Initially published in 1889, An American Vendetta represented one of the earliest journalistic accounts of the now famous Hatfield and McCoy Feud. During that time period, many across the country first came to hear of the story through the pages of this book. Besides telling the complex and bloody story of the feud often in blunt and the harshest of terms this volume, penned by New York World reporter, Theron C. Crawford, presents the only known interview with feudist Anderson Devil Anse Hatfield conducted in Hatfield s home in Logan County, West Virginia. In his book, Land of the Guyandote, Mountain State historian Robert Y. Spence explained that in October 1888, Crawford traveled to southern West Virginia, and was escorted to Logan County by John B. Floyd, a state senator and friend of the Hatfields. The two men actually stayed over at the home of Devil Anse, as the interview process continued into the night. Understandably, critics have noted that Crawford, for some unknown reason, comes off with a derogatory tone about the territory a barbarous, uncivilized, and wholly savage region and also about the Hatfield clan. Yet, Dr. Coleman C. Hatfield, grandson of Cap Hatfield, wrote in his book, The Tale of the Devil: The Biography of Devil Anse Hatfield: Crawford s account of the feud is of interest for perhaps two important reasons: this was the first extensive work depicting the troubles between the families, other than occasional articles that appeared in The Louisville Courier-Journal and other area newspapers; secondly, the fact that Crawford worked in New York City, the information capital of the nation, meant it would receive more attention than other accounts. Dr. Hatfield also felt that because Crawford's work was illustrated (by a penman named Graves,) it helped set the stereotypical image of the mountaineer in popular imagination. At the time of Crawford s writings, the family conflict was at its greatest intensity. The brutal massacre at Randall McCoy s cabin by the Hatfields, which resulted in the death of two of his children, Alifair and Calvin, had taken place just months earlier, on New Year s Day, 1888. One week later, Jim Vance was killed by Hatfield archenemy, Bad Frank Phillips. It was in the shadow of this bloody backdrop that Devil Anse, during his interview with Crawford, stressed that he wanted peace with the McCoys but had no intention of disarming or surrendering to law officers or bounty hunters. Peace, it turns out, was still a few years off. After many decades, American Vendetta, a Hatfield and McCoy Feud classic, is available again. T.C. Covington, and originally appeared on his own website of biographical sketches of persons involved in the lamp industry. Following his passing in February 2017, and with kind permission of his family, Ed's words have been preserved here in the hope of maintaining access to his writings for the benefit of subsequent generations. T.C. Crawford in 1872 Biography A brief write-up of a man called Theron Clark Crawford (1849 - 1925) is considered here, not because he was an inventor, but rather because he was an entrepreneur who helped to finance work that resulted in the manufacture of the Crawford-Voelker lamp. This lamp was made in England for a few years at the beginning of the twentieth century. The lamp had a filament of titanium carbide and is pictured below. A Crawford-Voelker Titaniam Carbide Lamp, No. 778 in the Collection of William J. Hammer, Housed at The Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A. Theron Crawford had a colorful career. At one time he spent 15 years at the nation's capitol as a political journalist. He ventured into mining in California, investigated reports of rich unexploited gold fields in Spain and even financed Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show when it played in England. Crawford was the author of several books. As a newspaper correspondent he worked for Joseph Pulitzer. Although the story behind a relationship with Ludwig Karl Böhm, the glass blower who worked for Thomas Alva Edison, is not known, they share inventorship of U.S. patent No. 516,079, which was issued on 6 March 1894. This collaborative effort apparently occurred before Crawford became associated with William Lawrence Voelker. Some personal characteristics of Crawford can be gleaned from the autobiography that was written by his daughter, Inez Grace Crawford Lovat Fraser (1889 - 1977). Inez referred to her father as "Papa" in her writing. Some of what she had to say follows: "Papa was handsome and jovial with a gorgeous sense of fun and an outrageous fantasy. He had immense and completely extrovert charm, loved all people and was always sure that everyone he knew was good, loyal and trustworthy. So he trusted them, successfully on the whole, but sometimes with dire results....Papa was always sure that he was about to make a fortune and frequently did....The fact of the matter was that Papa was a born gambler and, though a shrewd business man, the lure of an attractive but perilous gamble was something he found hard to resist. And, like all gamblers, he had his ups and downs." The time frame of collaboration between Crawford and William Lawrence Voelker can be estimated by examining the application dates on the patents that are listed in the Voelker write-up. This is determined to be about 1897 to 1900. Although Crawford was born in the United States he lived for different periods of time in European countires. For much of his life he was know simply by that name. Fraser's father (also Claud) was a prominent solicitor. The young Fraser and his younger brother Alan were educated at Charterhouse School in Surrey. In 1907 he began his studies to enter his father's law firm, but was always more interested in becoming an artist. In 1911 with his father's blessing he left the family firm and began to pursue a career in art. After a brief period under the tutelage of Walter Sickert in 1912 he executed illustrations for Haldane Macfall's essay on art and aesthetics entitled The Splendid Wayfaring. In 1913, along with Holbrook Jackson and the poet Ralph Hodgson Lovat Fraser established a small publishing firm called The Sign of the Flying Fame to produce decorative poetry broadsides and chapbooks. Although printed in limited editions and often hand-coloured, they were affordably priced and were intended to make poetry more accessible to the general public. In the autumn of 1914, Fraser enlisted with the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps and was quickly commissioned to the 14th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He went on to produce sketches as a record of the trenches and battlefields of Flanders. He was one of few British officers to survive the Battle of Loos in 1915. In December of that year his battalion withstood a German gas attack but in the confusion of the event, he neglected to put on his gas mask and suffered injuries to his lungs. He was promoted to captain in early 1916, but by late February he was invalided home, suffering from the effects of gas and from shellshock after a battle at the Ypres Salient. He served as a clerk in the War Office on visual propaganda from October 1916 through to late April 1917 and then at the Army Record Office at Hounslow until his discharge in March 1919. In August 1916, he had met the American-born actress Grace Inez Crawford in the dressing room of a theatre. They were married in February 1917 and had a daughter, Helen. His wife's interests contributed to his increased activity in theatre and costume design. After the war, Fraser made designs for the Harold Munro's Poetry Bookshop and for the Curwen Press. He also executed private commissions for bookplates, stationery and greeting cards. He produced the designs for a very successful revival of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. During this period Grace and Lovat Fraser became friendly with Paul Nash (artist). They were introduced by Nash and his wife to Dymchurch in Kent and the two families holidayed together. Lovat was taken ill, while the family were vacationing there and died on June 18 after a sudden illness related to the injuries he had sustained from the gassing from which he had never properly recovered. A memorial exhibition of his work was held in December 1921 at the Leicester Galleries in London.
