U.S. Air Force 1st Lieutenant George H. Burt (Retired), 85, of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, passed away on Thursday, August 05, 2010 in the Masonic Health Care Center.
Born in Ellwood City, he was the son of the late Israel R. and Charlotte E. (Happle) Burt.
George was a 1951 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.
During World War II, he served with the 97th Bomb Group in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for twelve years.
Prior to retiring in 1986, George was employed as a Sales Manager and Vice President of Sales by the former Corry Jamestown Corporation in Corry. Previously, he was employed as a Sales Representative by the former General Fireproofing in Youngstown, Ohio.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Port Kennedy where he served as Elder, Past President of the Trustees, and taught Sunday School.
George was a sixty year member and Past Master of Ellwood Lodge No. 599, Free & Accepted Masons in Ellwood City. He was also a member of the New Castle Consistory, Scottish Rite, Valley of Philadelphia, Zembo Temple in Harrisburg, a former member of Zem Zem Temple, and a member and Past President of Montgomery County Shrine Club.
Also, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8087 in Eustis, Florida and the American Legion Florida State Post 0400, the Gideons International, the Rotary International, and the High Twelve
George was a Boy Scout Leader and a Neighborhood Commissioner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Emma Jean Cartwright Burt, who died in August 2009; his daughter: Janice Harbison; his son: Douglas G. Burt; and, his brother: A. Martin Burt.
George is survived by his son: David C. Burt of Philadelphia; his three grandchildren; his two great-grandchildren; his daughter-in-law: Karen A. D. Burt of Southampton; and, his son-in-law: William E. Harbison of Jeffersonville.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 in the John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown at 10:30 AM. Friends may call at the chapel from 09:30 AM until the time of the service.
Interment will take place in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
