age 67 a resident of Inez, says he was well acquainted with George Delong and visited him during his last sickness and was at his residence when he died and assisted in preparing his body for burial and that he died 2 Feb 1891. He says George was his brother and for all these reasons he is sure of the date of death.
31. 12 Oct 1916: John P. Delong, age 73, a resident of Inez, repeats the previous.
32. 10 Oct 1916: Clerk of the County Court of Martin County certifies that on 17 Jun 1901 the rites of matrimony were legally solemnized between AAH and Helen Delong at Inez Ky. in the presence of Polley Crum and Tella Fields. Signed by J. R. Fairchild, Meth. Bapt. Church.
33. 22 Jan 1917: Samuel Spaulding, age 73, and Milly Hinkle, age 74, swear they had known AAH for 53 years and knew from personal knowledge that he had been married only two times previously to his marriage to the claimant.
34. 22 Jan 1917: HH swears to Notary that she did not make application for pension as the widow of George Delong for the reason that he was not a soldier. Said George was born in 1853.
35. 29 Jan 1917: D. V. Delong and John P. Delong, residents of Inez, appear before notary to swear they are acquainted with HH and have known her for 36 years and know from personal knowledge that she had only been married once prior to her marriage to AAH.
36. 20 Feb 1917: Approvals for pension signed with the following notes: death of claimant's former husband 2 Feb 1891, death of soldier's former wife 4 Oct 1897, divorce of soldier from former wife 21 Apr 1877, claimant marriage to soldier 17 Jun 1901.
37. 20 Feb 1917: HH granted widow pension.
38. 26 Aug 1930: Attorney in Ashland writes the Pension Office on behalf of HH requesting increase in pension for turning 70. "She is so afflicted that she needs the care and attention of another person all the time." He then asks if there is any law allowing to make application for nursing.
39. 4 Apr 1931: HH requests an adjustment to pension for her turning 70 on 1 Mar 1931. Address is Rt 1, Box 15, Catlettsburg, Boyd, Ky.
40. 15 Jun 1931: Pension Commissioner asks for evidence of age and advises HH that in her original application filed 12 Oct 1916 she gave her age as 50, which would have been 1862 for year of birth.
41. 6 Oct 1931: HH says it was a mistake in her original application that gave the date of her birth as 1 Mar 1862 and the correct date is 1 Mar 1861. She says she can't prove date of birth because of destruction of records. She had seen a record of the birth in the family Bible before it was misplaced or destroyed. She was born near Dunganan, Scott County, Virginia and that she lived near this place from the date of her birth in 1861 up until about that latter part of the year 1879, at which time she came to near Davella, Martin County, Ky. Her father G. W. Stallard and her mother, A. E. Stallard, are both dead and that her sisters, Ellen Stallard Ramey and Louisa Stallard Phipps, are both dead and that her brother, S. R. Stallard, lives near Palo Verde, California, and her brother, James A. Stallard, lives near Coburn, Virginia, and that these are the only two brothers that she has now living.
42. 8 Oct 1931: S. R. Stallard writes from Ripley, CA that HH of Cassie, W.Va. was born 1 Mar 1861 and it is recorded in the family Bible (he doesn't say it was misplaced or destroyed).
43. 9 Oct 1931: James Stallard of Coburn, Wise Co., Virginia states in affidavit that HH was born 1 Mar 1861 and that he saw the record in the family Bible which is now misplaced or destroyed.
44. 9 Nov 1931: Census Bureau responds to inquiry from Directory of Pensions and says her age was given as 11 on the Census of 1870. They gave no answer to the inquiry about her stated age on 1880 census in Martin Co. Ky.
45. 18 Nov 1931: Pension increase for age 70 approved based on Census records.
46. 20 Nov 1933: Lawrence Delong writes to Commissioner of Pensions asking for forms to enable him to collect the money due HH. Then he tells them she died 14 Nov 1933. The return address is Cassie W.Va. and written on the stationary of "H. D. Horn, Sheriff of Martin County, Inez, Kentucky" which is crossed out.

Cemetery is very overgrown, on top of a railway tunnel, and difficult to locate. Special thanks to Curtis Hager of Branchland, WV, for his accurate recollection of how to locate this site. Without him, we would have never found it!
