• May D. Funcheon
Long Active In Legion Auxiliary Affairs, Dead At 78
Mrs. May Davenport Funcheon died Saturday morning (June 13,1964) at about 4:00 o'clock. Cause of death was listed by Deputy Potter County Coroner John Dec, who investigated, as self-inflicted asphyxiation by drowning. He added she had been despondent, and in ill health for five years.
Ricky Lindhome, 12, and his friend, Tom Calkins, discovered the body at 7:15 a.m. in the flood control channel of the Allegheny River, 20 feet downstream from the footbridge to Mitchell Park. They ran to the home of the Rev. Kenneth Lewis on Park Ave., who notified authorities.
An autopsy, performed Sunday by Dr. Herman Mosch, coroner, confirmed Mr. Dec's conclusion of death by drowning.
A note, in which she disposed of her property, was found on the kitchen table of the Funcheon home on Ross Street, along with her wrist watch.
Mrs. Funcheon was 78 years old. She was born Aug. 31, 1885, in Coudersport, the daughter Fred and Henrietta Horton Davenport. She was a member of Park Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her husband, William, died in 1960.
Survivors are cousins, Mrs. Helmer Young, Austin; Donald Williams, Austin RD; Mrs. Margaret Bliss, Rixford; and Leon Tornstrom, Jamestown, also a nephew, L.H. Chase, Miami.
